MAYOR’S REPORT
APRIL 2007
March 10th our new baseball facility opened. It is a very good
facility for our Village and school. We need to recognize all the
hard work that went into getting this project completed. To start
with, Bobbi Shearer went to the legislature to start the funding in our
2002 legislature. Representatives Dub Williams and Dan Foley, and
Senator Rod Adair worked very hard to secure funds for this. We
also got an additional $50,000 this year to do more work that remains
unfinished due to funds. The school executives and Capitan
Village executives had a lot of work to do to get this done.
Volunteers like George Schultz of Alpine Concrete and James Fields of
Hamilton Construction were lead volunteers who donated much time and
material to see this project through. We started off with a
double header with Eunice, who was last year’s state runner ups in
their division. It wound up in a split – one game each. The
girls softball also scrimmaged with Ruidoso. I’m looking forward
to seeing much more action including little league in the future.
We had a very successful trip to the Roswell meeting with SERPO and the
NM Dept of Transportation (DOT) road enhancement allocation
meeting. Our presentation on Alternative Trails was picked
first out of seven projects in the Southeastern DOT District. We
will get funded in 2008 to do 2 miles of Highway 48 and 2 miles on
Highway 380 leading to school and downtown. These will be used
for walking, biking, equestrians, and slow moving vehicles. We
owe our No. 1 rating to some hardworking volunteers. Michele
Caskey and Clark Taylor gave a very strong power point presentation,
which I believe secured us our No. 1 position. Trustee Jim Davis
worked very hard on this project also.
At the Town Hall meeting on the Equestrian Center, the vote was
overwhelmingly in favor of supporting the study on Lincoln County’s
effort to see if this is a viable project when it gets funded. We
also want to make a statement that we want this to be located in
Capitan.
The Smokey Bear playground project at Smokey Bear Historical Park is
being delayed to Sept. 27th and 29th. We are at about $20,000 of
the $35,000 needed. Any suggestions of how to get the remaining
$15,000 will be appreciated. We will also need volunteers to help
that can do wood work and construction abilities during these
days. We also are in the preliminary planning stage for a skate
board park. So you see, we have many worthwhile projects in
progress at this time.
There is an E-recycle waste day planned for April 14th which is any
electrical product which needs to be trashed. We also have 6 roll
off containers scheduled for May 19th, which will be accepting anything
but household trash.
