MAYOR’S REPORT
August 2007
If you attended the Fourth of July celebration and parade, you know it
was the best and biggest ever. We congratulate the Capitan
Chamber of Commerce for all their hard work to put on such a successful
event. There were over 114 entrants and it took about one hour to
complete. The fire works display and rodeo events were well
attended also. The Smokey Bear Fun Run had the most runners it
has ever had; 93 contestants in all. There were 23 communities
from three states that were represented. Race director, George
Tippin, did an excellent job again this year.
Trustee Davis and I attended an area transportation meeting on July
19th. The purpose was to formulate a plan for inter-connective
transportation for the cities of Lincoln County with connection to
Roswell and Alamogordo. There will be a village hall meeting to
access the needs for services.
The COOP paving project on Aspen, Cedar, Carole, and parts of Main was
completed last week. Ruidoso Paving did an excellent job in 2 ½
days, which was as fast as the lay down machine could handle the
asphalt. The next street project will be finishing Skyview and
Main.
The price for trash pickup is going up again by $.60¢ per
customer. This is due to the raise by Lincoln County Solid Waste.
The joint auction for the benefit of the Capitan Public Library and the
Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association’s playground project will be held
August 18th at 11:00 AM. The proceeds will be split between the
Library and the Smokey Bear’s Hometown Assn.
If you want to participate in the Village wide yard sale September 8th,
you can register at the Capitan Chamber of Commerce or the Capitan
Public Library. A $5.00 registration fee will be charged to pay
for the advertising and location maps.
Ellen and I attended the Stand-up Presentation at Spencer Theater for
the benefit of the H.E.A.L. Association. I haven’t heard the
results of donations received, but it was a very good presentation
utilizing local artists. This organization is a very worthy cause
as it manages the domestic abuse shelter in Ruidoso Downs, which takes
in county abuse cases for Lincoln County. We have the dubious
distinction of being the number one county in New Mexico when it comes
to domestic abuse. So support it any way you can.
We owe the boys at Camp Sierra Blanca our appreciation for a job well
done during our flood last week. They worked filling and placing
sand bags. As always, they did an excellent job according to
Police Chief Spear.
