MAYOR’S REPORT
NOVEMBER 2006

November 4th the Lincoln County Solid Waste will be sponsoring a free day to get rid of computers and electronic components.  We will either have a container or truck at our waste facility on Tiger Drive during the week of Oct. 30th through Nov. 3rd.  Please contact Village Hall at 354-2247 to arrange for the drop off of any items.

We still have approximately $2500 to go in order to match the Hubbard Foundation Grant for the playground equipment.  The planning company was here and is formulating a plan to build the equipment with volunteer help.

On October 19th, we had an informational meeting with Mary Ann Burr of S.E.R.P.O., a division of Southeastern New Mexico Economic Development District.  We were given information as to what grants are available to develop alternative transportation trails, restore historic buildings, and many other programs that are available.  The one that struck us the most was alternative transportation which would include bike riding, jogging, equestrian, and carts.  We would like to develop these on Highway 48 and 380 to drain the subdivisions and encourage children to ride their bikes, walk, and jog to and from school, which is going to be the most promoted alternative in the near future.  Also there is a possibility for some of our historical buildings.

We are hoping to get final approval for the new well site from B.L.M.  As soon as this happens, we have the approbation to drill the new well which will put us out of any danger if either of the other wells were to fail.

Our loop line is in the engineering stage and should be developed soon.  This puts us out of any danger should the line under Magodo Creek break again.  We will be able to by-pass the break and still keep our city water system in operation.

If you haven’t seen the Capitan High School football team, you are missing seeing some well executed football.  Although there are a couple of players leading state in statistics, they couldn’t be there without the executions from line and defense.  They are very well coached and evidently a well schooled ball team or they couldn’t execute the way they do.  They have a tough road to state.  There are at least 3 other undefeated teams to go through to win state.  They have a “bye” this week, but will be back in action week after next.  We wish them the best and hope they can go all the way!  I have every confidence they can!

We have another police officer on board, Steven Dobbs, who comes to Capitan from another Lincoln County Village.  Steven is well qualified and has many impressive credentials.  WELCOME STEVEN!

The Capitan area community invites everyone to an old fashion Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Thursday, November 23rd from 12:00 PM until 3:30 PM at the Capitan School Cafeteria.  Arrangements will be made for delivery of food or transportation for shut-ins.  Donations of any kind as well as volunteers are gladly accepted.  Sign up sheets are located at the Capitan Public Library and the Capitan Village Hall.  Please call 354-1033 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM for more information.

Despite the negative publicity we are receiving, we have very many good and positive things happening in the Village of Capitan.
