RESOLUTION 2005-35
DESIGNATION OF VILLAGE OF CAPITAN AS COORDINATING AGENCY FOR
SPONSORING AND HOSTING THE ANNUAL
SMOKEY BEAR DAYS CELEBRATION

WHEREAS, Smokey Bear is recognized as the symbol of wildiand fire prevention
throughout the nation and the world and Capitan is the recognized official home and resting place of the original rescued black bear known as Smokey Bear; and

WHEREAS, the Capitan community recognizes the importance of Smokey Bear in communicating the wildland fire prevention message, locally, in New Mexico, and throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Capitan community has successfully sponsored annual events and activities celebrating Smokey Bear and the wildland fire prevention message in the past; and

WHEREAS, the Village of Capitan, in association with allied county, state and Federal government agencies, community service organizations, and private business supports the concept of cooperative promotion of fire prevention and the Smokey Bear program and are desirous of continuing an annual community celebration for such; and

WHEREAS, the hosting and presentation of community-wide events celebrating Smokey Bear and promoting wildland fire prevention require coordination and organization to ensure public safety and ensure effective community-wide involvement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE OF CAPITAN that:
1. The Village of Capitan shall serve as the coordinating agency for hosting and presenting the annual, Smokey Bear Days celebration; and
2. The Village of Capitan shall solicit input and cooperation from allied local, state and Federal government agencies, community service organizations, private business, and individuals interested in supporting or contributing to the event; and
3. The Village of Capitan shall designate a suitable event coordinator, selected from the community, who will be responsible for planning and organizing the event, directing event staff, and coordinating the efforts of all involved organizations and individuals supporting the event.

PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED by the Governing Body of the Village of Capitan, Lincoln County, New Mexico this 11th day of October, 2005
