Audible Indication of Mail Arrival It is possible to set up Netscape to give an audible signal in addition to the visual flag on your mail room icon. You can go to the EDIT menu and choose PREFERENCES and then click on the MAIL & GROUPS tab. In the window that opens you will see a box you must check beside the legend ENABLE SOUND ALERT WHEN NEW MAIL ARRIVES. This is but half of the battle (as I only recently discovered). Close out PREFERENCES. Click the START button on your Task Bar and choose SETTINGS from the popup menu. Select CONTROL PANEL from the menu and in the control panel window, double click on the SOUNDS icon. You now have access to the assignment of sounds to all of your system functions. Scroll down to the section for WINDOWS (probably the first one) then scroll further until you find the sound assignment for the event called NEW MAIL NOTIFICATION. Highlight it with one left click of your mouse. Below the main (events) window is a smaller window for the sound you want to use. Most of the Windows sounds are in the WINDOWS\MEDIA folder. But sounds in any other folder may be selected (see note below "Finding Wav Files" to locate other sounds). If you click on the little dot to the right of the box for entry of the name of the sound you will be shown the list of sounds in your system sound folder (media on my system). You can highlight one and test it with the button on the right side. Or you can click on the browse button which will let you go to any of the folders that contain sound files so you can choose one from there. You can test it as described in the preceding paragraph. Once you have selected the sound you want, click on the APPLY button at the bottom then the OK button to exit. I use the attached wav file that reminds me of the fluttering wings of an arrriving carrier pigeon But then I always did have an active imagination. Just copy the wav to a folder (Windows\Media is suggested) and go thru the selection procedure outlined above. If you have a problem email or ICQ me and I'll try to help you. Enjoy. Wes Finding Wav Files: You can locate all sound files on your system with the FIND function. Click on the START button on the task bar and select FIND and FILES & FOLDERS. In the popup window type in *.wav where it asks for the name. The asterisk is a wildcard and means to locate ALL wave files. Be sure the LOOK IN window is pointing to the C: drive and a check is there for it to look in subfolders too. When you find folders with sound files you will want to jot down the path to them to be used later when yuo browse.
