(I)Subject: Agustus T. WHEELER Date: Tue, 15 Apr 97 19:17:53 PDT From: Peggy M Wheeler mwheeler@telis.org Thru: WHEELER family discussion listI'm new to lists and seeking information without much to offer. I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Augustus "Gus" T. WHEELER and his ancestors.
Gus was enumerated in the Napa, CA, 1860 Census as age 28 and place of birth of Indiana. This would make his birth year about 1832. He came to CA with a wagon train believed to have originated in western IA in 1854. He married en route to Martha Jane ANDERSON (b. 1836, d. 1873), daughter of Serine or Serena (Tormod Madland) and Jacob Anderson (Slogvig). The Anderson family (part of the Norwegian "Sloopers") had moved in 1848 from Fox River, Illinois, to Grove Township, Pottawattamie County in western Iowa. Gus and Martha's marriage was recorded Dec. 13, 1857 at Napa, California. The Andersons and Wheelers first settled in Napa County where my grandfather, Andrew Jackson, was born 22 Sep 1858. Gus and Martha later settled at Jackson, Amador County, CA, where they had two more children before Gus was killed in a "mining or lumbering accident" in or near Jackson. (No death or burial records for Gus can be found, but current best guess of death year is about 1866.) Martha then married Chester HILLIARD, a grape grower, and had two sons by him. Leaving my young grandfather behind in California, Martha returned to Iowa in 1872 where she died a few months later.
Our family knows nothing more about Gus or his heritage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, a Keith Wheeler, Mad River, CA - mwheeler@telis.org
