First From: Steve SMITH
Subject: Sarah VANBEBBER & Joshua WHEELER

Dear Steve,

How exciting - you live right there and I'm hopeful you may have info for us. I'm Suzie Wheeler Storr, sister to Bill and answering most of his genealogy posts since he's just taken a very time consuming job.

The info I'm sending is from a book "The Descendants of Joshua Wheeler and Sarah VanBebber" by Marshall R. Wheeler, 1313 Ardenwood Road, Austin, Texas 78722-1105.

You should know right up front that our ggrandfather (James Stonewall Wheeler- JS) lived with Sarah and Joshua for 7 years while his father was in California. (a combination of avoiding the Civil War where his Illinois neighbors were fighting his Kentucky brothers and the gold rush) JS knew that Sarah Adams was married to William Wheeler (we have a wedding record of Sally Adams and William Wheeler) and had 7 children in Kentucky before leaving for Illinois in 1830. It was the wettest spring in memory and William got pneumonia and died by his wagon. He was buried where the Wabash River meets the Ohio River, but a marked grave was never found. Before the wagon train settled in Illinois, Sarah was married to Joshua Wheeler - perhaps by a circuit rider, there's no record that we've found.

Two of Sarah's children married Owens girls who were daughters of James G. Owens and Hannah VanBebber.

James VanBebber, Sr m. Hannah Hoover of Claiborne Co, TN

Robert VanBebber in Greene Co, IL by 1837
James Van Bebber in Greene Co, IL
     Sarah Van Bebber
Hannah Van Bebber m. James G. Owens
Martha Emily Owens b TN 16 Dec 1829 m James
Richard Wheeler 24 Feb 1848 Macoupin Co, IL
                Mary Jane Wheeler 1851-
                John Marshall Wheeler 1852-1931
                Martha A. "Mattie" Wheeler 1859-1937
                James Stonewall Wheeler 1862-1946
                Elizabeth Maude Wheeler 1870-1904
Isaac Asbury Owens m Elizabeth Steely
Mary Elizabeth Owens b TN 12 May 1834 m Joshua
Wheeler 23 Aug 1857 DeWitt Co, IL

This is as much as I can get from Marshall's book on the VanBebbers. I figure that my gggrandmother was Hannah VanBebber but I know absolutely that another gggrandmother was Sarah Adams Wheeler. JS had several stories that fit with the Adams name in addition to rather conclusive evidence of his name. My first question to the family was why was a baby born in Illinois in 1862 named Stonewall? Sarah Adams step-father was George Jackson, the great uncle of Stonewall.

We have no idea who Joshua Wheeler was but assume he was some sort of cousin since he and William were on the same wagon train. I'll send you by snail mail some written info on the stories of JS. I would love to know if there was a Sarah VanBebber but this looks like a big puzzle for that time frame.

I hope I haven't rambled too much, but I would love to know more about the Van Bebbers.
