My name (birthname) was James Robert WHEELER Jr. I was born in St. Louis Mo. on March 8, 1955. My father's name was of course James R. WHEELER. He was born in Tell City Indiana, I believe, in 1928. He had 11 brothers and sisters, a brother named William, one named Homer Lee, and sister names Priscilla are the only sibling names I have. I think his father's name may also have been Home Lee. My uncle, Homer Lee, was a POW in the Korean War for approximately 33 months, returned to the states to Indiana and from what I understand had a tough time of it and I think I recall him as being deceased. My parents divorced when I was about six months old and I only saw my father one time that I can remember. He was killed in a farming accident in 1968 in the Little Rock Arkansas area. At the time his wife's name was Betty. Think I may have some half brothers or sisters out there somewhere. I spent 20 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1995 in the Sacramento Ca. area. I changed my name in 1975 to Larsen, taking my step fathers name. He was killed in 1973 and we had talked of the name change before he died.

I don't know a whole lot about my family history on the Wheeler side as the only and last contact I had with any of them, William in Tell City and Priscilla in Malibu (?) in 1988 or 89 or thereabouts. I was wondering if in your travels through the names and internet you might have some information as to where I might start to trace back in my family roots.

Thank you in advance for your time, even if you just take the time to read this and nothing more. I would understand. Jim Larsen

  Thru: "WHEELER family discussion list"

I'm new to lists and seeking information without much to offer. I am searching for information on my great grandfather, Augustus "Gus" T. WHEELER and his ancestors.

Gus was enumerated in the Napa, CA, 1860 Census as age 28 and place of birth of Indiana. This would make his birth year about 1832. He came to CA with a wagon train believed to have originated in western IA in 1854. He married en route to Martha Jane ANDERSON (b. 1836, d. 1873), daughter of Serine or Serena (Tormod Madland) and Jacob Anderson (Slogvig). The Anderson family (part of the Norwegian "Sloopers") had moved in 1848 from Fox River, Illinois, to Grove Township, Pottawattamie County in western Iowa. Gus and Martha's marriage was recorded Dec. 13, 1857 at Napa, California. The Andersons and Wheelers first settled in Napa County where my grandfather, Andrew Jackson, was born 22 Sep 1858. Gus and Martha later settled at Jackson, Amador County, CA, where they had two more children before Gus was killed in a "mining or lumbering accident" in or near Jackson. (No death or burial records for Gus can be found, but current best guess of death year is about 1866.) Martha then married Chester HILLIARD, a grape grower, and had two sons by him. Leaving my young grandfather behind in California, Martha returned to Iowa in 1872 where she died a few months later.

Our family knows nothing more about Gus or his heritage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Keith Wheeler, Mad River, CA mwheeler@telis.org

Comments: I am looking for the parents of Jacob WHEELER. He was born in 1815 in KY or IN. He married Helen Cook. They have several children. In the 1860 Census he was living in Bates Co. MO. He died in 1863, is buried in Clay Co, IN. I believe he had a sister, Susan Wheeler Drake, as she lived next door in several census records.

I think his father was Thomas who married Francis Thompson in 1824. They both brought children into the marriage. The father of Thomas was Benjamin of the Rev. War from Maryland b 1758 and d 1848. He is buried in Clay Co, IN also. I am working on DAR membership so must prove all of my "I Thinks"! If you have any info, please contact me. Sincerely, Sandy, Crawfordsville, IN
