(XX)Subject: Major John WHEELER Resent-Date: Wed, 6 May 1998 13:06:38 -0700 (PDT) Resent-From: WHEELER-L@rootsweb.com From: Diane Hicks dhicks@worldnet.att.net

My lineage traces back to Major John WHEELER, b. 8 Sep 1797 in KY? d. 14 Sep 1876 in KY m. date unkn to Elizabeth Jett, b. 1797 in VA d. 17 Nov 1863 in KY Their child: Mary Jane WHEELER, b. 28 Sep 1822 in VA d. 7 Mar 1904 in Butler, Pendleton Co., KY

Can anyone expand upon the parents, marriage date & place, etc?

According to my sources (listed below), Major John WHEELER was b. 8 Sep 1797 and d. 14 Sep 1876 in Pendleton Co., KY, and was the son of Drummond WHEELER, Jr. and an unknown mother. Drummond Jr., b. 4 Apr 1762, d. 9 Apr 1834 in Pendleton Co., KY, was the son of Drummond WHEELER Sr. and Jane WESLEY. Drummond Sr. (abt. 1726-1804) was the son of Richard WHEELER (2 Jan 1697/98-bef 26 Mar 1751), who was the son of William WHEELER (abt. 1658- ).

I don't know the date of his marriage to Elizabeth JETT, but he subsequently married, 18 Jun 1864, Minerva RICE, and later (but bef. 26 Sep 1872) Mary CARNES. I suspect all of his children were by his first wife, Elizabeth, but I don't know that for sure. The children I know of are: 1) Henry P., b.18 Feb 1829, d. 1865; 2) Thomas J., b. abt. 1836; 3) Jasper, b. 17 May 1838; 4) Richard M., d. 1866; 5) R.M.J. (perhaps the Richard M. already named?); 6) Mary Jane; 7) Martha; 8) Elizabeth; 9) Nimrod.

My interest in this family is because on 3 May 1872, John WHEELER of Pendleton Co., KY and his wife Mary WHEELER sold land in Story Co., Iowa, which is where some of my known WHEELER ancestors settled, to Mary Jane YELTON of Pendleton Co. (probably his daughter, Mary Jane). On 26 Sep 1872, the Story County District Court awarded John WHEELER of Pendleton Co., KY title to another parcel of land in Story Co., IA which had been involved in a dispute between John WHEELER vs. Margaret WHEELER and Olly WHEELER, Robert WHEELER, and Elizabeth WHEELER, widow and minor heirs of Henry P. WHEELER (son of Major John). Henry P. WHEELER had apparently assigned his Original Certificate of Entry over to his father in 1857, but Margaret wasn't about to give up her portion or that of her children when Henry died!

I am descended from Benjamin WHEELER, b. 1758 Baltimore Co., MD, d. 1848 Clay Co., IN. His daughter Hannah WHEELER was born in Bullitt Co.(Jefferson Co. at the time), KY, and married Absalom Briley in 1822 in Crawford Co., IN. By 1852 Hannah, a widow now, and her children were in Boone Co. and shortly after that in Story Co., IA. Her brother John WHEELER was also there. Hannah and several of her children are buried in the Ontario Cemetery in Story Co. I don't know of the connection, if any, between my Wheeler ancestors and Major John WHEELER of Pendleton Co., KY, but the tie to Story Co., IA interests me.

I have further information on Major John WHEELER's siblings, and also on his children if you are interested. My information comes from the following sources:

1. Doyle Fenn, FOOTPRINTS WEST - DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD MASTERS FROM NEW JERSEY.........WILLIAM WHEELER FROM MARYLAND: A FAMILY HISTORY..... (Bountiful, Utah: Family History Publishers, 1990) pp. 359, 360.

2. U.S. Census, 1830 population schedule, Pendleton County, Kentucky.

3. Story County Deeds, Clerk of District Court, Story County, Iowa: Book T:
389-99, 421-23, FHL microfilm #1404597, item 4.

Hope this helps! Diane

Comments: Very nice site. Interesting to read. I am researching the John WHEELER Line in Ky. The John I am looking for was born in Maryland. According to the 1850 Census of Gallatin. Co. Ky., he was 52 years old. He married Mary Ann (Polly) BRISBY in Switzerland Co., Indiana in 1822 and lived in Gallatin Co. after that. Oldham Co. Ky., was formed in part from Gallatin County in the early 1830's as was Carroll County. The Sonny WHEELER information [Numbers 1 and 2 on KY webpage] which I have been reading about on your page, is looking for WHEELER's in Oldham County Ky. Since Oldham Co came in part from Gallatin Co., I have been trying to figure out a connection. That is all I know about my John WHEELER. Keep up the good work. It is appreciated. Roy D. WHEELER

Mr. Wheeler, I read with interest the information on your site. I was especially tickled at your spiritual comments. That is because I find so many Wheelers are people of faith. My father was one of seven sons; five of whom were ministers. All are deceased now, and I still miss them all. What a magnificient group thery were.

The name of my father and uncles were John Sherman (father), William Franklin, Jesse Arthur, Harrison Columbus, Samuel Wesley, Charles Spurgeon and George Wheeler. They were from Kentucky, but settled in Ohio: the eldest, William, was born in 1882.

I have other information and would love to know about my grandfather Wheeler's brothers, who remained in Kentucky. I am told the they also had many sons who were ministers. In fact I met a lady who was baptised by a John Wheeler in Kentucky. How do I find help? Thanks for your site.

My name is John Lloyd wheeler, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello!

I came across your site while looking for information on my great grandmothers on my father's side: Melinda Emeline WHEELER b 25 Dec 1853 and Laura Albany WHEELER. Don't know if they were related or any other information on my WHEELERs except that Melinde's mother's given name was Nancy and she was born Mar 1822 in KY. Melinde married my great grandfather, Jonathan E. WEST (b. 18 Dec 1848, d. 29 Sep 1922). I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me with this bunch.

BTW: I tried to sign your guest book and was unable to access it. [Given the time of day you wrote, I would say there was too much traffic for the guest book.] Good site, though. I'll visit again, soon! Chuck West e.mail: cwest@adsnet.com

Any way I need any advice I can get on finding a marriage license or birth cirtificate, death cirtificate for Layton or Betty. It seems I have hit a brick wall. I'm very new at this and eager to learn. Well thanks for this new avenue of search and I eagerly await for some connection. Thanks A lot, Sonny A. Wheeler III
