The following breif trees are made from other WHEELER comments left in our Guestbook by visitors and my "breif tree" left as a sample linked with the state of Virginia, Abbr. VA, Va. A state of the eastern United States on Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It was admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1788. Early colonizing attempts (1584-1587) by Sir Walter Raleigh failed, but in 1607 colonists dispatched by the London Company established the first permanent settlement at Jamestown (May 13). Virginia was a prime force in the move for independence and was the site of Lord Cornwallis's surrender in 1781. Virginia seceded in April 1861 and was the scene of many major battles during the Civil War, including the final campaigns that led to the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Richmond is the capital and Norfolk the largest city. Population, 6,216,568. (source citation is shown on the index page):

It was fun to surf your site and see all the WHEELER postings. I'm just beginning my research. My g'father was Winston William WHEELER of Cold Harbor, VA, b. in Spostsylvania Co. His father (my gg father) was George WHEELER. I can remember going up to visit my great grand mother when I was young and seeing a lot of WHEELER's on all the mailboxes on the country roads. Thanks again for your dedication to this website

Hope someone has some connections to this family which may help us both. Chuck Thornton, (CDWTjr@PegaNet.com or CDWTjr@AOL.com).

I believe I've seen information on this John Wheeler. Maybe in Fairfax Co., VA since that's where I often do research.I am interested in the Wheelers as well. My ancestor LEWIS ELLZEY (b1701) married MARY ?? I think she may have been a WHEELER. In her will of about 1790 she mentions land acquired from John WHEELER and a Richard WHEELER witnessed her will. She also had a grandson named John WHEELER TURNER.
Lewis Ellzey had land next to a John Wheeler in Fairfax Co. Was his future wife the daughter of this John who lived so near? Do you know of any Mary WHEELERs that would have been born in the early 1700s? If so, can you please tell me what you have. Thanks, Pam in Baton Rouge

Just wanted to thank you so very much for your site. I just started researching my Wheeler genealogy and had gotten quite stuck (a. because I am so new to this and b. because it's difficult to do research concerning the east coast from California).
Of all things, I read your guestbook [OTHER WHEELER TREES] and come across almost everything I needed to know about my great-grandfather's line, a posting by Kevin White concerning the WHEELERs of Yancey County, NC [who are posted on my Virginia page].
Unbelievable! Beginner's luck, maybe. [True, the notice had only been posted by me for less than one hour]
Again, many many thanks. I will check back regularly to see what else is new. Irene Wheeler Merrill
(XI)Subject: WHEELERS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 02:26:47 -0500 (EST) From: KEVIN WHITE croesus@worldnet.att.net
I HAVE ENJOYED YOUR WEBSITE, AND WAS GLAD TO FIND IT.
I BELIEVE I HAVE A PROBLEM IN COMMON WITH SOME OF YOUR OTHER CORRESPONDENTS. I CAN TRACE MY WHEELER ANCESTORS NO FARTHER THAN JOHN WHEELER, WHO WAS BORN IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA IN 1793 OR 4. I ONCE FOUND A SOURCE (I'M WORKING FROM MEMORY) IN OUR PUBLIC LIBRARY WHICH (PROBABLY MARRIAGE BONDS) LISTED WHEELERS MARRYING IN NEAR PROXIMITY BEFORE JOHN'S BIRTH - I BELIEVE OLIVER WHEELER MARRIED FAIRLEANNA HARRISON AND THOMAS WHEELER MARRIED MARY FRIEND. THESE MARRIAGES WERE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY BUT WHAT RELATION, IF ANY, TO JOHN THESE WHEELERS MAY BE I DON'T KNOW.
JOHN WHEELER AT SOME POINT MOVED TO YANCEY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. HE BECAME A BAPTIST CLERGYMAN. HE MARRIED RHODA RAY, THE EIGHTH CHILD AND ONLY DAUGHTER OF THOMAS RAY, JR. AND IVEY HENSLEY. IVEY WAS THE DAUGHTER OF HICKMAN HENSLEY AND UNKNOWN. THOMAS RAY, JR AND SR (SON AND FATHER) MOVED TO YANCEY AFTER THE REVOLUTION. THOMAS JR APPARENTLY SERVED WITH THE SIXTH VIRGINIA REGIMENT OF CONTINENTAL TROOPS (LATER MERGED INTO THE 2ND). THE RAYS WERE AMONG THE PIONEER FAMILIES OF YANCEY AND THEIR DECENDANTS ARE NUMEROUS THERE TODAY. HARDLY ANY WHEELERS CAN BE FOUND, THOUGH. THE RAYS WERE AT ONE TIME THE LARGEST SLAVEHOLDERS IN YANCEY, HAVING 30 SLAVES. RHODA RAY WHEELER AND HER HUSBAND INHERITED NONE OF THESE SLAVES AND APPARENTLY NEVER OWNED ANY.
JOHN AND RHODA RAY WHEELER HAD A LARGE FAMILY, APPARENTLY ALL BORN IN YANCEY COUNTY. THEIR DAUGHTER, JOYCE CAROLINE WHEELER, WAS MY GREAT-GREAT GRANDMOTHER. SHE MARRIED WILLIAM BURTON CREASMAN, BORN 1825 IN YANCEY COUNTY.
AT THE OUTBREAK OF THE CIVIL WAR A COMPANY WAS RAISED IN BURNSVILLE, THE COUNTY SEAT OF YANCEY. THIS WAS DONE ON JULY 4, 1861. AS WAS THE CUSTOM THE MEN ELECTED THEIR OFFICERS, AND WILLIAM BURTON CREASMAN WAS ELECTED CAPTAIN. HIS BROTHER, BERRY CREASMAN, WAS ELECTED A LIEUTENANT. AMONG THE PRIVATES IN THIS COMPANY WERE THE CAPTAIN'S BROTHER-IN-LAW, JOHN H. WHEELER, AND THE CAPTAIN'S FATHER-IN-LAW, JOHN WHEELER, AGE 68.
THE COMPANY MARCHED TO ASHEVILLE AND BECAME PART OF THE 29TH NORTH CAROLINA INFANTRY (COMPANY B). THIS WAS THE FIRST NORTH CAROLINA REGIMENT TO GO TO TENNESSEE (INSTEAD OF VIRGINIA) AND ONE OF ONLY A FEW. THEY FOUGHT AT STONE'S RIVER, CHICKAMAUGA, ALL THROUGH THE ATLANTA CAMPAIGN, THE DISASTROUS LAST INVASION OF TENNESSEE, AND FINISHED THE WAR AS PART OF THE GARRISON AT SPANISH FORT IN MOBILE, WHERE THEY WERE UNDER SEIGE FOR MORE THAN A MONTH.
THE REGIMENT WAS INITIALLY COMMANDED BY COLONEL ROBERT B. VANCE, WHOSE YOUNGER BROTHER ZEBULON WAS ELECTED GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA IN 1862 WHILE SERVING AS COLONEL OF THE 26TH NORTH CAROLINA. IN MAY, 1863, WHEN ROBERT VANCE WAS PROMOTED TO BRIGADIER GENERAL, WILLIAM BURTON CREASMAN WAS PROMOTED TO COLONEL COMMANDING THE 29TH NORTH CAROLINA. BERRY CREASMAN HAD BEEN MEDICALLY DISCHARGED IN 1863, AND JOHN WHEELER WAS MEDICALLY DISCHARGED AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR'S SERVICE, AT AGE 69, DUE TO "AGE AND A DISEAS(E) OF THE LIVER". COLONEL CREASMAN RESIGNED DECEMBER 29, 1864, AS SOON AS THE ARMY OF TENNESSEE HAD RECROSSED THE TENNESSEE RIVER FOLLOWING THE CALAMITOUS DEFEATS AT FRANKLIN AND NASHVILLE. WHY HE RESIGNED IS NOT REPORTED.
OF THE ORIGINAL FAMILY GROUP IN THIS COMPANY ONLY JOHN H. WHEELER APPARENTLY SERVED THROUGHOUT THE WAR.
COLONEL CREASMAN DIED, AGE 44, IN 1869. OF WHAT CAUSE IS UNKNOWN.
JOYCE CAROLINE WHEELER CREASMAN LATER REMARRIED, BECOMING THE THIRD WIFE OF ALBERT G. ANDERSON OF BUNCOMBE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. WHEN SHE HAD BEEN WIDOWED, APPARENTLY SUDDENLY, BY COLONEL CREASMAN'S DEATH, SHE HAD FIVE SMALL CHILDREN, INCLUDING A SON BORN DURING THE WAR YEARS IN SOUTH CAROLINA (SHE PROBABLY HAD TO "REFUGEE" THERE DUE TO UNSETTLED CONDITIONS FROM "OUTLIERS" AND "BUSHWHACKERS" IN HER HOME COUNTY OF YANCEY) AND A DAUGHTER BORN IN NOVEMBER, 1869, SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THE COLONEL'S DEATH (HE WAS ALIVE IN APRIL BUT APPARENTLY DEAD BY SEPTEMBER). THIS AFTER-BORN DAUGHTER BECAME MY GREAT-GRANDMOTHER, ALICE CREASMAN (NELSON).
I'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO CAN SORT OUT THE WHEELERS OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA OF THE POST-REVOLUTIONARY ERA.
THANKS AGAIN. KEVIN WHITE KJW92358@AOL.COM

Hi Bill, Hope it's okay to ask a question here. I'm looking for information on a Wheeler family that lived in Fairfax Co., VA in the 1700s. My ancestor MARY (?) ELLZEY may have been a Wheeler. She was born before 1717 and married LEWIS ELLZEY in 1733. She died in 1791 in Fairfax Co. In her will she mentioned land that was "granted by the proprietors of the Northern Neck to JOHN WHEELER". The land was in Fairfax Co. and I believe she was related to this John Wheeler. A possible father? Mary's will was witnessed by a RICHARD WHEELER in 1791. A possible relative? Finally, Mary's grandson, by daughter SARAH (ELLZEY) TURNER wife of WILLIAM TURNER, was named JOHN WHEELER TURNER. Was he named after his maternal grandfather? If you can give me any info. on these Wheelers, please e-mail me at psulzer@tyrell.net. Thanks! Pam in Baton Rouge
