Part IV of Bill's Family Quest

Claudia ROSS WHEELER Background Stories

Picture (147K)

Dorothy VAN DOREN WHEELER has her name as Claudie Evelyn ROSS and Glen Clarence WHEELER provided the Chaves County Death Records with Eva Claudine age 71 at the time of her death on July 20, 1936. She changed her own name.

A list of the children of George Hawley Ross and Marinda Lillian Barbee which is apparently from a Bible says their oldest child is Ellie Claudine Ross, born Wednesday, Jan 2, 1861 in Cooker Co, Missouri. A later census lists Claudine as born in Missouri. A different list (apparently a different Bible) lists Claudie Evelyn Ross born Aug. 30, 1865 in Quincy, Adams Co. Illinois. (George H Ross was living in Quincy in 1865) In East Grand Plains, Chaves Co, NM she was known as Eva C. Ross Wheeler. [added by Suzie Storr-June 1996]

From Evelyn Alice WHEELER HOBSON (2/5/96): Just a few remarks - I remember when I would go up to Gandma WHEELERs house to wait to go to Sunday School with them. Uncle Neil always drove the car for Gandma to go to teach her little children's class. In the spring time and summer she always wore a rose or several in her hair. She loved flowers and always had a garden out east of the house.

While she would be getting ready to go, Grandpa WHEELER would ask me if I wanted to match pennies (Grandma always had a small sack [flower sack] with her pennies). We would match pennies for about 30 minutes. He would let me keep some but most went back into the sack.

On Mother's Day she always had people bring a covered dish and they would all have a dinner. The families of East Grand Plains would usually bring food from home even the ones who didn't go to Sunday School and make a long day of the entertainment. The men would usually play horse shoes, kids would swing and jump rope after dinner. Women would visit and watch the little children.

In one of her bedroomes she always kept her candy, peanuts and popcorn she would use for Sunday School. Clarence and I were the oldest grandchildren so we got special things.
