Spelling: In his military records it is spelled throughout as HOWSAN. There are two papers that required a signature. The one of July 1868 appears to be his signature and it is HOWSAN. The other place where there had to be a signature his name was written by the clerk, then an X with "his mark" written next to it. That would lead one to wonder if at that time he could not write? I don't know. That particular paper was filled out when Howsan was 85 years old and it looked as if he had tried to sign it and couldn't do it so they had him just make a mark. In those papers is also a paper filed by his son Henry O. Cochran after his father's death to claim reimbursement from the accrued pension for expenses for the burial and on that paper it is also spelled HOWSAN .Also several places in his pension file note that the military apparently spelled his name Housan, "also known as Howsan S. Cochran".

JOHN A. COCHRAN, a well-known resident and agriculturist of Liberty township, Cowley county, left Illinois October 7, 1869, with the intention of effecting a location in the valley of the Walnut River, in Kansas, probably in what is now Cowley county. Mrs. Cochran did not wish to go so far to the West on account of the Indian troubles, and they settled in Cherokee county. The land on which they found a home, with other tracts in that vicinity, became a bone of contention between the railroad managements and the government. For the sake of peace and quiet Mr. Cochran sold out, and bought, in July, 1878, his present property in Liberty township, the west half of the northwest quarter of section 9, and the west half of the southwest quarter of section 4, township 33, range 6, east. At the time of its purchase from the agent, Mr. Truesdale, it was but little improved, with the exception of a house, 12 feet square, into which Mr. Cochran moved his family the following April. This building is now used as a stable, the present fine, six-room house having been constructed in 1888. Many substantial and valuable improvements have been made on the place. There is a five-acre orchard, which is doing well. Mr. Cochran is quite extensively interested in Shorthorn cattle, and in Poland- China hogs. He is quite a general farmer, and, cultivates oats, corn, cane, and alfalfa. By his close attention to timber culture, he had changed very materially the appearance of what was a prairie farm. He has been successful, has preserved good health, and is highly pleased with the results of his labors in Cowley county. For seven years Mr. Cochran has served as assessor of Liberty township. Mr. Cochran was born February 14 1830, in Crawford county, Illinois, and when still a small boy was taken by his parents, John and Elizabeth (Seaton) Cochran, to Greene county, Indiana.
John Cochran, who was a tanner and shoemaker by trade, was a native of Massachusetts, where he was born about the year 1790. He went to Ohio about 1812, and with three of his brothers served in the second war with England. His father was a Scotchman, who served in the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth Seaton was of German descent, and was born in Pennsylvania. She married John Cochran in Indiana, and with him moved to the vicinity of Vincennes. He died in Christian county,Illinois, in 1866. He was an old-line Whig, and for fifteen years was justice of the peace. Mrs. Elizabeth (Seaton) Cochran died in 1833, having become the mother of five boys: H. Seaton; Elzy and Sydney, both dead; John A., whose name introduces this biographical sketch; and W. H..
H.Seaton, the eldest, resides in Washington, but formerly lived in Barber county, Kansas, from which county he was twice elected representative in the state legislature. W. H. lives near Caldwell, Sumner county, Kansas.in his youth, John A. Cochran learned the blacksmith's trade, but farming has been his main business in life. He had a public school education, and removed to Illinois when he was twenty-five years of age. Mr. Cochran en-listed in the Union army, August 11, 1862 becoming a member of Company F 116th Reg., 111. Vol. Inf. He entered as a private, and secured promotion to the rank of orderly sergeant, and that of first lieutenant, by his soldierly qualities, and by faithful performance of the duties imposed upon him. The regiment was attached to the 1st Brigade of the 2d Division of the 15th Army Corps, and his sensations on entering his first battle at Chick-asaw Bayou are still keen and fresh recollections with Mr. Cochran. Participating in the various events and incidents of the famous "March to the Sea," the closing battle of his military experience was at Fort McAllister. With his regiment he marched north through the Carolinas, and was mustered out at Washington District of Columbia, returning to Springfield, Illinois, for his pay. Mr. Cochran went to his home in McLean county, in that state, and gladly resumed the labors of a peaceful life, which he had abandoned at the call of his imperiled country.
Before the war, Mr. Cochran was married, in Illinois, to Lizzie Jordan, who was born in Indiana, and who died in November, 1899, when about sixty -three years old. To this union were born six children: Alfred P.; James A.; Jennie Lynn; Nellie; John W.; and Julia (deceased). Alfred P. Cochran owns the farm north of his fathers, in section 4, and was married to a Miss Castor, by whom he has had six children: Floyd; Grace; Forrest; Fred (deceased); Frank, and Finas. James A. lives with his father; he was married to Hattie Olington, and they have two children Fannie E. and Margaret 0. Jennie Lynn married Ed. Nicholson, and has her home near Elkhart, Illinois; they have two children, Nellie and Myrtle. Nellie married Newton J. Julian, and resides near Blackwell, Oklahoma; she is the mother of three children: Laird, Eunice and Clara. John W. was married to Eliza Thompson, who formerly lived in Liberty township, Cowley county, and is a resident of Guthrie, Oklahoma; they have two daughters living, Ethel and Edith Elizabeth, and lost a son, Arthur.
Mr. Cochran cast his first presidential vote for John C. Fremont, and for many years was an active Republican. When the People's party was organized in Cowley county, he united with it, and among other honors received its nomination to the office of probate judge. He has served as trustee of the township, and was identified, with the Grange and the Farmers' Alliance. He is a member of the Dexter Post, Grand Army of the Republic.
The Cochran family has ever been devoted to the Union, and has made a record of which it may be justly proud. The grandfather was in the Revolutionary War, the father and three brothers served in the War of 1812; John A. and three brothers were in the Civil War, where he was promoted to be a lieutenant, just before he was mustered out. Three sons of H. Seaton Cochran were also soldiers in the Civil War; and the oldest of these, together with his son, was a member of the "Rough Riders," a unique organization of the Spanish-American War. 'The family is a notable one. The venerable years of John A. Cochran, and his honorable character, and strict integrity, have placed him high in public esteem. He has a host of friends, who recognize his worth, and his right to a prominent place in any record intended to commemorate the leading men of the community.

General Notes: James J. Cochran was a veteran of the Cival War. He took part in many battles as an infantryman in Co. A, 97th Regiment of Indiana VOlunteers. He was in the following battles: Vicksburg MS fell after a 6 week seige 4 July 1863, Chattonooga TN at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge 23-25 November 1863, Reseca to New Hope CHurch GA 25-27 May 1864 and Kenesaw Mountain GA 27June1864 until his capture during the battle of Atlanta 22July 1864. James was a prosoner at Andersonville GA and later at Florence SC until near the end of the war, maybe bu 15February 1865 as General Sherman made his drive north with Columbea SC on fire and the Union Army with an insatiable desire to wreak vengence on the state of South Carolina. While being exposed to the elements and starvation of prison life, his weight dropped to a low of 79 pounds when he was finally released. James returned to Greene County IN and settled on the family form in Taylor TWP. He was a farmer all his life and left a rich legacy for the future generations of Cochrans to follow.

Mrs. Lyda Jones Succumbs At Advanced Age of 89 Years
Kirbyville, Texas Jan. 25 -
Mrs. Lyda Jones, 89, life-long resident of southeast Texas, died Wednesday
night at the home here of her son Cecil Jones. Mrs. Jones, who was known to
friends as "Aunt Lyda" was born at Farrsville, Texas in Newton County, in
1845. She lived at Farrsville until her husband died a few years ago and
since then has been residing with her children in Louisiana and Texas.
Funeral services will be held at the Farrsville chapel in Newton County, with
Rev S. W. Berryman, pastor of the Church of Christ in Newton, of which she
was a member presiding. The exact time was to be announced later.
Mrs. Jones is survived by three sons, James of Denton, Cecil, of Kirbyville,
and Jack, of Farrsville, and two daughter, Mrs. May Langham, of Farrsville,
and Mrs. Ben James of DeRidder.
Stringer Undertaking company is in charge of arrangements.

Mehitable Bennington called "Hetty" married William Pierce Stone (also from Indiana). They raised their family and made a home for a number of
their nieces and their children who had lost husbands in the Civil War. Wm. P. Stone was a Confederate soldier and because his brothers left in Indiana were in the Union Army and he
feared he might kill one of them if he shot a gun, he served as a corpman and took care of cavalry horses.
These Bennington and Stone grandparents are buried in Bleakwood Cemetery.
Two of the Stone girls married two Denby brothers. Sarah Elizabeth (Petty) married Frank Denby. Alice Eudora married James Rufus Denby. Rufus and Alice were my dad's (Arch
Denby) parents. The Denby boys' parents were William and Sarah Ann Weeks Denby from North Carolina and Georgia who settled in Newton County in 1850s.
