In 1805, quite a colony arrived in the Aurora woods, from Blandford, Mass., among them a family of CANNONs, who have been prominently identified with the history of the town ever since. Mary BUTLER CANNON, a widow with four grown sons and two daughters, was the pioneer mother of all. The boys,
John, George, Stephen and Eli, grew to be among the most substantial and public-spirited men of the place. High in moral and strong in religious convictions, they gave an impress to the little settlement, which made
for righteousness and order.
Among the number in this colony was the family of John COCHRAN, who had purchased sixteen hundred acres of land in Aurora. Mr. COCHRAN was taken sick on the way, and the teams were hurried
forward to Buffalo, where help and medicine might be obtained. Mrs. COCHRAN, with one daughter, remained with him, while the two other girls were sent with the company. Rhoda, being helpless from rheumatism, was brought all the way on a bed, her sister, Laura, a girl of thirteen, serving as nurse and companion.

Their trials and hardships on the way form a sad chapter of the pioneer days, and space does not admit to the recital here. It was written up and published some years ago. A man by the name of MILLS was hired to bring the girls to Aurora, but Laura was compelled to walk a good part of the way. She followed the wagon day after day, sometimes with sore and blistered feet, hungry and weary, but with a pluck and perseverance which characterized her whole after-life. One night the man unhitched the team, and with his wife, departed and left the girls in the deep, dense woods, four miles north of Burton, alone all night. They were hungry, defenseless and forsaken, and Laura was taken ill, but, fortunately, was better by morning. The next day he appeared and brought them near a settler's cabin, where he wholly deserted them
twenty-five miles from their destination. When Laura comprehended the situation she gave way to bitter tears, but rallied from her despondency, made known their forlorn condition to the sympathetic people of the cabin,
asking for food and shelter for herself and sister until she could communicate with friends, for which she offered to work, resolutely determining to earn their support until their future was revealed. The generous captain of a boat, which plied between Mantua and Burton on the Cuyahoga, with grain to the mill there, offered to bring them to Mantua. There they learned of the death of their father at Buffalo, and that their brother had gone to meet the desolate mother. He was the first white man buried at Buffalo, which then consisted of but a few rude cabins. Rhoda COCHRAN, the crippled girl, died in 1806, aged twenty-four, and was the first person buried in Aurora. The mother lived to experience nineteen years of pioneer life.

The brave girl, Laura, married Stephen CANNON, and her subsequent history and long, useful life make an interesting chapter in the developing history of the little town. She was a famous horsewoman,
braving the terrors of the woods to visit the sick at night when necessity called, being skillful in the use of herbs and roots and home remedies. Many of the babies of that day were arrayed in their first suit by her motherly hands. One day she mounted her horse and rode to Randolph for certain medicines needed for a sick patient, and arrived at home at ten o'clock at night, after a ride of fifty-two miles. The streams had no bridges, and Streetsboro, still an unbroken wilderness, was traversed after dark. The wolves followed the horse on every side, with snapping teeth and gleaming eyes. She was a weaver of yarn carpets, those marvelous and enduring productions of our foremothers' days, as well as full cloth and "kersey blankets. In her fifty-fifth year, besides her housework, she wove six hundred yards of woolen cloth, five blankets,
one hundred yards yarn carpet, five plaid fancy shawls and some other odd jobs, and did her own coloring, in seven months' time. We stagger at the account of such wonderful industry in this age of light and frivolous "fancy" work.

She died in 1880, at the age of eighty-eight.

Harper Cochran lived in Clark and Scott Counties for many years. He married Lydia Collings, Mar 29, 1817, Clark County. She was the daughter of “old Long Knife” William E.E. Collings, a Revolutionary War soldier. Harper and Lydia’s children were born in that area. After 1850, Harper moved to Missouri with his youngest son, Henry. Later, during the Civil War, the family moved back to Indiana. John Henry, son of Henry, was born July 23, 1865. In 1870, Harper, Henry, and his family were in Randolph Co., AR. Henry died there Mar. 30, 1871. Harper died in Boone Co., AR, April 1875.

General Notes: James Cochran was the son of Glass and Mehitable Fuller Cochran. He was born October 19, 1796 in Blandford. Massachusetts. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. He married Rosanna Manning in 1829. He fathered eight children, namely: Charles, Jane (who married William Barker), John Amos, Peter, James, Martha (who married Isaac Graham), William and a daughter who died as an Infant. Jane Cochran Barker and Martha Cochran Graham were the mothers and ancestors of many Greene County citizens. Peter and John Amos never married. Peter died of a camp disease during the Civil War, and is buried in LaGrange, Tennessee. Nothing further is known about Charles and William. James married Louisa "Eliza" Hambright Stormer. She was the widow of George Stormer, who died during the Civil War in Tennessee. Louisa was the great-granddaughter of Fredrick Hambright, one of the heroes of the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.

James was a soldier in the Civil War. He took part in many battles as an infantryman from Co. A, 97th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. Among the many battles were the siege of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Reseca, Kenesaw Mountain, New Hope Church and Atlanta. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. He was a prisoner in Andersonville, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. Here he was exposed to the elements and starvation and weighed only 79 pounds when he was finally released. He returned to Greene County and settled on the family farm in Taylor Township. He was a farmer all his life and left a rich legacy for the future generations of Cochrans to follow.

James and Louisa were the parents of Lucy (who married John Roach), Peter, Hettie (who married Tom Townsend), Luke, and Charles. Pete married Eva Clark and had two children, Walter and James (who died as an infant). Both Pete and Eva died in an epidemic in 1893 and Walter was raised by his grandparents and his Uncle Luke. Lucy Cochran Roach had four children, Lillie, Louisa "Jenny," Rosie, and James Matthew. Hettie Cochran Townsend was the mother of five; Marvel, Burley, Rodney, GoIda, who married Roy York, and Ted. Charles Cochran had one son, Henry. Luke married Sona Hasler, daughter of John N. Hasler and Julia Ann Lester, both from old Greene County families. Based on Elizabeth Lewis' father taking the family to Quachita, LA in 1825( See notes for her father) I
can see that Joseph Sidney must have gone down there to marry her in
1827--it's unlikely she stayed behind in Greene Co, Indiana for two years
before the marriage. She was only 12 years old when the family went to LA.
Joseph Sidney was 22 years old in 1827 and could have made the trip by
himself. So I guess the marriage and the birth of the first three kids would
be in Quachita Co, LA. In 1832 the Lewis family went to TX and Joseph
Sidney/Elizabeth Lewis must have gone at the same time and his brothers
Nathaniel and Henry also. They all ended up in Jasper and Newton Counties
which are right next to each other.

called Morris ferry was in family around 1830 or before. Jonathan
did not
start it. Lorenzo is my GreatGrandFather. There is quite a
story about
Jonathan in our family and it is not at all nice. My Great Grand
Mother
said he had Lorenzo go to the Civil War in his place with the
promise of
payment on his return. Then upon the return he refused to pay him
anything.
There is much more to the story and accounts by many Morris people,
all of
which agree on the basic facts. We consider Jonathan somewhat a
coward and
fraud.

To the pine forests of Newton County, home to my pioneer ancestors, I feel a strong sense of belonging.
My great-great-grandparents , Reuben and Betsy Cochran Bennington, their children, Betsy's mother Mehitable Cochran (widow of Glass Cochran), Betsy's brother William and his wife Pally (sister to Reuben) came to the Newton area about 1842. They joined Betsy's brothers, Nathaniel, Joseph Sidney and Henry Cochran, who came to the area in 1830s (1832).
Reuben had a water-mill on Thickety Creek and he gave land for the Bleakwood Cemetery. A state historical marker tells of this and the mill.
One of their daughters, Mehitable Bennington called "Hetty" married William Pierce Stone (also from Indiana). They raised their family and made a home for a number of
their nieces and their children who had lost husbands in the Civil War. Wm. P. Stone was a Confederate soldier and because his brothers left in Indiana were in the Union Army and he
feared he might kill one of them if he shot a gun, he served as a corpman and took care of cavalry horses.
These Bennington and Stone grandparents are buried in Bleakwood Cemetery.
Two of the Stone girls married two Denby brothers. Sarah Elizabeth (Petty) married Frank Denby. Alice Eudora married James Rufus Denby. Rufus and Alice were my dad's (Arch
Denby) parents. The Denby boys' parents were William and Sarah Ann Weeks Denby from North Carolina and Georgia who settled in Newton County in 1850s.
These and other early settlers of the area were strong, courageous, faithfilled pioneers who carved homes in a wilderness where Indians still lived. The lend was a forest of virgin pines
where sunlight filtered through straw covered ground where plentiful herds of deer, bear, and other game foraged.
When I was eleven years old I wrote the Governor's office begging that some of the virgin pine forests would be protected. Of course that didn't happen; that was an irreplaceable loss.
All of these pioneers are gone now, but they left a legacy of integrity and "good ol' East Texas horse sense.

William lived in Section 15 of Warren Co., Iowa, near Lacona in 1879. He was a farmer and stock raiser and owned a farm of 225 acres. This farm is where his parents settled in 1855 when they moved to Iowa. He was the Republican candidate for Representative to the Legislature in 1879. He had been a town assessor, clerk and county supervisor. (The family moved to Harrison County, Iowa).

A.J. Corwin was born in Knox County (the area he was from was later a part of Morrow Co.), Ohio, October 12, 1835. He was a twin. He departed this life January 7, 1926, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Olive Wilson, in New Virginia, IA. After being left an orphan at the age of six weeks, he came with his grandparents to Iowa in the year 1853. They located at this time in Warren Co., Iowa, in Section 14 near Lacona and he resided there the rest of his life.
He was united in marriage to Hester Cochran in 1858. Seven children were born to this union. Surviving are Martha McNair of New York, William of Woodbine, IA, Oliver of Logan, IA, and Ollie of New Virginia, IA. His first wife and three children preceded him in death.
He was again united in marriage to Lillian Barstow, who also preceded him in death.
Although Mr. Corwin never affiliated with the church, he always was a student of the Bible and a good citizen.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Olive Wilson, by Rev. Clifford Cody, pastor of the M.E. Church, on Friday, January 8th, at 2:30, and the body laid to rest in the New Virginia Cemetery.
