St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in
Kirbyville with burial at Antioch Cemetery in Buna under the direction of
Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at the
church.
A native of Buna, he lived in the Kirbyville area all of his life and was a
retired merchant and World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Richardson of Kirbyville; sons, Martin G.
Richardson of Kirbyville and Gerew W. Richardson of Nederland; brothers, John
F. Richardson of Mauriceville and Lynn A. Richardson of Avenel, N.J.; sister,

EXCERPTS FROM THE STORY OF MY LIFE
GEORGE WRIGHT COCHRAN 1995


It is now probably late October of my life and time that I recorded the recollections of my life for those that follow:

We used to live on the old Arnold place, a couple of miles southwest of Chouteau,Oklahoma. It was spelled Choteaw at that time. Dad had a high top Model "T" Ford which was mostly to go to church (Baptist). We seemed to always sweat whether we had enough gas to make it to town. Uncle Jim Cochran was a preacher (Methodist I believe) and had a beautiful voice for singing. Uncle Herman Cochran was more of an evangelist. I believe it was Uncle Jim who played the guitar.The sound was intriguing to me and would play beautiful moments in my life later. It was late at night to this small kid (probably (9:00 PM), when my family along with Uncle Jim and Aunt Maggie arrived home from Church.The porch was dark and no one had lit the coal oil lamp. This sleepy kid opened the screen door but couldn't move his right foot. So he screamed out "SOMEBODY STEPPED ON MY SHOE STRING!". My older siblings and especially Uncle Jim would remind me of this into eternity, I suppose.

I still remember two biscuit and fried egg sandwiches, wrapped in newspaper lunches carried to school, although at the time, the term sandwich was reserved for something more expensive and nice. We did not have brown bags and the term "brownbagging it" had not been invented.

I remember one summer day our pond was almost dry and the catfish were desperately trying to breath at the top of the muddy water. To us kids the smell of catfish frying was foremost on our minds. Geneva flipped a catfish out with a stick or something and I caught it in mid-air, fins and all, with my bare hands. I still remember the pain.

We lived later on the Johnnie Walsh place west of Chouteau. It was a hot , dry summer day again and Paul was trying to clean out an old spring for a source of water. I remember the fear of the dynamite and the water moccasin snakes. Paul brought Old Dan the saddle horse, who was a member of the family for years and ridden mostly bareback.

Later, we moved to the best farm in the area just north of the Chouteau School, just past the cemetery, as tenant farmers. It was great living for us, being very close to school and town.
Dad's horse and mule powered farming was being outdone by tractor farming though and poor Dad, how he must have suffered. I can see him now whistling with worry. Bailing wire was what we had to do repairs with.

Lillie and Clarence were dating. Dad worried about his beautiful daughters. "Lillie Belle, you better come on in now." "All right, daddy." Somewhere about that time, Paul was sweet on Verna Lee Stubblefield. Willie Mae and Louise were dating and later married
Otis and Owen Crow. I remember calling "CAW, CAW, CAW" as only a younger, brat brother would.

Nellie at some point got and learned how to play a guitar. I borrowed it often and learned how to sing and play. I never was of Bob Will San Antonio Rose quality, but pretty darn good on the old songs and ballads. Thegirls on the school bus acted as though they just loved "Oh Jphnny, oh Johnny, how you can love." A few years later, a quiet "sweet thing" loved my limited classical guitar. Then years later at a ranch home party with our friends, Arlene Homan, nurse, mother and the school principal's wife I'll just say "enjoyed" my risqué rendition of "Ball of Yarn". It started something like this.......accented by a guitar
twang ever so often: "It was in the month of June and the flowers were in bloom, and the rooster chased the hens around the barn,Wheeeeeen I met a purty miss, and".........(well, the rest is classified.) "and politely asked her this"....."Stop George! Get back to the late 30's!"..."OK"

I attended the Chouteau area school system though grade 11 1/2. As high school freshmen, Jim Garton, John Quigley, and I chose General Science (with the girls) over agriculture. It was nice in the honorary study hall to have the girls ask us to sit with them to help with their math, in which we three guys were pretty good.

Seems like it was in the middle 30's, I recall a worried school superintendent calling an assembly outside in front of the tall steps of the three story school to hear by way on short wave radio some man in a high pitch voice ranting and raving, non-stop except as punctuated by a throng of people in a frenzied "Heil Hitler." I didn't understand but we knew the situation was not good. We were told that was Adolph Hitler in Germany. Many of us recalled inklings of information about Germany and World War I.

I remember the big garden and Mom's extensive canning in half gallon fruit jars. I remember 13 people at our dinner table for the noonday meal: Mom, Dad, 10 kids and Vollie Harding, our hired hand. (Dollar a day, I think)

Jim Garten and I each had a crystal radio, the only radio in the house. KVOO in Tulsa and Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys came in loud and clear on my headphones, as did a station in Mexico at night. The Mexican station mostly advertised Dr. J.R. Brinkley of the Brinkley Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, specializing in men's prostate problems.

We had no electricity. We had plenty of eggs, milk and potatoes. we purchased flour in 50 or 100 pound sacks, usually charging it at Vernie Wisdom's store in Chouteau.The flour sacks were in nice prints and were used to make clothing. Mom furnished a gallon of fresh
whole milk to a Chouteau cafe each morning for 50 cents. We had lots of corn bread, milk and onions for supper. We cooled our milk all day in gallon syrup buckets suspended in the cold water of our hand dug well down in back of the mule barn. Mom, bless her heart, also took in washing. The older girls helped. Water was heated in a black kettle over an open fire . Clothing was scrubbed on a rub-board. Later, Mom had a gasoline powered washing machine whose main feature was being difficult to start. I've heard Mom, in extreme frustration, use the four letter "S" word, very loud and clear.

As kids, Jack and I only had one good pair of overalls and shirt. Mom would wash them each Saturday so they would look nice for Sunday School the next day. THe wise and loving Sunday School teacher always made up feel good by complimenting our beautiful blue shirts. We would wear them to school all the Week, faithfully changing into old clothes the minute we got home.

Dad was the force behind discipline. "George, I'll whip you!" or "George, I'll take my belt to you!" Dad also served on the school board for several years, even though he had only an eighth grade education. He was interested mostly in assuring morality and especially old time Baptist religious principals among the teachers.

Our horse and mule powered farming system was falling behind the more efficient mechanical power systems of the day. I remember day- dreaming of owning my own farmand having a tractor. That would have made life perfect. And so it was in 1938, Mr. Duncan of Brown-Duncan stores in Tulsa purchased the farm we had rented for severalyears and refused to rent us the farm for another year.. Dad, with the help of Mr. Crockett, obtained a "school loan" at 3% and purchased his first "owned" farm about 2 miles southwest of Wagoner, Wagoner, OK. It was the old Jim Dyer place, three small farms combined to make 240 acres. About 80 acres was good farm land and the rest was poor,eroded or pasture. Talk was old Jim Dyer was an outlaw of sorts, robbed a train near Fort Smith, Arkansas one time. We kept looking for the loot on the farm but never found any. The abstract revealed that just before his death, he transferred the place "to my beloved wife, with love and affection." She, in turn, lost it in foreclosure soon there after. We moved from Chouteau to Wagoner in late 1938 by wagon. The cattle were driven. There were two houses on the place. The best was located way back across the creek. Mom chose the better located house in the corner of the farm closest to town and at a section line road intersection. Uncle Ben Cochran and his family used the other house for a few years and later (or was it the other way around) Otis and Willie Mae and family lived there. Otis built a nice storm shelter and helped Dad & Mom fix up their water well.

In January 1940 while a senior in Wagoner High School, I joined Company A, 180th Infantry, 45th Division of the Oklahoma National Guard based in Wagoner. I graduated from high school in May of that year. World War II was at hand, but I had not realized it. On September 16th, 1940 we were called up to active duty and I was involved with infantry training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. We then moved to a newly constructed Camp Barkley at Abilene, Texas in 1941 and on to Fort Devens, Mass., Where we trained in beach landing invasion tactics. By this time I had worked up to Buck (3 striper) sergeant
and was a 12 man rifle squad leader. Also by this time, I had learned "This could get a little rough" The "dog faces" always absorb the most hardships of war. I had tried unsuccessfully to get into the newly formed anti- tank battalion that would lessen the endless walking with a heavy load and where I could have a bit more then the ground tosleep on. One Wednesday afternoon, against the orders or our company first sergeant, Haskel "Hack" Brown of Wagoner, Wagoner, OK, Joe Eddison the company assistant supply sergeant from Wagoner, and I sneaked off to take the exam to qualify for army pilot training.........I PASSED, GLORY BE!!!!!!!!!! Joe, bless his heart, failed and got drunk as a skunk that night. Good men were needed everywhere an that time and Hack just hated to lose one of his trained personnel.This actually saved my life. All of the squad leaders of my old platoon, including my replacement, were supposedly killed in action in North Africa and Sicily a few months later.

After having passed the pilot's qualification exam, it was two weeks before I received orders transferring me out of the infantry and into the Army Air Corps, two weeks during which Hack really rode my ass!!!

I arrived at Westover Army Air Field, Mass. in September, 1942 to discover there would be a short delay before I could enter pilot training. But no problem, they would give me a few days furlough. Another potential cadet and I did New York City, all the sight seeingthings young soldiers would do. It was great for this country boy from Oklahoma.

Back at Westover Field, I discovered the USO and participated in dancing lessons a couple of times. On moonlit nights while I was assigned to guard the B-17's, I would practice, just me and my rifle: "Let's see now, two steps in and two steps out. now, step, skip, step, walk, step, skip step, walk. That should scare the Hell out of any Krauts out there."

In December, 1942, I became an aviation cadet and started ground school at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. In February and March, 1943, I completed primary flying training at Coleman Field, Coleman,Texas including my most important solo flight in a PT-19. I was in flight class 43-g. In April and May, 1943, I completed my basic training at Perrin Field, Sherman, Texas flying BT-13's. Here, we got to decide which we wanted: go into fighter planes or heavier multiengine aircraft. I chose the latter and my instructors
concluded that was where I had the most potential. In June and July, 1943, I completed advanced training in twin engine aircraft at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas. On July 29, 1943, I graduated from pilot training and received my wings and 2nd Lieutenants goldbars and became a Reserve commissioned Officer.

My next assignment was Tarrant Field, Fort Worth, Texas to get checked out in B-24's (Heavy 4 engine bomber). It just so happened that at the same time, a girl from a small East Texas town was also helping out in the war effort in Fort Worth, making like a tom-tom on a typewriter for Texas Steel Manufacturing Company, which at he time was making mortar shell casings. Blind date at 11:00 PM................you know............sexy secretary.....a young Air Corps Lieutenant on a high.....Guy Lumbardo playing "He wears a
pair of silver wings"....WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, I met and romanced Helen. I remember a couple of months later I slammed the taxi door on my fingers. I guess the fact that I had a diamond for her in my pocket made me nervous. You know, it's amazing how things turn out sometimes. we had our 50th wedding anniversary last year on April 23, 1994.

On October 7, 1943, I was assigned as a B-24 pilot at Harlingen Army Air Field, Harlingen,Texas, where the mission was to train B-24 copilots and aerial gunners. B-24's were in short supply at first so we did the job training gunners in AT-6's.

It was in a T-6 plane, towing a target over Padre Island. that I had my first of two close calls with death in 1944: engine sputtering, base about 30 miles away, trailing black smoke, target operator having difficulty cutting the target loose.......Training paid off, made the runway and the engine stopped. Lucky, no engine fire.

The second close call was in a formation of three B-24's. I was on the right wing, crossing down and under the lead plane. I lost sight of him!!!!!!! My fault!!!!!!! Very bad booboo! 36 men!.......Almost collided with the lead plane. God, how Dad must have been praying for me.

Later, I got good as a B-24 pilot and was made Instructor Pilot. The maintenance officer always selected me to assist him in ferrying aircraft. One such trip was to Amarillo where I had once met Maxine while participating in a parade. Helen and I corresponded regularly and she mentioned a Navy officer named Fred.. Helen knew of Maxine but if I was going to be flying to Amarillo, that was no fair!! And guess what, suddenly Helen accepted my proposal!. We got married and set up housekeeping abovean old closed service station: ice box, much love. Later, we shared a home with a lady who's husband was overseas. ) I rode to work with a fellow pilot, Bill Schenerre, in his old Plymouth. Life was god. I was very fortunate. One time I picked up Jack who was training in B-17's in Louisiana. I was in a T-6. We flew to Muskogee with Jack in the back seat. Jack made the landing in Muskogee, no sweat.

On VEDay1945, I left Harlingen for Maxwell Field, Alabama to be checked out in B_29's for the war with Japan. Helen went home to see her Mama. I lucked out again when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan before I got there. On VJ Day, Helen and I fought "The Battle of 12th Street" (celebration) in Kansas, mostly from our hotel room . There was a special tune from that day that my mind plays over and over but not divulge the name of the tune or the band. "Southern Scandal"?????????Woody Herman???????????

In late 1945, I decided to compete for a military career as an officer. Lots of loose ends, short transfers, downsizing, working in supply, logistics, minimum flying, hanging in there. I was now a First Lieutenant with a good record, desirable flying ratings and lots ofcompetition. There was lots of duty where Helen could not follow. Mid 1946 found me in Germany, flying B-17's photomapping Europe. In November,1946, I won the privilege to buy one of the first Volkswagens (Hitler's "People's Car") produced after the war for $645. Helen joined me in December and we lived among the Germans in a requisitioned house with a built-in "out house", no flush. It was roughing it but we loved it. In March, 1947, we returned to the states for my separation, reduction in forces. The next 1 1/2 years were spent at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I was a master sergeant of supply. In may, 1949, I was appointed captain in the Air Force Reserve, with the permanent rank of Master Sergeant. Janna was born, but lived only 5 days. Now in the twilight of our lives, we need her so.

In December, 1948, my flying experience was again needed by Uncle Sam and I spent the following 10 months flying the Berlin Airlift during the Russian blockade and earning the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster. My active duty rank was 1st Lieutenant.

Following the Berlin Airlift, I was a supply officer in a basic training squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Later, in January, 1951, I was promoted to the active duty rank of Captain and worked in Base Mess Supply. I earned my senior pilot rating.

IN May, 1952, I reported to the 6147th Tactical Control Group at K-47 Air Field in Korea and flew T-6 spotter planes along the front lines directing air strikes using smoke rockets to mark the targets. Later, I would live with the South Korean Army as a forward air controller and liaison officer. During this tour of duty, one plane I was flying received
severe anti-aircraft damage and wounding myobserver. Again.........."Luck be a lady!" and Dad's praying got me through. We made it back to base using force to pry the landing gear down. I received the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross for this little caper. I also received my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Oak Leaf Cluster for my Air Medal while in Korea.

My major heart warming event of my Korean war experience was when my brother jack was able to get away from his front line duties with the 45th Division and visit me back in the much safer place where I lived at K-47 Air Field, beside Un-necessary Mountain.

Returning stateside in late 1952, I spent a short time training Air Force reserve pilots and working in supply at busy O'Hare airport near Chicago.

In April, 1953, I was assigned the best flying job in the Air Force, A SAM (Special Air Mission) pilot, responsible for taking the commanders and other VIP's where they needed to go. I was based at O'Hare and later at Hamilton AFB, near San Francisco. Once, during army maneuvers, I landed on a small airstrip at Fort Ord, California with a total of 13 General's stars aboard. I was flying a plushed up gooney bird (C-47/DC-3). Another time, I operated a gooney bird out of a remote dry lake bed, no landing strip or markers. I had 3 state governors aboard one day. One trip out of Chicago, I was copilot hauling a USO troop. Helen had driven me to the airfield and we were having breakfast with the pilot, an older guy, when Helen pensively thought out loud "I wish you guys would put me in a duffel bag and take me with you." "Humpo, the pilot, joked "Why take along a sandwich when you're going to a banquet!" TILT!!!!!!!

Yes, it was a gentleman's "flying job", nothing down and dirty, but it also produced another brush with death. Flying regularly in the mountains along the Pacific coast, if you weren't careful, you could find a big rock in those clouds. Major Stenvers, the squadroncommander, and I were dead-heading (no passengers) home to Hamilton AFB from a mission in the eastern US. AS we were flying west past Reno, Nevada, an airline pilotreported icing conditions in the Sierra Mountains ahead. We were flying a plush C-131twin engine Convair, the best ship in our inventory. I was in the right (copilot) seat. Major Stenvers barked "WING HEAT, PROP DEICERS, CARBURATOR ANTI-ICERS." I might also add that this was at night. Soon as we were over the mountains, we started picking up ice. "POP-POP" as bits of ice were flung off the props and into the fuselage just aft of the pilot's compartment. The wings were also picking up ice, affecting the airflow over the wings and resulting in less wing lift. A bell rings! Too much heat is goinginto the wings! The engineer, standing behind the two pilots, quickly adjusted the controls.
The ringing stops. Air speed is down to minimum flying speed, 130 knots as I recall, with this ice load to keep from stalling out. "GET A LOWER ALTITUDE" . "Major Stenvers screams " THERE ISN"T ANY!!!!!." I scream back "WE ARE AT THE MIMIMUM!" (safe altitude). Major Stenvers was having to sacrifice altitude at about 200 feet per minute to be able to maintain minimum air speed to fly. I scanned the charts and found a little airport with ILS (instrument Landing system) just west of the highest mountains and off to our left. I tuned it in and got a good reading. When the needle moves slowly from left to right and crosses the center point, we will be to the west of that ILS beam and over lower mountains. "Go check the back!" Major Stenvers directs the engineer. What he probably meant was that it's much safer back there. We are below minimum altitude now and slowly descending. Altituude is now below the tops of the highest mountains along the airway. I explained the ILS situation to Major Stenvers. Air traffic control calls us for a report. I report our flying circumstances and our ILS position situation and hopes. Both pilots are Intensely busy. Pilot is nursing the airplane and I'm checking, double checking, adjusting and calculating. Suddenly, the ILS needle begins to move!.........Past the center point! WE are past the highest mountains! the ride smoothes out. We are in warmer air now and losing ice. I report to Air Traffic Control and copy further clearance instructions to home. the engineer returns to thecockpit and truefully reported he had been in the far back covered with something for crash protection Stenvers and I felt only envy. The whole episode lasted probably 20 minutes.

In December, 1955, I was promoted to reserve major. In August, 1958, I was granted the aeronautical rating of Command Pilot, wearing silver wings with a center star encircled within a wreath. To me, it was a great honor and I wore them proudly.

In early 1959, I was ordered to Japan. I was B-29 pilot qualified and holding a secret clearance. I was assigned to the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. Although I did not know it then, B-29's were being used on hush-hush millions over Russia and in 1960, a B-29 and crew was secretly "lost'. Anyway, my orders were to proceed to Japan with a 17 day advanced survival course in Nevada enroute. This completed, Helen and I arrived together in Japan as . I am missing a copy of orders at this time, but I wound up being assigned to the 421st Air Refueling Squadron, flying modified KB-50J (Bomber) tankers. Today (10/24/95), it seem that I had lucked out again. Helen and I purchased a Japanese house (no land) for $3500which gave us nice quarters. She had a Japanese maid and also completed a course in Chinese cooking, given by theBenedictine Sisters of Tokyo. She also enjoyed the many Japanese shops. Note that while Helen and I were based near Tokyo, David and Alvoris were based in northern Japan. In my work as aircraft commander, flight leader, instructor pilot and standardization pilot in a squadron of 6 engine KB-50J's, we would mostly rendezvous with and refuel single engine jets out over the Pacific Ocean. On the missions, we would occasionally operate out of Okinawa, Wake Island , or Bangkok. The KB-50J could carry a railroad tank car of fuel.

In late 1959, I had completed 20 years of active military service and was eligible for minimum retirement. There was a RIF (reduction in force) going on, and so against my wishes, I was sent to the states and retired the last day of 1959 at the ripe old age of 37.

In 1960, I entered training as an air traffic controller and worked as such, with on-the-job training for about a year. in early 1961, I resigned. Too much pressure and changing shifts.

In 1951, I had made a deal with Mom and Dad Cochran to buy the farm. In 1961, Helen and I paid off the remainder of the farm note, purchased 1/2 interest in Mom and Dad's cattle and moved to Wagoner, Wagoner, OK and took over the operation of "The Arrowhead
Ranch" , the farm's new name. In 1962, we built our ranch home on the ranch. We lived on, enjoyed, and improved the ranch and herd for the following 15 years. we especially enjoyed being near my folks, sharing their love and respect. Would that all families shared the love and respect for each other as we Cochran's do. On a lighter note, for Hellen and I, the Wagoner Dance Club and it's members were a joy.

The ranch consisted of 240 acres. The largest herd we ever wintered was 212 head. My fertilizer bill for one year was more that Dad had paid for the whole farm in 1938.

In 1964, in need of more spending money, I took on a permanent, part time job with the US Bureau of the Census and traveled over much of Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, and Arkansas. Sometimes, Helen would accompany me and other times she would go to east Texas and see her mama while I worked. In the 1970 census, I was the regional technician responsible for the census operation in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Jonesboro, Arkansas.

in 1966, I was appointed by the President of the United States as a member of the Wagoner, Wagoner, OK Local Board of the Selective Service System, serving during the difficult time of the Vietnam War. I served in this thankless, payless job through 1973, followed by service as a member of the Appeal Board, Selective Service, Muskogee, Oklahoma until mid-1977.

Helen and her older sister, Marjorie, have always been fairly close. Marj's husband, Kermit Johnson, was a General Motors executive (Comptroller) in the Frigidair Branch. He and Marj had helped Helen several times when I was overseas. They loved to visit us, later, on
the ranch. Once, I thought Kermit would "bust a gut" laughing when I was showing him the cattle and my big red Brahman bull stuck his head inside the pickup window to receive his "treat", a hand-held cube of feed.

I remember one evening after supper, the girls were in the kitchen and Kermit and I were relaxing in front of the fireplace, watching the flickering flames and listening to music. As I occasionally did when the music was especially beautiful, I turned out the lights, stretched
out on the floor, closed my eyes and let the beauty of the moment consume me. Then as the beautiful lady of accomplishment sang "But when I dream, I dream of you. Maybe someday it will come true." Kermit also relaxed on the floor, saying that he had never
taken the time to enjoy music so.

In late 1976, Kermit took his retirement. Although he was a Minnesota Swede and I was an Okie, we both developed a love for East Texas, where Marj and Helen were raised. So it was that the four of us, both couples being childless, decided to move to East Texas I didn't like giving up the ranch, but then Helen promised I could buy some land in East Texas. In 1977, we sold the ranch and had a big auction to dispose of the cattle and equipment. After the sale, I walked around the trailer to say good-bye to the head man of my herd, my red Brahman bull. He was my buddy, who, while keeping an intense eye on me, had allowed me, always using slow, steady movements, to touch and inspect him any and everywhere, except his ears! If I tried to inspect his ears, he would shake his head "NO!!!!!!!" As I said good-bye, he was so angry that he trembled. His fierce eyes clearly
said "You son-of-a-bitch, what have you done to me!!!!!!!!" I felt low as a skunk.

And there was my ranch companion and helper, Patty, our border collie cow dog. I could give her hand signals two blocks away and she would quickly obey, like the sheep dog that she was. She was to stay with the ranch. When we left the ranch, I simply gave her the hand signal and told her to "stay"> She sat down, smiled, and said "OK" with her tail, just knowing we would be back soon. When we did get back to the area a couple of months later, I decided to go check on Patty............Big mistake!!!!!!I parked a bit away from the house. As I walked toward the house, she barked. I called "Patty?" Hesitantly and
questioningly, she took a few steps toward me, then stop, and then a few more steps. "Patty. it's me!". She was stressed and thin, with matter in her eyes. I held her, caressed her and she licked the back of my hand. This has got to stop. I can't take her! I stood up, gave her the hand signal and said "Stay". As I took a few backwards steps, she did not stay. Again, this time with both hands....."STAY!" Grieving, she slumped to the ground and buried her face under her front paws I cried! ( So did I as I typed this......Basil)

After we had settled in near the girls home town of Garrison, Texas, it didn't take long for me to discover that I needed something more useful, productive, and satisfying to "do". The four of us had great fun attending the races at Louisiana Downs on a regular basis during the season. I also piddled around the country home we had purchased, but the land was timberland and required little work. So it was that in 1979, I found an old Dutch colonial two story house in Garrison, bought it and started a remodeling job that was to last 4 years. (I couldn't find any place to quit!) I was always hoping that Helen would fall in love with it and we would move in.........Not to be. Anyway, it was a labor of love and I learned a lot. I just barely recouped my out-of-pocked expenses when we sold it to a young couple with three kids. Ahh, life!

In 1985, we purchased a nice home in Garrison and moved in. Much handier for us old folks. Marj and Kermit were living in Nacogdoches, about 25 miles away. But, Helen and I decided to stay in Garrison to keep an eye on her older and somewhat handicapped bachelor brother, Clayborn, who lives in his own home.

Sadness also in 1985 when we lost Kermit. He was a heavy smoker while he was in his high pressure job at GM. He quit, somewhat cold turkey, on doctor's warning, soon after he retired. It was too late though as lung cancer developed and spread. Cigarettes got 'im. I admired him very much and respected his knowledge. I miss him. For the last ten years, up to today's date, 21 November1995, things are more retiring with seemingly fewer things of interest recorded in my computer of a mind, mainly because my "recorder" functions less efficiently with the passing of time. In retirement, Helen and I are
as busy as we like. Our health remains relatively good, although somewhat guarded in some areas. We hop in the car and visit Shreveport and Barksdale AFB, Tyler or Longview regularly a couple of times a month to shop, eat out, and just get away. The nicest thing of all is the annual trip to Jack and Jane's for the family reunion, white elephant swap and belly stuffing.

I love gardening and landscaping, concentrating on "Can you eat it?" We burn wood in the insert in our fireplace for supplementary winter heat and to enjoy The flickering flames. Our source of wood is scrap from a local railroad crosstie manufacturing company. My major hobby is the culture of pecan trees in a home yard setting, requiring very little or no spraying and producing nice size, easy cracking, delicious pecan kernels fairly regularly. During the recent years, Helen and I have benefited from like efforts of my counterpart
from the previous generation from just 3 pecan trees that were planted, grafted and developed probably 40 years ago by a Mr. Kelly, a sawmill operator from Louisiana. I now have about 75 pecan trees scattered in and around Garrison, in church lots, medical clinicgrounds, Lion's Club, undeveloped city streets, back yards etc in various stages of development that I work with. I've been called "Johnny Appleseed" a couple of times. It is so satisfying when they do well. Disease resistance ils of most importance but by no means permanent, given the ability of pathogens, funguses, viruses, etc to mutate and overcome resistance. I hope future generations of Cochran's will benefit from these efforts as we do now from Mr. Kelly's love.

Philosophy-wise, I am conservative, more (but not all) Republican than Democrat, secular, and advocate individual responsibility in all things that you touch or are involved with, including the responsibility of both the sire and the mother of all children for their care, support, and development. I fear that this planet and it's inhabitants are now suffering from over production of the human animal, their requirements and selfishness, and that people must take steps to control and limit world human population, lest man go the way of ...?) I
am, however, as the 7th child and Helen the 11th,very thankful to have been allowed in this world and feel responsible for it and future generations. And yes, I recycle everything that is recyclable, down to and including the little cardboard spool that the toilet paper comes on. Down the road a generation or so, a kid may ask "Daddy, what was toilet paper?"

And love-wise, you are, and will always be, the object of my affection.
