Building and Grounds Minutes
August 14, 2012
Roger Sellers opened the meeting with a prayer at 7:00 p.m. Committee
members present were: Jerry Grandle, Janet Loman, Roger Sellers, Eddie
Armendariz, Dennis Thomas and Bruce Pearson. Pastor Norm Story was also
briefly present at the start of our meeting.
Old
Business
The
committee finalized the draft of recommended policies regarding use of the
handicap-equipped van. Jerry will present the recommendations in this paper
to the Session this month.
In
response to a previous request from a member of our congregation, Jerry
advised that we have now designated two more handicapped parking spaces, in
the lot just south of Jones Hall. Marc Ortiz has already painted these
spaces. In addition, we decided to allocate six more handicapped parking
spaces on the south side. All eight of these spaces will be reserved for the
handicapped for Sunday services only.
Jerry and Janet advised that we have ordered the new carpet from Malooly's
Flooring for the two-room fellowship area of Jones Hall. Funding for the
carpeting came from the Renovation Phase I funds. The carpet will arrive in
five to six weeks.
At
our June meeting, we had discussed the request from Christian Education for
the walls of two rooms in Branigan to be repainted. Marc Ortiz has already
begun preparing the walls for painting. (We will not be repainting the
ceilings or cabinets in
Branigan, just the walls). Kristine Lambert, Salt and Light Coordinator, was
present for this discussion to request some clarification about this
project, specifically, whether the teachers for Salt and Light could put
anything on the walls prior to the painting. We told her that they could
not. Our deadline to complete this job is September 1, so that the rooms
will be repainted before Salt and Light begins. Dennis said he will begin
the job on August 17. He will use Dover white, semigloss, washable paint,
which will cost about $360.
New
Business
Jerry said that in order to prevent stains on the new carpet from the sink
and coffee table areas, he plans to lay new tile from the edge of these
utility areas to the edge of the new carpet. Bruce offered to help him.
Also
regarding the fellowship rooms in Jones, we plan to repaint the walls (with
a satin finish) and install three new countertops in the sink and coffee
table areas. We will have to complete this work prior to the installation of
the new carpet.
We
also discussed the possibility of installing new cabinets in the fellowship
rooms. Several boxes are stored in plain sight on top of the small cabinets
currently in use. This visible storage detracts from the overall appearance
of the area.
Janet reported that a chair in the ladies' restroom in Watkins Hall needs
reupholstering. Juanita Treat had originally brought this to Janet's
attention. Janet will discuss this matter further with Juanita to identify a
suitable upholsterer. The new upholstery should be washable.
We
discussed the request of a local car club to hold a car show some Saturday
in our parking lot. The purpose of the show would be to collect canned food
for the needy. Initially, a couple of us were in favor of granting
permission, because the event would be for a worthy cause and might have
some community outreach benefits for our church. Upon further discussion,
however, we ultimately decided that there were too many potential problems,
e.g., public access to our bathrooms, liability and safety issues, trash,
etc. We therefore unanimously voted not to approve the request.
At
our next meeting, on September 11, we will formulate the handyman job
description.
Bruce adjourned the meeting with a prayer at 8:10 p.m..
Respectfully submitted by Bruce Pearson
