Building and Grounds Minutes

December 10, 2013

Roger Sellers opened the meeting at 6:55 p.m. with prayer.   Members present in addition to Roger were Janet Loman, Bill Haynes, Ed Green, Steve Johnson and Bruce Pearson.

 ACTION ITEMS FOR SESSION:  None.

 Old Business

Janet was pleased to report that the Church Mutual Insurance Company has agreed to pay the church $14,070, as settlement for the arson damage to the playground.   While welcome, this sum will not be enough to pay for all our proposed renovations.  Therefore, Chris Lehman is investigating the possibilities of obtaining a grant from a non-profit organization to help to cover the additional costs.    Mr. Lehman, who now attends our church, was formerly the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Albuquerque and has experience in writing grant proposals.  We expect to know the results of his efforts by December 20.

Also pertaining to the playground renovation, the Singletree firm has already begun cleaning up the playground.   We discussed several types of new playground equipment we are considering for the playground.   Bill Haynes volunteered to find out which local company might be able to powdercoat the equipment.  We have not yet located a stump grinder so we can completely remove the dead tree from the playground.

We decided to postpone our planned workday on December 12 to paint Watkins Hall.   It turned out that the frequent use of Watkins during the holidays would have prevented us from doing the job.   Moreover, we do not yet have all the sound-deadening materials we wish to install.   Therefore, we agreed to paint Watkins sometime in late spring, after we have all the necessary materials on hand.

The seals on the heat pump which provides heating for our sanctuary are leaking.  A total failure would leave us without any heat at all, which would obviously be unacceptable, especially during this Christmas season.   Janet contacted two local heating companies for assistance, but both proved to be unavailable.   After some discussion, Steve Johnson said he believed he could obtain the necessary parts in El Paso and could then repair the pump seals himself.   Ed will assist him.

 New Business

Janet announced that although her term as an elder will expire this month, she wishes to remain on B & G as an at-large member.  Bruce's term as a deacon also expires this month.  Although he will no longer be attending the B&G meetings, he has agreed to continue participating in work days when in town.

             We adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by Bruce Pearson
