Buildings
& Grounds Committee
Meeting
Minutes from May 13, 2014
Received a report from Carl
Connor (in person) with the latest on the Columbarium Committee’s work on
the design for the cover over the Columbarium area. It was decided to
finalize the design with the following action items:
Steve Johnson will meet
with Carl Connor on Sunday to locate Sanctuary blueline drawings and discuss
drawings needed for approval.
Those present discussed the
recent break-in and advanced multiple ideas to improve security of the
facility.
We discussed those line
items we were not able to accomplish on the April 26th Work Day.
The two main items were the cleaning of the gutters and acid washing the
bricks. These could not be started due to the windy conditions and
will be continued as weather allows.
Attachment methods were
discussed on the recently purchased playground dome. We will probably
sink rebar beside the structure and weld loops at the top to facilitate
attachment. We decided not to sink concrete piers due to the potential
of injury if they became uncovered. These “spikes” can be pre-made and
inserted on installation without the need to wait for concrete curing, right
alongside the structure poles. This should greatly speed up the
installation. Carl Connor has agreed to help with this and we believe
the students may be persuaded to help with the dome construction.
Dennis has still been
unable to find any vendor who will look at the floor and give us a diagnosis
and then an estimate for repair. We hesitate to go ahead with retiling
without having an idea of what caused the buckling to start with. We
worry that we could finish and have the same thing happen all over again.
We all agreed that we must have a professional opinion before continuing.
The finished door continues
to sit in the choir room waiting for installation. Jerry Grandle has
been too busy to allow completion.
We still struggle with
continuity on watering and the suggestion was made that perhaps we need to
find a new landscape person to handle the job.
Several of the committee
have looked at the stucco three-bay garage and determined that the surface
is severely cracked and that the substrate is also loose. A simple
sealing and painting would not suffice to repair the building. We will
attempt to get a stucco vendor estimate for repairs.
We will order new seals for
the refrigerator that should help dramatically. We question putting
more money into the freezer after all the monies spent last year. It
may be time to invest in a new, more energy-efficient model. Will
check on an offer to provide a similar model at roughly ˝ the price
previously considered.
During the Work Day we
found a large Shop-Vac in the garage that seemed to be missing important
parts. This unit would have come in handy for the work we were doing
around site. Steve Johnson will look for the parts, and if not found,
re-order as necessary from Sears.
The cabinet that was
removed from Vanessa’s area will be remounted in the side room as time
allows. Linda and Vanessa have agreed on its location to the left of
the door as one enters the room. We still need to locate the missing
door that got ripped off during the original damage.
We have added several items
to our Master Work Day Roster. Steve Johnson will separate the list
into those items that may be one-shot installations and those that are
continuing maintenance tasks (those that will need to be done forever or as
long as birds continue…well, you know.)
