August 14, 2012 6:30 PM – Jones Hall

Committee Members:

Present: Corina Armendariz, Kristine Lambert, Anna Suggs, Martha Mitchell, Mark Hellman, David Medina

Absent: Brian Griffith

Opening devotion (5 minutes) – Martha opened with meditation from Daily Hope by Rick Warren: “Only God’s approval matters”

Guest: Samantha Armendariz, action item results

· Divide children in Sunday school hour: birth-3, Judi and Samantha, 4-5’s: teacher and Isabel

· Invite child care providers to participate in CE meetings if they wish

· VBS-provide curricular materials for nursery age children

· Prepare allergy and registration forms in English and Spanish for Sunday school hour (Corina volunteered)

Review and approval of last meeting minutes-minutes approved as read

Written Reports

VBS

· Discussed pie fundraiser, Kristine will write up article for Good News.

Salt and Light:

· Salt and Light starts Sept. 12, 2012

· Kristine will set up a registration table for after fellowship August 19, 26

· Discussed tablecloth purple material. Decided to purchase ready-made purple tablecloths that Kristine has found in a heavier weight polyester

· Discussed designs for Salt and Light t-shirts. Final decision and ordering left to Kristine

· Postcards for VBS children inviting them to Salt and Light went out yesterday

· Move to Branigan needed for beginning of Salt and Light. Request work day for church Sept 8, 2012 to move furniture out of 211 to make it ready to be an elementary classroom

Youth

· Report on Mission trips

· Confirmation class will be held Sept 16-Nov 8

· Oct 26-27 lockin (6^th grade and above)

Verbal Reports (5 minutes)

Pre-K and Elementary.

· Purchased new Bibleman DVDs and one more VeggieTales

· Best day for move-up Sunday: week after VBS

Adult- Ann Velia not teaching class in the fall, Richard Paul has agreed to teach a class on Galations

Old Business (15 minutes)–

· Branigan use:

· Budget review

o College intern budget, cost: $3,300 in budget, meant to last for whole year (intern traditionally worked only during Salt and Light weeks). Have exhausted budget. Shannon to work 10 hrs/week this semester. Approximate cost: $1,500. Martha will request that the funds be transferred from the general budget funds for first the mid-school mission trips ($1,100) and then the high school mission trips ($400)

New Business (15 minutes)

· Bibles

o Sept 9^th is Bible Sunday

o 10 3^rd grade bibles and 10 6^th grade bibles ordered

o 100 new book plates ordered from Instacopy and given to Judith

o Confirmed list of recipients. Martha will give to Judith. Ordered 5 more of each to make sure we have enough

· Advent booklets

o Selected family and individual booklets. Martha will talk to Linda about how many to order (last year had too many)

o Martha needs to get address labels to put on the booklets with church name, address, phone number and website

· Safe Sanctuaries training: August 27, 2012, 6:00 p.m., Cinema

· Educational Opportunities page on website needs to be updated

o Assignments made as to content: Mark, youth; Kristy, Salt & Light and VBS; Martha, Sunday School

· CE ministry team responsibilities-discussed list. Draft list attached to minutes below

Items for Session:

Sept 1, 2012: White Sands New Moon night for mid and high school (vans, off campus)

Sept 8, 2012: Request work day starting at 9:00 a.m. to clean cabinets, move furniture, move computers in preparation for Salt and Light.

Christian Education Ministry

Areas of responsibility include:

• Establish objectives, set policies for and supervise the total education program
• Oversee Sunday School programs for children, youth, and adults (including Sunday School hour and second hour during the worship service for children)
• Oversee designated and General Fund budget for CE and Salt&Light
• Oversee Youth programs
• Oversee nursery care by paid employees and volunteers (including services on Saturday and Sunday)
• Oversee CE intern
• Oversee the church library
• Provide Vacation Bible School
• Provide Wednesday night program, Salt & Light
• Coordinate gifts of bibles from the congregation to 3^rd and 6^th graders
• Provide confirmation classes
• Participate in the selection of special devotional materials provided to the congregation for Advent and Easter
• Encourage increasing participation in Bible study in formal, informal, and private settings
• Select and purchase educational materials, supplies, and curriculum
• Recruit, train, sustain, and encourage teachers
• Offer training specifically in maintaining a safe church environment (currently Safe Sanctuaries)
