Rev. Wayne Hawkins
Wayne Hawkins, Director of our Hispanic New Church Development project, was born in California in 1939 and grew up in Fresno, California and southern Mexico where his father established a school and orphanage in the 1940’s. Educated in Fresno and in Mexico, Wayne became a bilingual and bicultural person at an early age, an advantage that has served him in a variety of occupational experiences.
In 1968, he accepted a call as Youth Director in a Presbyterian Church, started seminary (Fuller Theological Seminary, M.Div. 1975) and was then ordained. His doctoral work was done at San Francisco Theological Seminary where his doctoral dissertation was based on his Hispanic New Church Development project in Central Washington Presbytery.
His last eleven years of church ministry was in Southern California where he pastored and worked with the Inglewood Unified School District as a developer of programs and services for the Hispanic community which had grown to over 60% of the population there. He retired at the beginning of 2005 and moved to Las Cruces to begin the process of our Hispanic New Church Development here.
