MISSION MINISTRY TEAM MINUTES
May 13, 2008
Present: Moderator Tommy Matkin, Dutch Matkin, Alex Burr, Bob Taylor, Robert McPherson, Rosemary Maddox, and Bruce Pearson
Tommy opened the meeting with prayer at 7:08 p.m.
1. Approval of the Minutes. There were two corrections to the minutes of April 8: (1) Missionaries Tom and Judy Harvey are in Singapore, not in Hong Kong; and (2) the mission trip Matt Holt is organizing for May 26-30 to build a house in Juarez is not limited to youth. Matt says anyone who wants to come and help is welcome. The minutes were approved as corrected.
2. Correspondence. Dutch read an email from Kim Lytton to her mother, Beverly Briggs, describing in detail their experiences during the recent earthquake in China and assuring her that they were unhurt. Bruce noted that the Lyttons may visit us in June.
A request was received from ARTA, founded by the late Charles Diebond, asking for a donation for technology assistance with farming in high altitudes in Mexico. This request will be considered at a later date.
3. Beyond Our Walls/Lantern. Alex and Bob discussed possible changes in the format now being used to report on missionary activities. As a result of this discussion Alex will print Bob's June article integrated into the Lantern, with appropriate title, rather than two separate pages with a header. Alex will print the July article in the usual "Beyond Our Walls" format, then the decision will be made as to which format should be used in the future.
4. The Pontiers, missionaries stationed in Uganda, will visit us on July 20. We will help them with travel and lodging expenses.
5. Our next special offering will be the Peace Keeping offering in August. Tommy will ask Kathy to order the materials needed for this project.
6. Rosemary handed out information about Tom and Judy Harvey's move at the end of this month to the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies in Oxford, England, and their financial information sheet. This information will be considered at our budget work session in October.
7. Bruce discussed a project planned for Vacation Bible School to purchase 5-gallon plastic water bottles, to be delivered to Casas por Cristo for use in areas of Juarez where clean water is not available. He said that young people from the church are going from apartment to apartment in the area inviting children to attend VBS and thereby doing missionary duties, and he asked that a donation to this project be considered. After general discussion it was MOVED by Bruce Pearson, SECONDED by Robert McPherson, and APPROVED by those present,
THAT we donate $200.00 to the missionary activities of Vacation Bible School.
8. Adjournment. The meeting was closed with prayer by Bruce at 8:10 p.m.
