Presidents Christmas Page
By the time this newsletter arrives at your home it will be Christmas. From the Officers and the Board of Directors, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
Our goal starting February 2002 was to maintain the size of the membership and make changes that improve the quality of the activities for the members. Today, we have about 300 members. Most live in New Mexico and Texas, but we also have members that live in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Washington. The Club has held Casting Clinics, monthly meeting with knowledgeable speakers, and other events such as the Kids Fishing Day. The Club sponsored two organized trips. This year, we went to the White Mountain Apache Reservation and to the San Juan River. In addition, we have had a lease with Mr. Jim Ellett of the J.B. Runyan Ranch to fish the Rio Peasco for the past two years. We created a Website (www.MVFF.org), and we streamlined the newsletter mailing process. All in all, we are pleased with the goals that were achieved in 2002.
There is a lot of effort behind the scene that goes into the running the Club. To begin with, I would like to thank all MVFF members for simply maintaining your membership. Thanks to those that responded when we needed special help to "jump start" certain projects. The initial work to get the lease started two years ago, for example, wouldnt have been successful without your support. We have had a number of work and community projects where volunteers made the difference. Thank you for your willingness to take time from your schedule to help. A "big" thanks to the 2002 Officers - Jim Hulsey last years Vice President and the next President; Al Trompler, Treasurer; Jeff Arterburn, Secretary and News Letter editor; Bob Pridgen, Board member and Membership chairman; and Board Members Wade Hedgecoke, Al Turner, and Ron Smorynski. Finally, thank you to Board Member Emeritus Norm Mabie who keeps us headed in the right direction. These are the people that did the "heavy" lifting to keep things running smoothly.
I came across the following short article titled "Seven Wonders" in the December 2002 issue of the Federation of Fly Fisher's ClubWire News Service. It has nothing to do with fly fishing and everything to do with fly fishing. Sometimes, we need to be reminded about the truly important things in life. Since this is my last newsletter as President, I thought I would share this with you as a way of saying thanks for the help given to me this year. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
With best regards
Bob Silver
SEVEN WONDERS
A group of students was asked to list what they thought were the Seven Wonders of the
World. Though there was some disagreement, the following got the most votes:
1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
2. Taj Mahal
3. Grand Canyon
4. Panama Canal
5. Empire State Building
6. St. Peter's Basilica
7. China's Great Wall
While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one quiet student hadn't turned in her
paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl
replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so
many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have and maybe we can
help." The girl hesitated, then read,
"I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:
1. To touch
2. To taste
3. To see
4. To hear
She hesitated a little, then added:
5. To feel
6. To laugh.
7. And to love.
The room was so full of silence you could have heard a pin drop
