GENERATIONS
deals with Batman and Superman in real-time: They were introduced in 1939
and age accordingly over the next century. Instead of Bruce Wayne continuously
being Batman, he ages, and the mantle is passed on to others. Superman
has to deal with a similar situation, for even if he doesn't age as a human
does, Clark Kent has to. The best feature of the book is following these
two heroes throughout the 20th century, and seeing their secret identities
play an ever-greater role in shaping their lives. They begin to behave
more like normal people. |
John Byrne was
able to cover a staggering amount of material in this volume, pulling it
off very smoothly. Also, the story is loaded with Golden/Silver-Age references,
and each decade manages to capture the atmosphere of what comics were like
at that time.

Fans of Batgirl
will enjoy this tale since it is she who leads the Bat-family in
this reality, a world inhabited by alternitive versions of many strangely
familiar Batman heroes and villans.
This is a superb reworking
of the myth of the Dark Knight. Starting not with Bruce Wayne
but with Dick (Robin) Grayson and Barbara (Batgirl)
Gordon,
the story offers readers a new and thought-provoking version of Batman's
origins, as well as the origins of some of the major villians. The story
pumps along at a high adrenalin rate, and the moody artwork adds tremendously
to the whole story.Highly recommended. |
