PASTOR'S REPORT

You hold an Annual Report in your hand that reflects part of what we know about our life together in Christ's service at First Presbyterian Church. Of course, there is much we don't know about this congregation's life because it is a mix of the human and the divine. There are wonderful things that have happened in the human realm that didn't make it into the report because of the human tendency to forget or not notice. Or, perhaps it was a very personal thing that happened, helpful or harmful, that a person would just as soon go unreported to a large group. Then the Divine: there is much reported and unreported that fails to be apprehended and appreciated in our life. God's mysterious ways often remain mystery... even things that we think we understand completely. God also works secretly and in small things that only later become noticeable. Then, we wonder, 'How did that begin? Who started this? Whom shall we thank for that?"
Recognizing these limitations, inherent in any report, it is still essential to lift up and celebrate what we do know! Looking at the past year, it is still important to give thanks in the present one! Reflecting on what God and we have done together, it is still crucial to look ahead to what we may learn of God's desire for our life arid service in years to come.
We have an important group of knowns and unknowns in this present day in respect to one concern: the condition of our buildings, particularly the roofs. Proper correction of the problems discovered is not something we can postpone. Combined with other physical plant needs that would be prudent to address at the same time, your Session must come to the congregation with information and the formative plan to solve those problems. This will begin soon. We solicit your careful attention!
Of course, such a need and such remedies will require money. A capital funds campaign will be required of us to preserve and improve our present facilities. It is very important that we not just engage in maintenance, though. We need to renovate and repair for the future, not just to replicate the past.
What this, then, requires, is to engage in a time of prayerful discernment of not just our obvious needs, but of God's desire for our service. What does God want us to do? What form will that take in our ongoing life and programs. How will we be most useful in God's purposes for this area?
When we seek God's direction to shape our life together, then repairs and improvements, architectural plans, financial concerns and fund campaigns take their proper place in serving that life.
To begin to provide for such a period of discernment, I want to suggest that each one of us begin in his or her personal devotions to pray daily, beginning now, for God's direction for us all. We can gather at the service on Ash Wednesday, when the theme is repentance, for what l hope will be a series of public prayer times. I will be in conversation with our Worship Committee and Session to plan times and places of gathering for prayer through the ensuing six weeks of Lent.
We are a favored people of God. We have more resources and gifts than we have yet discovered within us because of God's mercy, power and presence. As you read the pages of this report, please keep praying: "Thank vou, Lord! What next? What shall I do? How?

DIRECTOR OF YOUTH MINISTRIES

One can only stand in awe as they are given the privilege of watching God work His incredible wonders in youth. Since joining the staff in September, 2000, I have had the opportunity to watch God at work in the lives in our youth through our retreats, Salt & Light, and youth fellowship events. He has blessed us with an awesome team of sponsors and an incredibly supportive congregation that are helping build a healthy Youth Ministry program that will build real, lifelong faith into the youth.

This year began with an active fall full of youth fellowship events where youth participated in everything from bowling to murder (a game the Sr. High likes to play). This fall the Sr. High went on a retreat to Sacramento Assembly while the Mid-School held a church lock-in. Both events were successful in that as they had fun together they helped build community within each group.

In Salt & Light this year we have started to experience some significant growth in a number of areas. First, our numbers have grown as we have attracted some new students while several youth have become active again. The Mid-School group runs consistently around nine, while the Sr. High usually runs around eleven students. The attendance of these youth has become very regular each week! Second, I believe each group has started to build a stronger sense of community and they have started to build strong relationships with each other. Third, and most importantly, the youth have grown spiritually. One of the main goals for our youth ministry is for each individual to focus on developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Our Youth have begun to take the necessary steps to become strong Christians and future leaders in the Church and the community.

Already this year we have started to plan for the future of our groups. The sponsors and I will be working to design a purpose and vision for our youth groups. We hope that these meetings will help us make our program a strong, healthy, growing one that will effectively reach our youth and other youth in our community for Jesus Christ.

I would like to give a special thanks to the Barry and Tammy Prahl, Joel and Patricia Tomlin, Howard and Linda Daniels, Matt and Betsy Holt, Martha Mitchell, Randy Farmer and Art Garcia as well as the many parents and youth who continue to give time, energy, and talents to our program.

DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION REPORT

Looking back over 2000, it is good to see that the work in Christian education in our congregation continues to provide multiple opportunities for spiritual growth and training in discipleship for Jesus Christ. There have been classes for all ages with excellent teaching and leadership provided by many people in our church.

For the children in Sunday School and the Salt & Light Co., active, integrated learning using all of the learning styles continued in our Disciples' Avenue. In the Cinema, Temple, Art Gallery, Puppet Theatre, and Cafe', the stories of the prophets - Jonah, Elijah, Elisha, and others-came alive. We ended up with Esther during Lent and the kids put on a frin play about this exciting story. In late spring, we learned about Paul and his missionary activity, ending with Amy Poling telling about her mission work in Malawi. After a few weeks studying Joshua and Jericho last winter in Salt & Light, the planning team (Joyce Gemoets, Jacque Parks, Margie Rankin and myself) developed workshops to teach Belonging to God: A first Catechism from the New Study Catechism for the PC(USA). Then Beverly Briggs once again taught our "traditional" class on 'worship" to thc fifth graders.

The summer was busy starting with a week of Vacation Bible School using Journey with Joshua - an exciting learning experience that continued in our Sunday School classes during June and August. Then, new workshops were created on Disciples' Avenue: the Game Zone and Commuriity Center (which includes the Puppet Theatre and Library/Quiet Comer) and the Temple was remodeled. This fall we used the new denominational curriculum, Covenant People, to design our worshops for Sundays and thoroughly covered the stories and promises of God through Abraham, Sarah, Issac Rebecca and their families. On Wednesdays, the workshops centered around Kids Can Explore the Bible which taught the kids an overview of God's plan for salvation and looked carefdlly at the eight eras of Bible history by studying the people and events of that time. We also opened the COMPUTER LAB! Donations of equipment, time, energy, and "know how" have made this dream a reality and the first round of classes using the Lab were a real success. These kids get smarter and smarter!

Throughout the year there have been a variety of classes and studies for the youth in mid- school and senior high. These were planned and taught by Sue Spencer and Dan Yetter and the very-committed sponsors, Tammy and Barry Prahl, Linda and Howard Daniels, Matt and Betsy Holt, Randy Farmer, and Martha Mitchell. In the spring John Poling taught the senior highs on Wednesday nights using the Can We Talk? Conversations for Faith from the New Study Catechism for the PC(USA). He also taught a confirmation class for sixth graders during the spring.

Adult education classes continued to cover a variety of interesting video courses: What is Reformed Theology?, Jesus' Reserrection: Then and Now,Between Two Altars, and Great Men and Women of the Bible all taught by Marsha Topley and aided by various othcrs. There were classes in the summer exploring some of our mission sites and efforts around the world. Dick Dale continued to lead a Bible study, first studying Romans and thcn Exodus which is continuing in this new year. David Sallee, our Director of College

Ministry, and his wife, Nancy, taught a Sunday morning class for young adults titled The Big Picture. Last spring the Rev. Al Kissling taught another semester of Kerygina: the Bible in Depth.

Once again during the past year, the music program for our children and youth in the Salt & Light Co. continued to be an area of vital ministry and education. They worked on musicals, choral readings and songs, and other forms of worship leadership including chancel drama, hand signing, handbells, and instrumental accompaniment. A highlight of the year was the Pentecost Celebration in June with Harry Beckett and other professional musicians as we studied and learned new music he wrote for the American Bible Society. Also, the children's Christmas musical, Hark the Angel Sang Off-Key, was a smashing success. Besides several blended/contemporary services during the year led by the youth and our version of a "praise band", there were two services on December 24th that included youth and children's choirs, handbells, college students, and flautists along with the Chancel Choir. The youth choir and band also led the music and worship at the meeting of Sierra Blanca Presbytery at Camp Chimney Spring last Aprl. All of these events have provided opportunities for studying scripture and theology as well as being a chance to witness to our faith. There are many people to thank, but most especially Art Garcia and Laurie Norman for countless hours of "extra" rehearsals!

Undergirded by prayer and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, the educational ministry of our church continues to be a vibrant source of inspiration and spiritual growth for individuals and our corporate life. The dedication and faithfulness of many, many people make these educational programs possible again and again. We have good plans for 2001 - including possibilities for youth and adults to experience the exciting biblical learning that can take place using our new Computer Lab! You are invited to come to the various classes, worship services, and intergenerational events! We promise they will deepen your faith, liff up your prayer life, build the foundation of your theology, and aide others in their own faith journeys as you share with us.

I’d like to say a special WELCOME to our new President, Wendy Sattler (from ABQ) who has been active in our program for more than 4 years, a special THANKS to Chris Nail (ABQ), past president for a job well done, who is continuing on as Treasurer, WELCOME to our new Compeer Coordinator, Adrianne Creasman who has been a Social Work Intern with us for a year, a special THANKS to Carey Rhodes, who left the coordinator position to pursue her MBA in N. California in November, and a BIG THANKS to Shacoy Baker (OK), our new Secretary and Campus Ministry Intern who has been calling our students & updating our data base this semester. Compeer - NMSU: "Making a Difference - One Child at a Time. . ."Thanks to the Associated Students @NMSU, the Basilian Fathers, Christian Counseling Services, and Olympia, Three active Bridge Participants; Eric Banagay, Patrick Banegas, and Adrianne Creasman were able to hear Rosalyn Carter and other international speakers in Atlanta in October. The Student Chapter is a student directed organization providing one-to-one friendship and mentoring to at-risk and emotionally disturbed children and adolescents (Compeer Friends). Student volunteers commit to spending at least four hours per month for at least two semesters with their Compeer Friend. Christians in Social Work – nmsu After much controversy for the Social Work Department - NMSU, the Christians in Social Work-NMSU is now a chartered student organization recognized by NMSU and the North American Association of Christians in Social Work (NAACSW). Our student group is led by Sarah Reay, President, (Sareay@nmsu.edu, phone 645-679) and is committed to assisting and challenging its members to grow in their ability to actively integrate their Christian faith and social work practice toward the end of better serving those in need.  COMMITTEES

Benevolence & Concern - In conjunction with the church office staff, determines the amount of financial assistance to give to people in need of help; issues gas vouchers to needy people.

Soup Kitchen - Acts as liaison with El Caldito. Oversees our church soup kitchen teams.

Home-bound Visitation - In conjunction with the church office staff, identifies those church members who are home-bound; coordinates church volunteers who periodically contact or visit these shut-ins; arranges for delivery of Easter lilies and poinsettias to shut-ins, and sends birthday cards.

Hospital Visitation - Visits members of the church who are in the hospital and delivers flowers. It is financially beneficial to purchase flowers in the hospital gift shop.

Guest Visitation - Coordinates with the Evangelism Committee on the needs for Deacon involvement in visitation of visitors; sends current copy of Lantern to new visitors.

Ushering - Schedules team captains and ushers for worship services and funerals; revises, as necessary, instructions for same.

Greeting - Contacts congregational members to greet at each door prior to worship; provides a name tag for greeters, if necessary; notifies church secretary of the greeters so they will be listed in the Bulletin.

Transportation - Arranges for transportation, via the church van, for people who are unable to get to church. The main pick-up point is Good Samaritan Village; some people are picked up at Golden Mesa, and at their homes.

Transient Meals - Puts together lunch sacks for transients that stop at the church. Lets the office know when supplies are low.

Tape Duplicating - Makes tape duplicates of the church service (original tape is furnished by the sound technician).

Agape Caregivers - Purchases bereavement books and pamphlets, as necessary, and distributes them to the racks in the Sanctuary and Jones Hall. Makes sure that out-dated material is removed from the racks. Available to call on the bereaved.

Special Events - All Deacons are members of this committee. The events are the Retreat at Camp Chimney Spring in the summer, the annual Deacons' Hamburger Fry (our main fund-raising event), and the Christmas Outreach Program.

ANNUAL EVENTS

The Camp Chimney Spring: The retreat was well attended and enjoyed by all; Pastor Poling led the Sunday service.

Hamburger Fry: Rain the night before the event! The quadrangle was too soggy to set up tables so we ate inside (however, our cooks braved the weather and barbequed the burgers!

Deacons' Christmas Outreach: As always, it was a wonderful success. We brought much joy to seven families under Hospice care. Thanks to the congregation and your generosity.

Session Committee: ADMINISTRATION

                               The Administration Committee is comprised of Jim Parks, Matt Holt, Bobby Rankin, Lyn
         Ames, Robert McPherson and Mel Parish. As the name implies, the committee is
         responsible for many of the routine administrative activities of the church. Through
         previous policies in place the staff is empowered, pursuant to Session approved protocols,
         to respond quickly to requests for the use of church facilities. This is more responsive and
         lessens the work performed by the Administration Committee.
         
         l~he Administration Committee continued the upgrading and expanding of the computer
         system for the church staff. The purpose is to ease the burden on the staff while at the
         same time making them more responsive to the needs of the members. The
         Administration Committee also recommended a restructuring of the Foundation Board
         and that recommendation was approved by Session. An extremely successful
         Stewardship Committee was formed as a sub-committee this year. A report on it follows.
         
         Through community outreach the church facilities are used for a wide variety of
         purposes. Some groups meet on a regular basis including:
         
         ?  Women's Bible Study Fellowship
            - An interdenominational
            woman's Group which met
            weekly thru the spring of 2000;
            Girl Scouts - A girl scout troop
            under the leadership of Susan
            Grandle and Cheryl Ray;
         ?  Los Colcheras - a quilt circle
            which meets weekly;
         ?  The National Alliance for the
            Mentally Ill - a support and
            education group which meets
            several times monthly; and,
         
         additionally, the facilities are used on an "as needed" basis by a number of other people
         and groups:
         
         •  The American Guild of Organists
            uses the facilities for meetings
            and concerts;
         •  The Las Cruces Public Schools
            uses the church facilities for
            teacher workshops and
            conferences;
         •  Regular piano recitals are held at
            the church;
         •  The Farm House Fraternity held
            its annual banquet in Jones Hall;
         •  Music students at New Mexico
            State University use our organ
            for practice and for part of their
            class.
         
	The policy of the Session as carried out by the Administration Committee is to allow use
         of the church1s facilities as part of the church's outreach program when it does not
         interfere with scheduled church activities and where there are not additional costs
         incurred by the church.

Session Committee: STEWARDSHIP

The 2000 Stewardship Committee included: Bobbie Rankin, Chair, Margie Rankin, secretary, Gary Gemoets, Mel Parish, Jim Parks, Robert McPherson, Stan Smith, Beverly Briggs and John Poling, ex-officio. The goal of the committee was to get all active members and supporters to pledge a percentage of their income to the church, with the expectation that total income to the church would increase.

Objectives of the campaign were:

1. Education of members and friends of all ages regarding

a. Christ's teachings with regard to handling our money

b. How we are spending our current budget and our needs for 2001

2. Greater commitment by our congregation to giving time, talent and money to the glory of God.

Guiding principles of the campaign were:

1. Proportional giving, relative to income

2. Regular giving, weekly or monthly, as a part of worship and

3. Priority giving, putting aside God's share first

The committee met approximately six times for planning and execution of the campaign. Church staff including Jackie Poling, Kathy Tucker, Linda Ramirez and Betsy Holt were very helpful in getting things done.

Highlights of the campaign included:

The response to the campaign was encouraging. By December 19, 143 pledges had been received for a total of $297,376.00. This represented a significant increase in both numbers and amount compared to 1999. Campaign costs were minimal, thanks to direct contributions and good work by committee members. I hope to keep everyone on this committee for 2001.

Building and Grounds has addressed several significant challenges this past year and identified two that are being studied. I would be remiss if I did not recognize the significant contributions of several people. Among the challenges addressed were:

1. Three quarterly workdays supported by many

2. Locating and purchasing replacement lenses for many of our florescent lights

3. Replacement of one of the garage doors with a larger one which accommodates our newer van

4. Process underway to improve the sanctuary lighting

5. Designed and installed lighting for the children's playground

6. Purchased 2-way radios for the Sexton and Office Secretary

Two significant challenges are currently being studied and should be addressed in the very near future:

1. We have no restrooms that will accommodate wheelchairs or are disabled compliant. We would like to expand and remodel the restrooms in Jones Hall to meet this need.

2. The roofs on the sanctuary and all of the buildings are in dire need of replacement. Since the air conditioning and heating are very old, do not meet current code regulations, are inefficient, require servicing by climbing onto the roofs and must be removed to replace the roofs, these utilities are also being studied. Also, please notice that the cross on top of the sanctuary is leaning about 15 degrees to the northeast. The problem is metal fatigue at the base of the cross and must be addressed.

Session Committee: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Sunday School

Each Sunday, excepting a six-week break in July and early August and a two-week break in midwinter, Bible-based classes were offered for all ages at 9:00 A.M. In addition to a Bible study class for adults, a video class using various series that covered both Bible and contemporary topics was also conducted at this time.

Vacation Bible School

A very successful one-week program was conducted in June for children age three through fifth grade. The theme was "Journey with Joshua"; both archaeology and Biblical principles were emphasized. A highlight of the week was a field trip to Fort Selden.

Youth Program

Dan Yetter came to us as our new Youth Director in September. He conducts a full program of Biblically-based study and fellowship. Please refer to his separate report.

LOGOS Program

Our church has a Wednesday after-school program for first grade through high school called The Salt and Light Company. Please refer to the separate report.

More volunteers and supporters than we can name enable our church to carry on its Christian Education programs and fulfill its mission to provide nurture in our faith to both members and others who come.

 Session Committee: CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

This past year the Congregational Life Committee has assisted staffing the after-worship coffee hour with 68 volunteers covering 47 Sundays. Eight families volunteered for two or more Sundays. A new calendar has been posted for the forthcoming year. Added participation is needed by congregation members to achieve our goal of each family serving only one Sunday. With the merging of Congregational Life and Evangelism/Outreach Committees into Congregational Life and Outreach additional planning will be required to explore the new committee's duties and responsibilities. Additional committee volunteers will be sought to assist with specific church activities in the coming year.

The Evangelism Committee accomplished the following tasks this year:

  7. During the year members of the Evangelism Committee reviewed several proposals on how to contact newcomers to our community.

Congregational support of missions has been strong this year. This support has expanded once again. This expanded support included some funding to the two parent organizations (106-Suri Project-$525.00 & 107-Dalit Project-$525.00) of the Haspels (102-Suri) and the Prasads (105-Dalit)  

We were able to support our new-start missionaries of Cy1999 (103-Green (Brazil) and 101-Harvey (Singapore)) at the same level as last year. The rationale both last year and again this year is that these new-start missionaries do not have a large support base so Harvey was supported at $2450.00 and Green was supported at $2800.00. Both were originally funded by $2100.00 at the onset of the budget exercise for Cy2000 but this was increased for the reason stated above.

A relatively large number of missionaries visited FPC this year. The Waguespacks-139 wanted to visit while they were in the states this year but could not work it into a tight schedule. It was certainly a pleasure for Missions Committee members and Pastor John Poling and Jackie Poling to coordinate these visits. The Harveys stayed with John and Jackie while they were visiting. All of the missionary families spoke to the congregation during a Sunday service.

Bob Taylor continued faithfully to author the periodic article "Beyond Our Walls" missions newsletter for the Lantern. This work is designed to inform the congregation about the missionaries that FPC supports and includes other topics related to missions, missionary support and mission support motivation. Response from the congregation continues to be good.

Alex Burr wrote excellent articles for all five visiting missionaries which were published by the Las Cruces Sun News. Since we had five visiting missionary families this year, the work was not trivial. These articles were a great help in describing each missionary effort and emphasized the human side of the missionary effort including the missionary families involved; and they show that local churches in the community can make a difference in the world.

A letter to the Presbytery of Sierra Blanca (developed by Alex Burr and Al Johnson and submitted by the chairman) asked for better definition of contributions to the Synod including clarifications of recommended percentages. Limited staffing at Presbytery has delayed the answering of this letter in Cy2000.

Sunday food collections (sanctuary entrances) for Casa De Peregrinos continues to improve even into Cy2000. Betty Gallaher’s "refrigerator magnet reminders of 1999" continue to remind members of the church to bring food on Sunday for this effort. Our church members are good about bringing food. Mary Ferguson has taken on the task from Charlie Stone of collecting the food and delivering it to Casa De Peregrinos.

The Mission Statement (Approved by Session – Jun 1999) for the Missions Committee was reviewed and considered to be current for CY 2001.

The Missions Committee membership temporarily decreased by one member. Harriet and Al Johnson (Missions Committee member) moved to Colorado. This was offset by Tommy Matkin joining the Missions Committee. Therefore the committee membership remained stable.

Al Johnson is to be commended for his work on the Missions Committee despite ongoing difficulties with his health. Not only did he interact and participate well in committee work he set an excellent example in the way that he took the initiative to communicate regularly with his assigned missionaries.

File updates to the mission files at FPC has been ongoing throughout the year and much improvement has been noted.

Mell Peterson and Ann Miller have been instrumental in guiding the efforts of the Missions Committee with excellent ideas, coordination and examples that have been applied to how the committee has done business throughout the year. Mell Peterson has contributed significantly to the Cy2000 and Cy2001 budget work for the Missions Committee. The chairman of the Missions Committee is very much indebted to these individuals as well as to Gordon Hoff and Charlie Stone.

As was the case last year, the action and coordination activities have not been limited to the Missions Committee but include several other committee and church organizations. The actions of these committees and organizations are summarized in each summary report. All groups are to be commended for their dedicated work and financial support in Cy2000. The work effort cannot be translated into monetary value but suffice it to say, extensive effort has been expended. Examination of total monetary contributions including all budgeted and unbudgeted mission giving shows that 25.5% of the FPC Cy2000 budget represents the total moneys given for missions.

God certainly was with us and directed us as we did our best to ensure that our congregation had a meaningful worship experience.

New pew Bibles and large print hymnals were placed in the Sanctuary. We examined worship possibilities from praise service to blended service and traditional service. As we explored the various approaches to our Sunday worship we had an opportunity to try or expand on many suggestions: a monthly Hymn-Sing and Youth Sundays, for instance. The beautiful Cantata in December was another wonderful way in which we worshipped the Lord. We have realized improvements both in lighting and sound thanks to several members of our congregation and their contribution of time, money and expertise. We held Elder training for Wholeness & Healing, Communion, Liturgist, and Baptism. Our organ chimes were literally hauled out of the closet and mounted in the Sanctuary proper where they can be more fully appreciated both in sight and sound.

There is so much more that we could include and reflect upon. But the best way to find out about them and share the extra blessings they confer is by being a part of it. We welcome anyone who is interested in joining our committee. It will bless both you and our church.

VINE AND BRANCHES

The Vine and Branches is a fellowship group of parents and young couples that meets monthly for great fun and eating together. We were involved with many activities including the Camp Chimney Spring Retreat, City of Rocks camping trip, a swim party, a tailgate party at an Aggie football game, a Christmas party and a few after-church lunches. The activities planned for 2001 include bowling, an LCCT play, a possible mission trip to Mexico, a St. Patrick's Day get-together, swim party, camping, Camp Chimney Spring Retreat, and a Christmas party. Childcare is always provided for events that kids do not attend. You are encouraged to join the fun and fellowship we enjoy every month!

IN-BETWEENERS

The In-Betweeners is a fellowship group of "empty nesters" that meets the 4th Friday of each month. During 2000 our activities included attending community theater productions, dinner and barber-shop quartet concert in El Paso, potlucks, game night, and a progressive dinner Christmas party. We met at church, restaurants, and homes, and had lots of fun, food, and Christian fellowship. Please join us in 2001 for our regular meetings.

DESERT CRUISERS

The Desert Cruisers is a group of retired people - singles and couples - who have met for fellowship at noon on the 4th Monday of each month in Watkins Hall this year except on March, April and December. After a great potluck, a variety of interesting programs were presented. Our membership is open to all who are interested. Dues are $2.00 per person, a year.

After serving for many years as our Purser (treasurer) Maurice Hiers was called home. His responsibilities were ably taken over by Tom Whelan. Other officers are: SKIPPERS - Marc and Maggie Burr; FIRST MATE - Bernice Wright; LOGGER - Jean Hiers; Telephone committee: "THE ANGELS" are Margaret Hardin, Mary Neuberger and Bernice Wright.

 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN 

Membership in Presbyterian Women is open to all women of this congregation. Presbyterian Women in the congregation, presbytery, synod, and churchwide, support the mission of the church at home and around the world. Through participation and leadership in local circles, guilds, and gatherings, women are able to have direct ministry and study.

Our circles and guilds meet monthly to nurture faith through prayer, Bible study, and lively discussion. Monthly Gatherings for all women in our congregation are planned by the Coordinating Team. Gathering programs are diverse in nature to represent the many needs and interests of Presbyterian Women.

PW ACTIVITIES – 2000

1. PW funds were allocated to local, national and international mission projects

2. PW sewing program for Mission Projects was coordinated by Jean O’Neill; the finished projects were then sent to John Hyson Center (New Mexico), Kayenta Presbyterian Church (Arizona), and overseas hospitals

3. Memorial Student Aid Funds were dispersed to some of our congregation’s college students

4. PW Reception Committee coordinated several church receptions for memorial services and special occasions

5. Nine women, including one who served as a voting delegate, attended the Presbyterian Women 2000 Churchwide Gathering in Louisville, KY, in July

6. "Care packages" were sent to college students from this congregation in the spring and in the fall

7. Women from this congregation and Northminster Presbyterian Church baked 125 turkeys to be used in meals prepared after Thanksgiving in Juarez, through the "Hands of Luke" organization.

MEMORIAL STUDENT AID FUND

This first manse for First Presbyterian Church was built by funds raised by the Ladies Aid Society about 1935. Eventually it was sold and the $2000.00 received was turned over to the College Circle. In 1969 the Memorial Student Aid Fund was established with the provision that the principal would remain intact and only the interest would be used for college scholarship aid. Through the years the principal has increased through memorial donations and funds transferred from Presbyterian Women. The principal in the amount of $6,803.28, current market value as of 31 July 2000, is invested through the Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation.

Scholarships from the Memorial Student Aid Fund have been awarded to 74 students since the fund was established in 1969.

SALT AND LIGHT COMPANY

A Midweek Ministry for Children and Youth

Our Wednesday after-school program is affiliated with LOGOS Associates International. The four areas of worship skills, recreation, Bible study, and family-style dinners make up the content each week. The children and teens participate in choirs, crafts, games, and very enjoyable mealtime fellowship, as well as serious study of the Bible and the principles of living Christian lives.

The Computer Lab, new this fall, provides high-interest Bible-based programs for students to use.

The Christmas program performed by the elementary children, who were helped by some of the teens, was a great success. The bell and voice choirs that often highlight our worship services are parts of the worship skills strand of Salt & Light.

Forty-three are enrolled. Their families contribute to the program with volunteer service and with tuition. Students are encouraged to bring their friends, so there are sometimes guests.

Congregation members support Salt & Light wonderfully by volunteering countless hours as kitchen crew, teachers, recreation leaders, and table parents, as well as with special gifts. Everyone is invited to visit and to see the program in operation and to have dinner.

Sue Carter completed six years of service as director last May - and went to the original training in 1991! Many of us say "thank you, Sue".

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

OF LAS CRUCES FOUNDATION, INC.

Our local Foundation is a tax exempt corporation which was established to provide long-term financial support for the Church, while allowing members to take advantage of the tax benefits that are possible through donations to the Foundation. The Foundation can accept gifts of marketable securities (stocks, bonds, etc.), real estate, or other appreciated property with significant tax advantages to the donor.

The Session increased the membership of the Board of Directors of the Foundation to five this past year by the addition of Jack Curry and Arlyn Kriegel. The continuing members of the Board are Lynford Ames (president), James Parks (secretary), and Joel Tomlin. Curry and Kriegel will serve through 2003, Ames and Parks through 2002, and Tomlin through 2001.

The Board manages both those funds donated to the Foundation and certain memorial funds and other designated gifts that the Session has placed under the management of the Board. The eventual expenditure of any of these funds will continue to reflect the wishes of the original donors. The Church Financial Secretary keeps a record of the designated gifts in the Foundation.

Two Foundation investment accounts have been established with Charles Schwab, one for the Foundation funds and a second with the other funds that the Board manages for the Church. On December 31, 2000 the balance in the Foundation Schwab account was $53,024, while that in the second account was $35,099.

In addition to the funds invested with Charles Schwab, the Foundation has several pieces of real property: Two lots in Deming (for which there is currently not much of a market) and a home in Las Cruces. The home, which is currently rented, was mortgaged in 1999 for 10 years at less than one-half its market value to help provide funds for paving the parking lots. The current rent of $875/month covers the $648.90/month mortgage payments as well as taxes and maintenance. The Foundation also had a commercial property on the downtown mall which was sold for a net gain of $28,490.
