Building and Grounds Minutes
May 8,
2012
Jerry
opened the meeting with a prayer at 7:000 p.m.
Committee members present were: Jerry Grandle, Janet Loman, Roger Sellers,
Eddie Armendariz and Bruce Pearson.
Old
Business:
We
briefly discussed some routine housekeeping matters. Eddie said
that the new vacuum cleaner is working well. He also expressed
the opinion that he, rather than our church handyman Barry Fowler, should be
responsible for cleaning the floors, bathrooms and windows, as these duties
are janitorial. The Committee agreed.
New
Business:
We
spent most of the meeting organizing our church work day, scheduled for
Saturday, May 12, between 8 a.m. and noon. Jerry passed out work
sheets listing the various projects we wish to tackle on the work day.
These lists also indicated which tools and supplies would be needed for each
project. Jerry asked each committee member to report at the
church an hour early, at 0700 hours, on Saturday, in order to have
everything ready for the volunteers when they arrive at 0800. As
previously agreed, Roger will hand out the worksheets to the teams of
volunteers and will check them off when they have completed each project.
Bruce reported that he had already begun trimming the trees and would
continue this task on work day, with the help of some volunteers.
The members reported some difficulties in meeting our goal of contacting
every member of our congregation to tell them about the work day, but we
were cautiously optimistic that we would get a decent turnout.
The departure of the Children's Garden will necessitate considerable
clean-up work in Branigan Hall in order to get it ready for exclusive use of
our expanding Sunday School classes. Specifically, we will have
to do a thorough cleaning of the walls and ceilings before we can repaint
Branigan. Per a request from Judith Ames, the Committee agreed not to
dispose of anything in Branigan, including old furniture, which the
Children's Garden personnel left behind when they left. The Sunday
School directors will decide which items they wish to keep and which should
be removed. We also tentatively decided that there is no longer
a need to replace the locking exterior gates now that the Children's Garden
is gone.
We discussed a request from Millie Conrad to the Session, passed on to B & G
by Carlton Connor, that we designate additional handicapped parking spaces
in both the east and south parking lots. We will probably not be
able to complete this project on work day but will tackle it in the near
future.
The lawn sprinklers in the main courtyard are not watering the area evenly,
apparently due to silt blocking the lines. We will probably have
to blow out the lines, but this will not be a project for the work day.
Moreover, one of the sprinkler heads is broken and will have to be replaced.
We continued our previous discussion on the need to replace the carpet in
Jones Hall. Janet volunteered to contact Malooley's Carpet Co.
to get a price estimate.
At our next scheduled meeting, on June 12, we will formulate our final
recommendations on the use of the handicap-equipped van for presentation to
the Session.
Roger adjourned the meeting with a prayer at 8:10 p.m..
Respectfully submitted by Bruce Pearson
