 MEDITATION IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

(Hebrews 1:10-11, 13:8)

 MUSIC MEDITATION

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

 *CALL TO WORSHIP                                                                              Bill Brown

Leader:   If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

People:  If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I

may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Leader:   Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious, or boastful, or arrogant,  or rude. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

People:  For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

 *PROCESSIONAL HYMN

#423     “Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun”              DUKE STREET

Ř Please Use Hymnal   (verses 1, 2, 3, & 5)

*PRAYER OF ADORATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (Unison)

O Lord our God, how good it is to gather once again in your Presence and leave behind the stress of our busy lives and the corrupting influences of our world.  O Lord, help us hear your voice, bathe us in your truth and promises, and here may we experience what it is to be the one body of Christ, truly a family united in love and faith.  We pray that you will send your Spirit to still and comfort our troubled minds, restore to us the peace and joy of your salvation, so that we may respond in faithfulness and obedience, with renewed passion and hunger to more fully know,  honor and walk with you…Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen

 PLEASE BE SEATED

CALL TO CONFESSION    #363   “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me”       SOJOURNER

Ř Please Use Hymnal   (verses 1 & 2 only)

 PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayers of your servants, confessing our sins which we have sinned against you. We have offended you deeply, failing to keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances that you commanded your servant Moses. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, “but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, I will gather them and bring them to the place at which I have chosen to establish my name.” O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayers of your servants who delight in revering your name and grant us your mercy.

TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION AND REFLECTION

ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE AND MERCY

Leader:   God is gracious and loving.  Hear the Good News of the gospel; that

nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God through Christ Jesus.  In Jesus Christ, all our sins are forgiven.

People:  Thanks be to God; all our sins are forgiven and gone.  Amen.

 PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE LESSONS         Deuteronomy 18:15-22          Mark 1:21-28

Leader:    This is the word of the Lord.

People:    Thanks be to God.

Deuteronomy 18:15-22 (New Revised Standard Version)

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. {16} This is what you requested of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: "If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die." {17} Then the LORD replied to me: "They are right in what they have said. {18} I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. {19} Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. {20} But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak--that prophet shall die." {21} You may say to yourself, "How can we recognize a word that the LORD has not spoken?" {22} If a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it.

Mark 1:21-28 (New Revised Standard Version)

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. {22} They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. {23} Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, {24} and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." {25} But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" {26} And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. {27} They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching--with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." {28} At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

Expect great things of God and His grace will come to you! Please take a moment to fill out the friendship pads so we can greet you by name. Thank you for coming to First Presbyterian Church; we are glad that you are here. If you are not active in a church home in this community, we invite you to consider joining our fellowship and sharing in this ministry of Christ. We also have CD’s of our Worship services or printed copies of the sermons available. If you would like to have a copy, please contact the office at 526-5559.

Our sacred space is not this building or this Sanctuary, but it is the fellowship we share, the hospitality we live, and the presence of God we see in each other.

For prayer requests during the week, call the church office to get your request on the Church-wide Prayer Chain, or e-mail Linda Ramirez at fpclinda@zianet.com

First Presbyterian Church’s mission is to emulate the work, the word, and the way of Jesus Christ in ministering to the needs of its members and preparing them for Christian outreach to people within and outside the Church of Jesus Christ.

Our Vision Objectives are:

1.     To clearly and courageously communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ to all within reach.

2.     To develop spiritual leadership that recognizes and ministers to those in need.

3.     To develop and maintain specific ways for members to reach out and draw the community into our fellowship.

4.     To create a God-centered atmosphere for worship that will attract and bind individuals, families, and youth into Christian community.
