SOURCES:

My first source of info for all this page is my father's late brother, James Bassett Gwin II. Page 46 of his collection is entitled BASSET FAMILY HISTORY and starts out:

"Compiled by James Basset Gwin II of 2918 45 St New Orleans 20, LA in the year 1949 from records submitted from the collections of Kate L. Gwin Tuscaloosa Al, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC.   Information obtained from Major Champ Carter McCulloch who employed genealogists to trace this ancestry. "

My second source is Mr. Jeffrey Neil Bassett,  <jbassett@packagingcorp.com> who saw my page and sent me information he said came from Elizabeth Nitschke Hicks. I cut his info apart and added each piece where it was applicable. Thus each note preceded by JB/ENH came from him. Thanks, Jeffrey.

And now my third source is Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Nitschke Hicks herself , erootrot@usa.net , my third cousin once removed. Special thanks to you, Liz, for all your insight, help, and information! :-)

Today, 6 May 2001, I received a wonderful e.mail from Mr. Richard Snewin at RHSnewin@aol.com, who sent lots of infromation concerning James Basset (3.01 below), and his wife Susanna Snewin.

Basset, pronounced /bah-SAY/ is French. When Jean Jacques Luis Basset married Madamoselle Mary Lavalette and had two children, that's how they would have pronounced it.  But when their son moved to England, the locals there called it Bassett, pronounced /BAH-sut/ (rhymes with "Toss it!"), and added the extra tee, which some of James' and Mary's children evidently kept.  Even later, though, when the family started moving to Alabama, the locals must've said, "No, your name is Bassett   pronounced /BASS-ut/ (rhymes with "Pass it!"), though I've personally heard some of my present-day Alabama friends and relatives pronounce it in a three-syllable drawl, /BAY-us-ut/ (rhymes with "Pay us it!")   For example, Uncle James' middle name is Bassett, and he always pronounced it with the Alabaman pronunciation, never the French or British. He said his dad (same name) always pronounced it that way, too, and he assumed his grandmother, Ida Eliza Bassett, did also.

21.00--Jean Jacques Luis Basset m. Madamoselle Mary Lavalette; 2 sons; (siblings and parents of JJLB and ML are unk. to me).

My uncle James Gwin's notes said his name was Georges Basset m. Madamoselle Lavalette. He got that information and all the following information in 1949 from the collections of Kate L. Gwin, Tuscaloosa, AL, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC, who had gotten it earlier from Maj. Champe Carter McCulloch, mayor of Waco, TX, who "employed genealogists to trace this ancestry." Uncle James' introductory paragraph to his Basset pages reads,

"The name BASSET is French and originally pronounced "BASS-A", with a long A. The first mention of this name revealed in research is found in 'The Geneva Armorial' in 1399 as a Burgess named Robert son of Permet member of the council of state in 1404 (sic). The closest relative found was a Georges Basset in Geneva, Switzerland, who was a member of a Hugenot family in the eighteenth century before the French Revolution. Georges Basset was apprenticed to a silversmith and fell in love with a Madamoselle Lavalette who was the daughter of a French nobleman. Her parents objected to their courtship and sent her away to Wales to school to separate them. Georges followed her and married her. They had two sons. One of them emigrated to America, and his whole family were wiped out in a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The other son, named John James Louis Basset married Mary Miles, an English girl, and they settled in Sussex, England and raised 14 children."
Some of what this unknown, employed, genealogist found is obviously correct, but it is also clear that some confusion exists. If Georges Basset is indeed in this line, he may have been the FATHER of the Jean Jacques Luis Basset I (John James Louis Basset I), the latter of whom went to England and married Mary Lavalette as is proven below. Our cousin Liz Hicks sent me a photocopy of the old 1767 marriage license. I transcribe it here with typeset words in boldface type and handwritten words in italic type. The five signatures are also underlined. The fact that he is listed here as a watchmaker perhaps lends credence to the story of someone being apprenticed to a silversmith, above. The fact that the last names of the two witnesses are neither Basset nor Lavalette perhaps lends credence to the story of their eloping without either parents' permission (or at least presence). And the fact that the fourth child of JJL Basset II is George perhaps lends credence to the existence of a Georges in their upline somewhere.

22.01--One of the children (no name listed) allegedly emigrated to America; the family all allegedly perished in Philadelphia in a yellow fever epidemic.

22.02--John James Louis Basset (Jr.?) m. Mary Miles, an English girl; settled in Sussex, England; 14 ch.; [JB/ENH notes: *53B1. Jean Jacques Luis "James" Basset - m. Mary Miles 13 Jun 1803 in St. Marylebone, London, Eng.]

Some of these fourteen children emigrated to America, almost all of whom came to Cahaba, AL. Those known (or reported/believed) to have made this trip (or these trips, as I so far know only how and when one family--William and Harriet--came, not the others) across the Atlantic include (1) James, (3) Charlotte (and her husband Fred Cheeseman), (4) George, (5) William (and his wife Harriet), (6) Louis (he married Sarah Gwin in Cahaba), (8) John (mentioned in Fry's Memories of Old Cahaba), (10) Joseph (he married Mary Gwin in Cahaba), and (11) Emma (all three of her marriages occurred in North America). Suffice it for now to say that little is known of and some confusion exists concerning the three youngest as to whether or not they came, exactly what their names were, and how and when they died.

Immediately next is the list I have of the fourteen. Following it is an expanded version of that list with known downlines.

23.01--James Basset
23.02--Mary Basset
23.03--Charlotte Basset (m. Fred Cheeseman)
23.04--George Basset
23.05--William Basset (m. Harriet Bowley)--(my great-great-grandparents)
23.06--Louis Basset (m. Sarah Gwin)
23.07--Sarah Basset (m. Robert Jordan)
23.08--John Miles Basset
23.09--Henry Basset
23.10--Joseph Lavalette Basset (m. Mary Ann Gwin)
23.11--Emma Maria Basset (m. Carl Ludwig Nitschke)
23.12--Thomas Archibald Basset, or Thomas Basset (twin)
23.13--Charles Basset, or Archibald Basset (twin)
23.14--Robert Basset or Charles Robert Basset
(23.15)--Harry Bridger (called Henry)--maybe adopted, maybe only a close friend raised by the family, but not blood related

Today, 6 May 2001, I received the following e.mail from Mr. Richard Snewin:

Subject: Family History - Snewin
Received: 5/06/2001 6:04 PM
From: <richard.snewin@ntlworld.com>
To: john, jmcdgwin@zianet.com

I have been carrying out a "one-name" study of the Snewin name for some 13 years and have extensive information going back continuously to 1680. Also available is info regarding coins produced by family members between 980 and 1150. Please note that Susannah Snewin is actually Jane Susannah Snewin, born 31 Mar 1803 at Worthing Sussex, the 1st. child (of 7) of John Snewin and Elizabeth Bailey. J.S.S. married James [Basset] on 22 Oct 1833 at Broadwater Church, Worthing.

Her parents are buried in the churchyard by the main door to the church. Her father's notes are as follows: -"Born at 5 o'clock on Friday evening". Baptized by Mr. Salmon. Occupation. Carpenter and Builder. Left family firm in Clapton, London in 1803 and moved to Worthing, a place that had become popular with Royalty and was growing. Started Snewin and Sons, Builders, Worthing which is still in business in 2001 although no Snewins involved in running it.

A Market, authorised (chartered?) by Act of Parliament, with imposing entrances in Ann Street and Market Street, was opened in 1810. It was square with stalls around the outer walls and a pump in the centre, earning revenue of £30 per annum for the town. This was sold for £600 to John circa 1820, who used it as the firm's yard. "...departed this life on Tuesday, June 9th. 1835 aged 60, died and buried at Worthing." Buried at St. Mary's, Broadwater, Sussex. Gravestone reads "In Memory of John Snewin, died June 9 1835 aged 60 years, He lived respected and died lamented. - also of Elizabeth, his wife died 28 February 1848 aged 70 years".   Gravestone at St. Mary's, Broadwater, is to be found at right hand of path to Church door, immediately before the door. Will dated 31 January 1828 and proved in Prerogative Court of Canterbury 6th. August 1835. I hope this is of interest, but should you want any further details, let me know. Regards, Dick Snewin

James Basset, 1st child of J. J. L. Basset, married Jane Susannah Snewin, 22 October 1833 at Worthing. She was the 1st child (of 6) of John Snewin (1775-1835) and Elizabeth Bailey (1778-1848) of Worthing. They moved from Hackney, Middlesex in 1802. More can be seen of the Snewin line back to a marriage of Elkanah Snewin and Elizabeth Stanes on 2 July 1682 at St. James, Dukes Place, London in 1682 on www.snewin.org if you are interested. Sincerely, Dick Snewin

On 23 Jun 2005, I received this letter:
Dear Mr. J. Gwin:

I thought you would be interested in this letter regarding the firm Snewins. Did you know that there was another Building Contractor Firm by the name of Snewin Bros, at Littlehampton, England, seven miles further along the coast? They were established there in the middle of the 19th century, and when I arrived at Snewin & Son in 1948, it was being run by two brothers who were descendants of the founder; they lived together, and one was a bachelor whilst the other was married but had no children.

They sold the business (it went bust some years later) and retired down to the West country, but didn't stay long as the air affected Mrs. Snewin's breathing. They moved again and came to Worthing, West Sussex, England, and I can plainly remember meeting them at their new residence and estimating for renovations and alterations they required carrying out.

I was at the firm from 3rd August 1948 until I was struck down with a stroke 55 years, nine months, and six days later! My old partner, Bert Matthews, started at the firm in 1926 and was there for 70 years; he was only working part-time for the last 10 to 15 years. We had to pick him up each afternoon to bring him to work, as he didn't drive. He was bachelor and lived on his own.  Finally we called one afternoon and found him dead in his chair and at peace.

I will be making some photostats of various memorabilia I have down the office and will forward same on to you if you are interested.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Mr. A. T. Munn

23.02--Mary Basset, b. unk.; d. unk.; reported to have m. Mr. Isaacs, remained in England, and died without issue;

23.03--Charlotte Basset, b. 3 Aug 1806 or 21 Jul l806, England; d. 4 Oct 1876 Matagorda Co.,TX (near Bay City and the Gulf Coast); m. 19 Sep 1830 at Preston, England (near Brighton--from their marriage certificate: "both of this parish, witnesses: James Basset(t) & Mary Cheeseman" ), to Frederick Cheeseman (b. ca. 1806-07; from Frederick Cheeseman's tombstone in Matagorda Co., TX: Born Horsham, England; Died 8 Nov 1866; Age 59 years.); 3 children in the 1860 census;

In addition, Cousin Elizabeth (Liz) Nitschke Hicks  erootrot@usa.net  sent me some photographs and other documents after we discovered each other on the internet in 1999.]

24.01--Charles F. Cheeseman, b. in Worthing Sussex, England, in 1835, according to Uncle James' records, but Liz Hicks sent me a copy of their listing for the 1870 census of Matagorda Co., TX, and his age appears there as 38, which would make him b. in 1831-32; d. unk; bd. unk; m. Batistine Roe in Texas; 3 children;
[JOHN GWIN NOTE: in the same 1870 census of Matagorda Co., TX, a Charlotte Cheeseman, age 42 and born in England, is listed as a housekeeper and living with Charles F. and the three children, Irene (9), Martin (8), and Frederick (4). We know that Charles' father, Fred, had died in 1866, and since Charles' wife, Batistine, does not appear in this census, we may assume that she also had died in the four years since baby Frederick was born; therefore, I believe that this Charlotte, listed as age 42 and being born in England, is indeed our Charlotte, the mother of Charles, and that either someone made a mistake in transcribing notes or she intentionally lied about her age, which in truth would've been 64, not 42!]
25.01--Irene "Rena" Cheeseman, b. in TX ca. 1861 (age 9 in Matagorda Co., TX, 1870 census; d. unk; bd. unk; m. Walter Ives; 5 ch.;

AL, to Mary Ellen Lister (b. 18 Jul 1842; d. 18 Feb 18_4); 8 ch.; in the 1860 census, he was age 23, working as a mail contractor, and living with his parents in Matagorda Co., TX;
[GWIN NOTE: Since he married Mary Ellen 2 years later in 1862 in Cahaba, he must've gone back there to marry her! According to Anna Fry in Memories of Old Cahaba, Jerry "Jere" Lister lived "over the point" (i.e., across the Cahaba River by ferry from downtown Cahaba) in the same neighborhood as did John and William Basset, two of Robert George Cheeseman's uncles. Fry says that each of the three were proprietors of fashionable tailor shops, and it may be that they were partners of a single shop. It is likely, then, that Mary Ellen Lister is the daughter of this same Jerry Lister.]

Robert Darrington Boykin was born on February 20, 1828 in Conech Co. AL. He is the son of Francis Boykin and his wife Mary Darrington James who settled in Dallas Co. AL in the 1830's. Robert Darrington was married twice:

1) Ellen Vernon Scott (18-32-1872) daughter of Alfred Vernon Scott and Mary William Bibb. He had six children by his first wife, Ellen Vernon.

2) Mary Bassett (1850-1883) and he had one child, Charlotte Mary Boykin.

Evidently Robert Darrington Boykin attended the Grace Episcopal Church in Tilden, AL. At least one of his children, Robert Darrington Boykin, Jr. and his second wife Mary Bassett Boykin are buried in the Grace Church Cemetery at Tilden. Does anyone know if his first wife Ellen Vernon Scott Boykin and three of his children, Ellen Scott Boykin, Robert Darrington Boykin, Jr., Bettie Lee Boykin are buried at the Grace Church Cemetery also? Have extensive information on the Boykin family. Will be glad to share what information I have. I am a descendant of the brother of Robert Darrington Boykin, James Boykin (1823-1907) and his wife Eliza Ann Scott Boykin. Charlotte G. Boykin

Excerpts from the book Memories of Old Cahaba (photocopies of several pages sent to me first by Liz Hicks, a copy of which book I now own):

From page 27: "...several millinery establishments, shoe stores, the fashionable tailor shops of
John and William Bassett [brothers 3.5 and 3.8 above] and Jerry Lister, and Brenner's tin shop."

Liz Hicks also sent me some photographs, two of which are of the sign at the New Cemetery at Cahaba and the headstone of this William Basset, which read, respectively:

"NEW CEMETERY -- Burials in this cemetery, which served Cahaba from 1848 to 1900, tell a story of the town in which many deaths resulted from diseases of infancy, childhood, and early adult life, yellow fever being a large factor. Because of proximity to Gulf of Mexico ports, Cahaba had many plagues brought in by a constantly changing population. The famous Bell Monument is in this cemetery. --Cahaba Historical Commission." and

"William Basset, born at Worthing, Sussex Co., England, Feb. 21, 1812. Died March 5, 1886".

* 53B1B. Emily Maria Basset, daughter of James and Mary (Miles) Bassett, was born 20 Jun 1824 in Brighton, Sussex Co., England. She died in 1873 in Travis Co., Texas. She married (1) Sir George Benton in England according to the family Bible. She married (2) John P. Veidt in 1854 in Sumter Co., AL. He died six weeks later. She married (3) Carl Ludwig Nitschke in 1854 in Sumter Co., AL. Emily and George went to Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario, Canada, when she was 18. George and her infant son died of typhoid fever and she went to live with her brother in New York then to her brother in Alabama. She married her second and third husbands in Alabama. Carl was a cabinet maker. After the town of Gainesville, Alabama, burned, they left and went to Austin, Travis Co., Texas. He owned a cabinet and furniture business there, serving for Texas in the Civil War. Emily established the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. One son became a city councilman and another became chief of police (1920's). Most of the family members are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Travis Co., Texas.

Because of proximity to Gulf of Mexico ports, Cahaba had many plagues brought in by a constantly changing population. Excerpt from Memorial and Biographical History of Dallas County, Texas (1892): G.T. Macon, a contractor and builder of Dallas, came here in March, 1889, and has already erected many residences here, as well as the Oak Cliff Hotel and the Christian Church. Besides, he has also put up several business houses, as the Henderson building on Commerce street, etc. in 1890 when he employed 250 men. He was born in Alabama, in 1845, the fifth in order of birth of the ten children of E.J. and Mary Ann (Syler) Macon. His father was born in North Carolina and early in life settled in Alabama. He was at first a saddler, and afterward became a planter and accumulated considerable wealth, but the ravages of war swept it mostly away. He died in 1863 and his wife, a native of Alabama, died in 1861 - both in Shelby County, Alabama.......... In 1864, in Shelby County, Alabama, Mr. Macon was married to M.E. Bassett, a native of that State and brought up in Cahaba. Her parents were Joseph L. and M.A. (Gwin) Bassett. Her father was born in England, and her mother in Alabama. She died in 1845, and the father was killed in a sawmill in Talladega county, that State, in 1865. 3.11--Emma Maria Basset, b. 13 May 1825; d. Apr 1873; m1. Charles Robert Basset - died 7 Feb 1837, aged 7 years (3.15)--Harry Bridger (called Henry) was a Cockney orphan boy who was apprenticed to William and Louis Basset in England and came to America with the family , fought in the Civil War, and was faithful to the family, remaining in Alabama, and dying unmarried at an old age. A census of Cahaba, Ala., in 1850 showed Henry Bridger to be 19 years old. He helped them all and was well beloved by them all. He made a trip in 1892 to England to visit his mother. [John M. Gwin NOTE, 1999: Some quick math shows that Henry would have been perhaps a year older than Robert (or Charles Robert), who died at age seven of unnamed causes. Pure speculation allows that perhaps there had been plans to apprentice Robert, and at his death, Henry was semi-adopted by Robert's older brothers William (my gg-grandfather) and/or Louis as a "replacement". Or perhaps the relationship with Henry was established earlier and Henry and Robert actually knew each other. The number (3.15) before Henry's name was added by me in the speculation that perhaps he had even been adopted by the parents, John James Louis and Mary Miles Basset.]

Robert Edward Nitschke b. 16 Mar 1866 Austin, TX; m. 11 Dec 1890 Elizabeth Anna Helen Richter; Both are buried in new section of Oakwood Cem., Austin, TX. He was police chief of Austin, TX during 1920's. He was my grandfather. Their children: Lula Mae Nitschke m. William F. Devine; Robert E. Nitschke, Jr. married Williard Griffith (great granddaughter of Susanna Dickinson Hannig, the lady Santa Anna let out of the Alamo to go tell what had happened), and my dad, Herbert C. Nitschke. Only 2 first cousins of my dad and myself are living. I am an only grandchild and only child. Emma Basset Nitschke, my great grandmother, was the sister to your William Basset, father of Ida Eliza Basset Gwin. Therefore, I believe Emma Basset Nitschke was Ida's aunt. Some puzzles: Emma Maria Basset born May 13, 1824, was christened in Broadwater, England June 20, 1824. Christening record states daughter of James and Mary Basset of Worthing, England (milkman). The "milkman" conflicts with fam. info. as have James Basset was a "draper" gentlemen's tailor. Also, marriage record from England: William Basset and Harriett Bowley married by banns, Broadwater, 22 Jan 1837. Harriett baptised 6 Aug 1821 Clymping, Eng., dtr. of Edmund and Kitty Bowley. Charlotte Cheeseman b. 21 Jul l806 Eng.; d. 4 Oct 1876 Matagorda Co.,TX; m. at Preston (near Brighton), Eng. 19 Sep 1830, Frederick Cheeseman, both of this parish, witnesses: James Basset(t) & Mary Cheeseman On Frederick Cheeseman's tombstone has born Horsham, England died 8 Nov1866 age 59 years. Snuff box- according to Edith Snow's papers from VA Historical Society..."His brother [William Basset's] came to New York and left children. We do not know who they were. He was a secretary in some Institute of Science in Worthing, England. When he left for America, was presented with a silver snuff-box. He left it to his namesake, Uncle Jim Basset. Peter Gwin has it now." Maybe you can check with some of Peter Gwin's desc. and be SURE they understand WE DON'T WANT THE SNUFF BOX, JUST THE INFORMATION/INSCRIPTION so I can try to follow up on in England. Some people get real nervous when "cousins" go looking for family heirlooms such as Bibles, etc. By the way, I have a picture of my great grandmother, Emma Basset Nitschke born 1824 taken in 1854, also picture of William Basset's tombstone in the new cemetery at Old Cahaba, near Selma, Dallas Co.,AL. I'll see if can get copied if you want. The Episcopal church they belonged to in Old Cahaba was moved to near Orrville, AL and was still standing as of 1997. I'll try and get some info. copied and mailed to you. I would like to have copies of your uncle's research or info. I'll try and narrow this request down after I study the info. I printed from your website. Oh, Mary Ann Basset, dtr. of William and Harriett Basset, m. 15 Nov 1881 R.D. (Robert) Boykin in Dallas Co., AL. Best, Liz Hicks erootrot@usa.net

Hello Ann;

Richard and Ann Basset had at least 8 Children. Here are 2 PDF Christening docs: Thomas (father of James 1808-1814) and James (father of Lewis 1814).

James and Louis (Lewis) Basset were not brothers. They were both christened in the same year, but the actual birth dates are unknown. Regardless, they have different parents. PDF enclosed.

Enclosed PDF is James Basset's documentation.

PDF of Alfred's the index record for Alfred.

Love to those Mormon Scribes,
Bud
