Today, 6 May 2001, I received a wonderful e.mail from Mr. Richard Snewin at RHSnewin@aol.com, who sent lots of infromation concerning James Basset (3.01 below), and his wife Susanna Snewin.
 

Basset, pronounced /bah-SAY/ is French. When Jean Jacques Luis Basset married Madamoselle Mary Lavalette and had two children, that's how they would have pronounced it.  But when their son moved to England, the locals there called it Bassett, pronounced /BAH-sut/ (rhymes with "Toss it!"), and added the extra tee, which some of James' and Mary's children evidently kept.  Even later, though, when the family started moving to Alabama, the locals must've said, "No, your name is Bassett   pronounced /BASS-ut/ (rhymes with "Pass it!"), though I've personally heard some of my present-day Alabama friends and relatives pronounce it in a three-syllable drawl, /BAY-us-ut/ (rhymes with "Pay us it!")   For example, Uncle James' middle name is Bassett, and he always pronounced it with the Alabaman pronunciation, never the French or British. He said his dad (same name) always pronounced it that way, too, and he assumed his grandmother, Ida Eliza Bassett, did also.

My uncle James Gwin's notes said his name was Georges Basset m. Madamoselle Lavalette. He got that information and all the following information in 1949 from the collections of Kate L. Gwin, Tuscaloosa, AL, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC, who had gotten it earlier from Maj. Champe Carter McCulloch, mayor of Waco, TX, who "employed genealogists to trace this ancestry." Uncle James' introductory paragraph to his Basset pages reads,

"The name BASSET is French and originally pronounced "BASS-A", with a long A. The first mention of this name revealed in research is found in 'The Geneva Armorial' in 1399 as a Burgess named Robert son of Permet member of the council of state in 1404 (sic). The closest relative found was a Georges Basset in Geneva, Switzerland, who was a member of a Hugenot family in the eighteenth century before the French Revolution. Georges Basset was apprenticed to a silversmith and fell in love with a Madamoselle Lavalette who was the daughter of a French nobleman. Her parents objected to their courtship and sent her away to Wales to school to separate them. Georges followed her and married her. They had two sons. One of them emigrated to America, and his whole family were wiped out in a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The other son, named John James Louis Basset married Mary Miles, an English girl, and they settled in Sussex, England and raised 14 children."

Some of these fourteen children emigrated to America, almost all of whom came to Cahaba, AL. Those known (or reported/believed) to have made this trip (or these trips, as I so far know only how and when one family--William and Harriet--came, not the others) across the Atlantic include (1) James, (3) Charlotte (and her husband Fred Cheeseman), (4) George, (5) William (and his wife Harriet), (6) Louis (he married Sarah Gwin in Cahaba), (8) John (mentioned in Fry's Memories of Old Cahaba), (10) Joseph (he married Mary Gwin in Cahaba), and (11) Emma (all three of her marriages occurred in North America). Suffice it for now to say that little is known of and some confusion exists concerning the three youngest as to whether or not they came, exactly what their names were, and how and when they died.

I have been carrying out a "one-name" study of the Snewin name for some 13 years and have extensive information going back continuously to 1680. Also available is info regarding coins produced by family members between 980 and 1150. Please note that Susannah Snewin is actually Jane Susannah Snewin, born 31 Mar 1803 at Worthing Sussex, the 1st. child (of 7) of John Snewin and Elizabeth Bailey. J.S.S. married James [Basset] on 22 Oct 1833 at Broadwater Church, Worthing.

Her parents are buried in the churchyard by the main door to the church. Her father's notes are as follows: -"Born at 5 o'clock on Friday evening". Baptized by Mr. Salmon. Occupation. Carpenter and Builder. Left family firm in Clapton, London in 1803 and moved to Worthing, a place that had become popular with Royalty and was growing. Started Snewin and Sons, Builders, Worthing which is still in business in 2001 although no Snewins involved in running it.

A Market, authorised (chartered?) by Act of Parliament, with imposing entrances in Ann Street and Market Street, was opened in 1810. It was square with stalls around the outer walls and a pump in the centre, earning revenue of £30 per annum for the town. This was sold for £600 to John circa 1820, who used it as the firm's yard. "...departed this life on Tuesday, June 9th. 1835 aged 60, died and buried at Worthing." Buried at St. Mary's, Broadwater, Sussex. Gravestone reads "In Memory of John Snewin, died June 9 1835 aged 60 years, He lived respected and died lamented. - also of Elizabeth, his wife died 28 February 1848 aged 70 years".   Gravestone at St. Mary's, Broadwater, is to be found at right hand of path to Church door, immediately before the door. Will dated 31 January 1828 and proved in Prerogative Court of Canterbury 6th. August 1835. I hope this is of interest, but should you want any further details, let me know. Regards, Dick Snewin

James Basset, 1st child of J. J. L. Basset, married Jane Susannah Snewin, 22 October 1833 at Worthing. She was the 1st child (of 6) of John Snewin (1775-1835) and Elizabeth Bailey (1778-1848) of Worthing. They moved from Hackney, Middlesex in 1802. Dear Mr. J. Gwin:

I thought you would be interested in this letter regarding the firm Snewins. Did you know that there was another Building Contractor Firm by the name of Snewin Bros, at Littlehampton, England, seven miles further along the coast? They were established there in the middle of the 19th century, and when I arrived at Snewin & Son in 1948, it was being run by two brothers who were descendants of the founder; they lived together, and one was a bachelor whilst the other was married but had no children.

They sold the business (it went bust some years later) and retired down to the West country, but didn't stay long as the air affected Mrs. Snewin's breathing. They moved again and came to Worthing, West Sussex, England, and I can plainly remember meeting them at their new residence and estimating for renovations and alterations they required carrying out.
 
I was at the firm from 3rd August 1948 until I was struck down with a stroke 55 years, nine months, and six days later! My old partner, Bert Matthews, started at the firm in 1926 and was there for 70 years; he was only working part-time for the last 10 to 15 years. We had to pick him up each afternoon to bring him to work, as he didn't drive. He was bachelor and lived on his own.  Finally we called one afternoon and found him dead in his chair and at peace.

[JOHN GWIN NOTE:  My dad, Adrian Sutton Gwin (6.3--7.4 above) told me 14 Jul 2000 that his uncle, George Henry Gwin, was a conductor for the Seaboard RR somewhere on the east coast and went on strike. In 1931, Dad and his family lived in Demopolis, AL, and that was the very year that Uncle George's family stopped to visit Dad's family for several days on their way to the west coast to live in Oregon where George continued to work as a railroad conductor and flagman. He believes that Aunt Valera may have died out in Oregon; regardless, Uncle George finally retired there and moved to Florida where he lived his remaining years. For several years Dad and their son, George H. Gwin II, exchanged Christmas cards, most recently in December 1998. Dad gave me cousin George's 1998 address in Miami Springs, FL, and I've written to him, but he's not responded.]

Robert Darrington Boykin was born on February 20, 1828 in Conech Co. AL. He is the son of Francis Boykin and his wife Mary Darrington James who settled in Dallas Co. AL in the 1830's. Robert Darrington was married twice:

1) Ellen Vernon Scott (18-32-1872) daughter of Alfred Vernon Scott and Mary William Bibb. He had six children by his first wife, Ellen Vernon.

2) Mary Bassett (1850-1883) and he had one child, Charlotte Mary Boykin.

Evidently Robert Darrington Boykin attended the Grace Episcopal Church in Tilden, AL. At least one of his children, Robert Darrington Boykin, Jr. and his second wife Mary Bassett Boykin are buried in the Grace Church Cemetery at Tilden. Does anyone know if his first wife Ellen Vernon Scott Boykin and three of his children, Ellen Scott Boykin, Robert Darrington Boykin, Jr., Bettie Lee Boykin are buried at the Grace Church Cemetery also? Have extensive information on the Boykin family. Will be glad to share what information I have. "NEW CEMETERY -- Burials in this cemetery, which served Cahaba from 1848 to 1900, tell a story of the town in which many deaths resulted from diseases of infancy, childhood, and early adult life, yellow fever being a large factor. Because of proximity to Gulf of Mexico ports, Cahaba had many plagues brought in by a constantly changing population. The famous Bell Monument is in this cemetery. --Cahaba Historical Commission." and

* 53B1B. Emily Maria Basset, daughter of James and Mary (Miles) Bassett, was born 20 Jun 1824 in Brighton, Sussex Co., England. She died in 1873 in Travis Co., Texas. She married (1) Sir George Benton in England according to the family Bible. She married (2) John P. Veidt in 1854 in Sumter Co., AL. He died six weeks later. She married (3) Carl Ludwig Nitschke in 1854 in Sumter Co., AL. Emily and George went to Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario, Canada, when she was 18. George and her infant son died of typhoid fever and she went to live with her brother in New York then to her brother in Alabama. She married her second and third husbands in Alabama. Carl was a cabinet maker. After the town of Gainesville, Alabama, burned, they left and went to Austin, Travis Co., Texas. He owned a cabinet and furniture business there, serving for Texas in the Civil War. Emily established the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. One son became a city councilman and another became chief of police (1920's). Most of the family members are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Travis Co., Texas.

A census of Cahaba, Ala., in 1850 showed Henry Bridger to be 19 years old. He helped them all and was well beloved by them all. He made a trip in 1892 to England to visit his mother. [John M. Gwin NOTE, 1999: Some quick math shows that Henry would have been perhaps a year older than Robert (or Charles Robert), who died at age seven of unnamed causes. Pure speculation allows that perhaps there had been plans to apprentice Robert, and at his death, Henry was semi-adopted by Robert's older brothers William (my gg-grandfather) and/or Louis as a "replacement". Or perhaps the relationship with Henry was established earlier and Henry and Robert actually knew each other. The number (3.15) before Henry's name was added by me in the speculation that perhaps he had even been adopted by the parents, John James Louis and Mary Miles Basset.]

Emma Basset Nitschke, my great grandmother, was the sister to your William Basset, father of Ida Eliza Basset Gwin. Therefore, I believe Emma Basset Nitschke was Ida's aunt. Some puzzles: Emma Maria Basset born May 13, 1824, was christened in Broadwater, England June 20, 1824. Christening record states daughter of James and Mary Basset of Worthing, England (milkman). The "milkman" conflicts with fam. info. as have James Basset was a "draper" gentlemen's tailor. He was a secretary in some Institute of Science in Worthing, England. When he left for America, was presented with a silver snuff-box. He left it to his namesake, Uncle Jim Basset.
