Some history of this page:  For some time, I'd been hearing about a Vardaman genealogist named J. H. "Jack" Vardaman of Alpharetta, Georgia, who "knows more about the Vardaman family than anyone else" but was not "on line".   I even wrote a snailmail letter to him but never mailed it, thinking he was probably too busy to send me anything, and besides, someone else had already sent me an online version of much of his work.  To make a long story short, Jack and I are second cousins, and while we'd been in contact by telephone and snailmail, in Jan 2002, we were able to complete a whirlwind tour of east-central Alabama!  He'd been trying unsuccessfully to make contact with the Gwin side of his family for some time.  He is a son of Jesse H. Vardaman, who was a son of Marshall E. and Clara "Odie" Vardaman, my paternal grandmother's brother and sister-in-law.  Much of the material below is being updated based on his contributions.

While talking to my father, Adrian Sutton Gwin (grandson of John Forsythe Vardaman, the only one of Edwy's and Lucinda's sons to survive the Civil War), in March 2000 (a year or so before Dad died), I mentioned that I had some new information on his grandfather's dad, Edwy Liles Vardaman, and I pronounced Edwy as I had always assumed it was pronounced, /ED-wee/.

He quickly corrected me, saying ED-WHY in a loud voice (because he was very hard of hearing).  "Edwy!  Grandmother spoke of him often, and she never called him anything but Mr. /ED-why Vardaman."

Lending perfect support to this pronunciation is Jack Vardaman's note on the 1840 census for Meriwether Co., GA, that "Edwy L. Vardaman is erroneously listed on this census as 'Edward Y. Vardaman'..."

So, cousins, meet the family of your ancestor, ED-why Liles Vardaman!          : - )

A synopsis of Edwy Liles Vardaman: An Analysis of Census Records
by Jesse H. (Jack) Vardaman, Jr., 17 Aug 2000

1810:  ELV, b. 2 Feb 1804 in Jefferson Co., GA, should be age 6, lvg. w/parents Thomas and Annie Vining, in Putnam Co., GA; however, 1810 Census records for GA and other states destroyed when British burned Washington, DC, in War of 1812.

1820:  ELV, age 16, at home w/ parents in Putnam Co., GA, one of two males listed in 16-18 age group.  But four other--unknown--males are shown living  there: two under age five and one each in 5-10 and 16-18 YOA gps., though ELV is only known son b. to Th. and An. V. before 1820.

1830:  ELV, 26, Meriwether Co., GA, m. (1825); he and wife Lucinda are the M and F in the 20-30 YOA gp.; had 3 dau. under 5 YOA: Mielda b. 1826, Minerva b. 1828, and Cynthia b. 1829; Mienda (Mielda's twin) d. as infant.

1840:  ELV listed in error as Edward Y. Vardaman [due, no doubt, to the pronunciation of his name: ED-why--see above] in Meriwether Co.; age 36 (in 30-40 gp.); LMV age 34, listed same gp.;  2 sons: John F. b. May 1835 in 5-10 gp. and Wm. S. b. Jun 1840 in 0-5 gp.; 7 dau.s: four in 10-15 gp: Mielda b. 1826, Mienda (Mielda's twin) d. as inf., Minerva b. 1828, and Cynthia b. 1829;  three in the 5-10 gp: Frances b. 1831, Mary B. b. 1832, and Nancy A. b. 1833; one in 0-5: Ziphia (Puss) b. 1836.

To the immediate right is my transcription of an obituary of Edwy L. Vardaman, an actual photo of which appears to its own right.  I don't know from what newspaper it came, but my grandmother--his granddaughter, Adrian Belle Vardaman Gwin--had it glued in her old scrapbook my own late father gave me in early 2000. In the photo, notice her handwriting in the right margin in blue pen: "My Grandfather".  Also notice that she used pencil to line out the 15 in the date of his death and to write in the correct 25 above it.

OBITUARY
DIED--At his residence, near Pinkneyville, in Cay (sic) county, Alabama, at 7 o'clock a. m., on the 15th (sic) day of July, 1879--EDWY L. VARDAMAN.

Deceased was born in Putnam county, Georgia, on the second day of February, A.D., 1804, and with his father moved to Upson county, where he married Lucinda Mauk, and afterward removed to Merriweather (sic) county, which he represented in the Georgia Legislature in 1847, and in the fall of 1848 he removed to Tallapoosa county, Alabama, and has lived in that vicinity from that time to his death.  His life was spent, chiefly in the service of his neighborhoods,--as he served them as Justice of the Peace for about twenty-four years.  His mind gave way with his body, and for the last five years, he has had health of neither mind or body; and has never turned himself in bed the last 18 weeks of his life.

He left his second wife, whom he married on the 4th day of July, 1864, and eight children--all grown.
He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and walked in accordance with his profession.

An Outline of the Known Family:

20.00--John Vardaman, b. unk.,possibly 1670-80 but prob. earlier, prob. in Sweden; may have been of German, Swedish, or Danish descent, as all these countries have frontage on the Baltic Sea; d. 1714 leaving one adult son who was already married and away from home and 3 minor children.

21.00--William Vardaman, Sr., "Old William", "William I" , prob. b. in Sweden ca. 1695-1700, since court records in 1758 list his age as "about sixty"; m1. 1720 in New Castle Co., DL to Magdalena Petersson--proven by church records; William I had moved from Delaware to Virginia by 1734 and many years later to Newberry Co., SC, (1766); he had four sons and an unknown number of daughters; (m2?). to an Elinor Herd/Heard--(suggested by some sources--currently moot); m.2( 3?) to Bridgit Tinkler (Jack's and my 5th great-grandmother); 4 sons

22.04--James Vardaman, b. unk.; d. 1797 (proven by estate papers); moved into SC with his parents in 1766; m1. Jack believes this first wife of James may have been Sabra Liles/Lyles for two reasons: (1) her married name is Vardaman, and from census records, she's the only possible person who could've been married to him; and (2) the name Liles is the middle name of Jack's and my gg-grandpa, Edwy Liles Vardaman (who would become Old William's g-grandson); Sabra was the mother of William's first two children and possibly the first three; (m2. Jane Johnson); seven children

23.02--Thomas Vardaman, b. ca.1777 in Dutch Fork, Newberry District, SC; d. 1857; m. in 1801 at about age 24 in Jefferson Co., GA, to Annie Vining (b.; d.; d/o Shadrach Vining and Phereby Ratcliffe); they moved around in GA and SC, finally settling in Coosa Co., AL, in 1836; nine children.

24.01--Edwy Liles Vardaman, b. 2 Feb 1804 in Putnam (or Jefferson?) Co., GA or b. in Newberry District, SC; d. 25 Jul 1879, age 75 (above obit. says 15 Jul, not 25); allegedly bd. with (first) wife at Smyrna Prim. Bapt. Ch. Cem., Coosa Co., AL (my Uncle James B. Gwin placed a small memorial to Edwy at the Vardaman plot in the Smyrna Cem., but neither Cousin Jack nor I have any proof of their burial there); m1. at age 19 in Upson Co., GA, 6 Jan 1824 (for 38 years) to Lucinda K. Mauk (b. 23 Mar 1806 in Wilkes Co., GA; d. Mar 1862  (or 17 Apr 1862); allegedly bd. with Edwy (see above); d/o Mathias Jackson Mauk, Jr., and Frances Lea); 13 children; 33 grandchildren (11 Kilpatricks, 3 Houses, 8 Adairs, 4 Vardamans, and 7 Lukers!); served as Justice of the Peace in Tallapoosa Co., AL, for 24 years following his move there in 1848 (which would have been until about 1872--about the time, according to the above obituary, of his mental health failure), then moved to Coosa Co. (I speculate that his son John Forsythe Vardaman moved him and his second wife there so he--i.e., JFV--could help take care of him/them.); m2. 4 Jul 1864 to Martha Conway; no children;

25.01--MiElda B. Vardaman, b. ca. 1827 in Putnam Co., GA, 16 Sep 1826 (twin) [listed as Mielda B., age 33, in the 3 Jul 1860 census of Beat No. 6, Tallapoosa Co., AL]; [listed as Mary V., age 43, in the 10 Aug 1870 census of New Market P. T. Kilpatrick, age 42, in the 3 Jul 1860 census of Beat No. 6, Tallapoosa Co., AL, b. in SC]; [listed as I. T., age 52, in the 10 Aug 1870 census of New Market P. The Kellyton Advertiser

J. F. VARDAMAN

Mr. J. F. Vardaman, who was buried at Smyrna Church last Thursday, July 19, was one of the most prominent men of Coosa county. He was born in Meriwether county, Georgia, in 1834. He came to Alabama when a young man, and was soon called off to the war where he served until its close. After the war, upon his return home, he was married to Miss Julia Flinn. He has been elected by the people of the county to many responsible offices. In the fall of 1902, while he held the office of County Superintendent of Education, he had an attack of rheumatism, which compelled him to resign his office. He went to Hot Springs, Ark., for relief. After treatment there he was apparently free from the disease, and upon his return home, while stopping over in Birmingham, in January 1903, he was stricken with paralysis.  From that time until his death he was not able to talk.  But he bore his suffering with patience and was always cheerful.  He was a good man, well liked by every one who knew him.  He leaves a wife, two sons, Mr. Marshall Vardman, of Goodwater, and Hon. John W. Vardaman, of LaFayette, two daughters, Miss Ada Vardaman, of Brierfield, and Mrs. T. J. Webb, of Kellyton, to mourn his loss.
We extend to the family our sympathy in this said bereavement.

[John M. Gwin Note: Above is my transcription of the
obituary, a photo of which appears at right, of John
Forsythe Vardaman of Coosa Co.   I found it in a scrap-
book belonging to my grandmother, Adabelle Varda-
man Gwin. In her pencilled hand at the top it says,

"The Kellyton Advertiser", and in the right margin,

in pen, also in her hand, it says, "my father."

Below the obituary, in my father's hand, is written,

"Edwy was my great-grandfather --J. F. was his son,
my grandfather; and Peter L. was my great-

This has to be our Israel Thomas Kilpatrick, even though his POB is listed as SC instead of TN, because his wife's name is similar to Mielda (and as the ink is slightly smeared, it is somewhat illegible, so it COULD have been Mielda), his age is about right, his children's first names and ages agree with the 1860 census, and because his father-in-law, Edwy, is living across town.

Alley's DOB and POB put the family's move from GA to AL sometime between March and November of 1850--if this is correct, that is!  In the 1860 record of this family (see below), it states that Alley was born in AL.

Somebody made a switch on us! in 1850, it was recorded that Ally had been born in GA; however, here it is recorded that she was born in AL. This means that the family's move to AL from GA could've taken place earlier than I surmised in my comments in the 1850 census above.

I'm not yet sure that this is our Edward and wife Mary Bruce. We'll record this census report, however, and see if it matches up with a known report later.
Hmmm. He does show up in 1870 as E. M., all else being quite equal. The only additional child is James, age 3 (b. ca. 1863).

Thomas Jefferson "Uncle Jeff" Webb. He owned a timbering business early on, as I recall Dad saying once, then later owned some sort of five and dime store in Alexander City.

My second cousin Jack Vardaman writes: "
I do know who his parents were (Charles David and Clarissa Carlisle Webb).  I should, as Clarissa Carlisle was the aunt of my grandmother, Odie Carlisle Vardaman, wife of Maggie's brother, Marshall E. Vardaman.  Clarissa was my great-great aunt.  Consequently, Jeff Webb was not only my great uncle by marriage but also my first cousin, twice removed.  Jeff Webb and my grandfather, M. E. Vardaman, were not only brothers-in-law but also first cousins.  As a young boy I can recall knowing Uncle Jeff personally.  My dad took us to visit his grandmother Julia and Aunt Maggie and Uncle Jeff Webb in Alexander City on several different occasions."

This of course means that Jeff and Maggie were also first cousins to each other.
