1. In Cahaba, the name of the gentleman who is the Maintenance Supervisor for the Old Cahawba site is Mr. Donald Harvell whose family is from the area. His mother's maiden name is Pugh.
2. My cousin Mr. Jack Vardaman* has a set of several estate documents--dated 17 Jul 1794 and witnessed by our ancestor Mr. James Vardaman--regarding the settlement of the estate of a Mr. Isaac Pugh of South Carolina.
3. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Annie Vining) Vardaman (m. ca. 1802-03) had a daughter Ms. Rachel Vardaman (their child #4) who m. in 1827 in Putnam Co., GA, Mr. Levi Johnson. RVJ and LJ had a daughter who married a Mr. Pugh.
4. On the 1880 census, Mrs. Rachel Vardaman Johnson (note 3 above) is living with her daughter Mrs. Edilda Pugh in the Reeltown area of Talapoosa Co., AL.

Pugh;*[Jack's note: Rachel Vardaman who married Levi Johnson: I have several items of information on this family but will just say that they had one daughter, Edilda Caroline Johnson who married James D. Pugh. This family lived in Tallapoosa County, AL. I believe that we can establish Rachel's age pretty well from census records. I have her on the 1850 census as 37; on the 1860 census as 47; on the 1870 census as 58 and on the 1880 census as 67. In view of the consistency of the census records, I believe that we can definitely establish her birth as occurring in 1812 or 1813 depending on just which month she was born. She died after 1880. Note that Rachel named one of her children after her sister. Edilda Johnson Pugh may not have liked her name very well as she is shown as Ellen C. Pugh on the 1880 census.
