Return to the Genealogy Home Page

New info, June 15, 2000:  For some time, I'd been hearing about a Vardaman genealogist named J. H. "Jack" Vardaman of Alpharetta, Georgia, who "knows more about the Vardaman family than anyone else" but was not "on line".   I even wrote a snailmail letter to him but never mailed it, thinking he was probably too busy to send me anything, and besides, someone else had already sent me an online version of much of his work.  To make a long story short, Jack and I are second cousins, and after many contacts by telephone and snailmail, we finally met in Birmingham, Al, in Jan 2002, and he served as my guide on a whirlwind tour of our eastern Alabama relatives old homes and cemeteries.    He'd been trying unsuccessfully to make contact with the Gwin side of his family for some time.  He is a son of Jesse H. Vardaman, who was a son of Marshall E. and Clara "Odie" Vardaman, my paternal grandmother's brother and sister-in-law.  I plan to update much of the material below based on his contributions.

More new info, June 19, 2000:  Another " new" cousin, Marshel Roy Cunningham  of Montevallo, AL,--e.mail him at GoneToAla@aol.com--is a several-great-grandson of MiElda and Israel.

June 3, 2002:  Cousin Wanda Lou Kilpatric Slack of Longmont, CO, recently e.mailed me these pictures and details (see letters below) on the William Lafayette Kilpatric family, and I added them to the page this week. And now, October 2005, after a long absence, she has added some corrections--good to visit with you again, Wanda!

Seeking someone with information or an opinion on James Kilpatrick who is on the Pike County Ga census for 1830 and 1840. I think he is the same James who is on the 1850 Tallapoosa County Census: James Kilpatrick age 54 born South Carolina and wife Elizabeth age 50 born South Carolina. On the1855 he is in same Beat as my ancestor Israel T Kilpatrick....

Israel T Kilpatrick born 1818 in South Carolina, came "as a youth" to Georgia; married 1842 in Meriwether County ( next to Pike) to MiElda Vardaman. Israel and MiElda's oldest son named James Edwy Kilpatrick...her father was Edwy ( correct spelling) Vardaman, so maybe James is named for his father also....I researched the Richard Kilpatrick in Meriwether who dies by 1850 and he doesn't seem to pan out on the census of 1820 and 1830 as having a boy who would be Israel's age, that is, born in 1818.

Any help with finding parents or siblings of my Israel Thomas or Thompson Kilpatrick appreciated. He moved his family to Madison County, Alabama, by 1870.

His children are: Caroline, James Edwy, Taylor, Alley, Frances Amanda, Mary Lenora, Thompson or Thomas Butler, Adora /Caledonia, William Lafayette, John, and Emma Eva.

20.00--John Vardaman, b. unk.,possibly 1670-80 but prob. earlier, prob. in Sweden; may have been of German, Swedish, or Danish descent, as all these countries have frontage on the Baltic Sea; d. 1714 leaving one adult son who was already married and away from home and 3 minor children.

21.00--William Vardaman, Sr., "Old William", "William I" , prob. b. in Sweden ca. 1695-1700, since court records in 1758 list his age as "about sixty"; m1. 1720 in New Castle Co., DL to Magdalena Petersson--proven by church records; William I had moved from Delaware to Virginia by 1734 and many years later to Newberry Co., SC, (1766); he had four sons and an unknown number of daughters as shown below.

22.04--James Vardaman, b. unk.; d. 1797 (proven by estate papers); moved into SC with his parents in 1766; m1. Jack believes this first wife of James may have been Sabra Liles/Lyles for two reasons: (1) her married name is Vardaman, and from census records, she's the only possible person who could've been married to him; and (2) the name Liles is the middle name of Jack's and my gg-grandpa, Edwy Liles Vardaman (who would become Old William's g-grandson); Sabra was the mother of William's first two children and possibly the first three; (m2. Jane Johnson); seven children

23.02--Thomas Vardaman, b. ca.1777 in Dutch Fork, Newberry District, SC; d. 1857; m. in 1801 at about age 24 in Jefferson Co., GA, to Annie Vining (b.; d.; d/o Shadrach Vining and Phereby Ratcliffe); they moved around in GA and SC, finally settling in Coosa Co., AL, in 1836; nine children.
24.01--Edwy Liles Vardaman, b. 2 Feb 1804 in GA or b. in Newberry District, SC; d. 25 Jul 1879; bd. with wife at Smyrna, Coosa Co., AL; m. 6 Jan 1825 to Lucinda K. Mauk (b.; d. Mar 1862 ; d/o Mathias Jackson Mauk, Jr., and Frances Lea); 13 children;  served as Justice of the Peace in Tallapoosa Co., AL, for 24 years following his move there in 1848 (which would have been until about 1872--about the time, according to the above obituary, of his mental health failure), then moved to Coosa Co. (I speculate that his son John Forsythe Vardaman moved him and his second wife there so he (JFV) could help take care of him/them.); m2. 4 Jul 1864 to Martha Conway; no children;

25.01--MiElda Vardaman, b. 16 Sep 1826 (twin); d. Jan 1884; bd. at Cumberland Concord Presbyterian Ch. Cem. at Hazel Green, Madison Co., AL; m. 22 Nov 1842 to Israel Thomas Kilpatrick  (b. 1818 in SC; d. after 1900, prob. in Madison Co., AL; bd. at Cumberland Concord Presbyterian Ch. Cem. at Hazel Green, Madison Co., AL); 11 children [Cousin Marshel Roy Cunningham sent her burial site data, and Cousin Wanda Slack concurs and adds that Israel is there, too.];

26.01--Minerva A. Caroline (or Carolina) "Callie" Kilpatrick, b. Mar 1843 in Meriwether Co., GA; d. unk.; m. 3 Aug 1866 in Madison Co., GA, to James W. Carter; 8 children; [Cousin Wanda Slack provided the number of children, adding that Minerva's father, Israel, is living with James and Minerva in the 1900 census.]

26.02--James Edwy Kilpatrick, b. 1846 in Meriwether Co., GA; d. unk., perhaps in TX; m. never; served as Private in CSA, Co. A, 63d AL Inf--Captured early, POW until paroled 4 May 1865 at Meridian, MS; no known children;

26.03--Zachary Taylor Kilpatrick, b. 1847-48 in Meriwether Co., GA; d. unk; bd. unk.; m. 25 Jan 1875 in Franklin Co., TN, to Emma Corn; unk. children;

26.04--Ailey (or Alley?) M. Kilpatrick, b. 1850 in Walnut Hill area near Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co., AL, where Israel had purchased a farm in 1849; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. 16 Mar 1870 in Frnaklin Co., TN, to John Turner; [Wanda Slack note: they went to northern California in early 1900's to work with her brother Thomas Butler Kilpatrick in mercantile stores he established there]; unk. children;

26.05--Frances Amanda Kilpatrick, b. unk.; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m.unk.; unk. children;  (Who is this person?  She appears in Marshel Roy's post, above, but does not appear in Wanda's list, below.)

26.06--Mary Lenora "Molly" Kilpatrick, b. 18 Aug 1852 in Walnut Hill area near Dadeville, Tallapoosa Co., AL, where Israel had purchased a farm in 1849; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. 30 Apr 1872 in Madison Co., AL, to Hiram Melvin Jones; unk. children;

If her POB is correct, the family arrived in Alabama after March of 1850, not 1849. But the 1860 census (below) records her as being the first of the children born in Alabama, so it is more likely correct, since it clearly states that the older children were born in Georgia.

This is my great-grandfather, John Forsythe Vardaman, who will marry Julia Ann Flynn upon his return from the long walk home from Virginia. He was with Lee at the surrender at Appomattox, having served there as a scribe who copied orders for each of the men surrendered for safe passage home. His friend John Lee was there as well, and since both walked back to Coosa Co., AL, from Appomattox, it makes sense that they walked together, especially since John had already married Julia's sister.

.......................................................................................................
Mieldah Vardaman Killpatrick, born September 26, 1826 in Putnam, Georgia.  Died Jan 22, 188, in Madison County, Alabama.  She and Israel are both buried in the Concord Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, address Hazelgreen, Alabama.  She has headstone, and there is a small stone there for Israel with his named spelled Issac and that he died in 1898.  This is not correct.  Israel was still living in the year 1900 and living with his eldest daughter Minerva Carolina Kilpatrick Carter as proven by the 1900 census, Madison County, Alabama.  I am still searching for Israel's death date!  (Wanda Lou)

Mieldah Vardaman Kilpatrick
Born September 26, 1826
The daughter of Edwy Liles Vardaman and Lucinda K. Mauk.  (I believe the Vardaman's have their records)

Israel and Mieldah's children in order of birth:

Minerva A. Carolina ("Callie) was born in March 1843 in Meriwether County, Georgia.  She married James W. Carter in Madison County, Georgia August 3, 1866.

James Edwy ("Bud") born in 1846 in Meriwether, County, Georgia - place and time of death still unknown.  James E. was a Private, Co. A, 63rd Ala. Inf'y in the Civil War.  He was captured early and spent the duration of the war in the Union prisoners camp.  He was paroled from May 4, 1865, at Meridan, Mississippi.  James never married and we believe that he may have died somewhere in Texas.  Still to be found.  (I am looking - Wanda Lou).

Zachary Taylor was born in 1847-48 in Meriwether County, Georgia.  He married Emma Corn in Franklin county, Tennessee on January 25, 1875.  I have not found them on census as yet, but am still looking.  Wanda Lou

Ailey M Kilpatrick was born in 1850 in the Walnut Hill area near Dadeville, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.  She married a John Turner in Franklin County, Tennessee on March 16, 1870.  I have not found census yet, am still looking.  I know that they went out to Northern California in the early 1900's to work with Ailey's brother Thomas Butler in Mercantile stores established by Thomas Butler.  I am still looking.  Wanda Lou

Amanda Frances  was born April 14, 1851 in the Walnut Hill area of Tallapoosa County, Alabama - near Dadeville, Alabama.  She married Zachary Taylor McCollum in Madison County, Alabama April 30, 1872.  She died either Ocotober 11 or 26 1942.  She is buried with her husband Zachary at the Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Hazel Green, Alabama. Alabama.  Zachary Taylor McCollum died April 29, 1926 and is buried beside his wife.

Mary Lenore ("Molly") Kilpatrick was born August 18, 1852, Walnut Hill District near Dadeville, Alabama, Tallapoosa, Alabama.  Mary married Hiram Melvin Jones in Madison County, Alabama on April 30, 1872.  Marshal Roy Cunningham has not given up children's names or death and burial of Hiram and Mary Lenore.  I will get it!! Wanda Lou.

Thomas Butler Kilpatrick was born May 3, 1853 in the Walnut Hill area near Dadeville, Alabama, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.  Thomas first married Rena Pitts on October 15, 1878 in Franklin County, Tennessee.  Rena died in 1898 and shortly thereafter, Thomas married Lurah True Sitton from Salem, Arkansas.  Thomas and his brother William Lafayette or Laffatte owned an operated a Mercantile in Fayetteville, Tennessee for many years before moving to West Plains, Missouri.  They owned and operated Mercantile stores in both Willow Springs and West Plains, Missouri.  I have all names of children and will list them at another date.  I also have pictures of family members - so let me know what you want and size, etc.  Wanda Lou

Aldona ("Donie") was born in 1855-56 in the Walnut Hill district near Dadeville, Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
Donie married Johnson Ventrice - no not where?  She was still living in 1932 when my great grandfather William Lafayette Kilpatrick died in 1932 in Valley Center, Kansas.  I am looking for her records.  Wanda Lou

William Lafayette (Laffette) Kilpatrick was born October 20, 1857, in the Walnut Hill District where Israel had purchased a farm in 1849, Tallapoosa, County, Alabama.
William married Mary Hannah Wilson September 2, 1879.  They divorced in 1893 and William Lafayette Married Maude A. Blakely from Iowa in 1895 in West Plains, Missouri.  William Lafayette died at home  at the age of 74 in Valley Center Kansas.  William is buried at the rose Hill Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.  His great granddaughter Wanda Lou Kilpatric this Month of May placed a stone with his name and particulars in the City Cemetery pf Willow Springs, Missouri where his son Alva Wilson Kilpatric and his wife Laura Edwin "Peach" Weatherford Kilpatric, grandparents of  Wanda Lou and her 9  brothers and sister, all still living this day May 22, 2002. are buried.  Wanda was saddened to find her great great grandfather lying alone in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas when she found his final resting place almost pushed aside under a large cedar tree in 1989.  May he rest in Peach with his loved ones in Willow Springs, Missouri.  I will have a more detailed outline of his life and his decedents when I get there!!!!!!Wanda Lou

John "M" or "T" Kilpatrick was born in 1859 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.  He was never married and only this past spring 2002 did I Wanda Lou find him in his final resting place.  When my grandfather William Lafayette died in Valley Center, Kansas, a John T. Kilpatrick was listed as still living in Lorenza, Crosby County, Texas.  My husband Robert E. Slack and myself, while coming home from Harlingen, Texas took the extra route to see if we could find information pertaining to John.  I will repeat the story later in my synopsis of the Kilpatrick clan!  WOW! what a find!  We did find John and his burial plot.  We preceded to make him a stone and built it right on his gravesite there at the Lorenza City Cemetery.  I scratched his vitals on the wet cement and sank red roses on the headstone.  When I find him, I said, "Well hello there John, I've been looking for you", he didn't say a word!  God rest his soul.  He died the year I was born in 1934.  Wanda Lou

It is my hope that you will be able to copy what I have here to the Israel and Mieldah's spot on the Website.  I will get together the children of the children of the children as I go along.  Hoping to see you in the year 2003 as the Vardaman's meet in Kentucky!!!!       --Wanda Lou Kilpatric Slack

Can't help it!  I am so impressed by all of this!  I wish I knew more about my great great-grandfather and mother.  How they lived, etc.  Jack Vardaman did take us to this place, and there was an old home with tin roof sitting by the road, but I know that was not the homesite.  No one seemed to live there but was storing something?  I sat on the porch and Bob took my picture.  I felt at home!
