|
[24.12]--Thomas F. Gwin?, b. 1831 in Dallas
County, AL |
[John Gwin Note: We
know that either the son listed as 4.08 above or this 12th child is Thomas F.
Gwin,
b. 1831 in Dallas Co., AL, a colonel in the CSA who married Mrs. Nancy (nee Holman) Reeves,
a widow, and lived in Arkansas.
We're just not sure in which place he goes in the birth order. If he
were born
before the 1830 census, he is #4.08 above and the youngest of 11
children; if he were born after the 1830 census, he goes here, the
youngest of twelve. Since he and his siblings were orphaned (and likely
split up) before 1840, he probably had no memories at all of his father
and probably very few of his mother, learning what he did from older
siblings or from whomever
it was who adopted him. Therefore, it could be that he did not know
about ALL
his siblings and only THOUGHT there were 11 children instead
of 12 (in which case he is this 12th child); on the other hand, perhaps
he DID know of all 11 and that there
were only 11 (in which case he is the third son listed above as #4.08).] |
Thirteen
Pieces of
Information
We Have
on William Arranged
Chronologically:
01.
1805--William
Gwin is first mentioned in an 1805 Wears Cove Baptist Church record in
Sevier County, TN, where he and his parents are granted a letter of
dismissal
(possibly to start as pastor at Tuckaleechee Cove in nearby Blount
Co.).
[If
my theory regarding his date of birth is right, William is about 15
years
old at this time and not yet married.]
[I have this data
on
another page and will transfer it here when I come across it again...]
02.
1808--Three
years later he is named as a witness in his sister's and
brother's-in-law
land grant assignment. [If my
theory
is right, William is about 18 years old at this time.]

David and Elizabeth moved to Indiana with Isham; John and Jane moved to
Dallas Co., Alabama, with his brother William
(above-named witness to the property sale and brother-in-law to David
Denton).]
03.
June
1813--Jan B. Thomas' transcription
shows
him in the minutes of the Millers Cove Baptist Church, Blount County,
Tennessee,
as joining the church with his wife, Susanah. [If
my theory is right, William is about 23 years old at this time.]

1815--Then they appear again in those
minutes as leaving the church. [If
my theory is right, William is about 25 years old at this time. Question:
Is
this when William moves to Alabama? We know that John and Jane Walker
Gwin,
who (I'm all but certain) is the brother of this William, will move
there
very soon, as their son Isom will be born there 17 Mar 1817. So do they
travel there together, leaving Blount Co. on or after 7 Oct 1815? I'm
betting
that's what we'll find out soon...]

12 Jan 1819--Marilyn
Davis Hahn's 1981 book, Old
Cahaba Land Office Records and Military Warrants, 1817-1853, reports
that a William Given (whom we
believe to be this William Gwin)
purchases land in Dallas Co., AL, Township 15, Range 7, eight days
before a Person Davis (whom we
believe to be the Gwins' scribe in Item 4 above) purchases land there
in T16, R8. By comparing the date above and the date in Item 4 above
(col. 2), one might say that the two Person Davises could not be the
same; however, we know that some people made land purchases from afar
(by mail? by proxy?), and this could certainly have been the case with
Person Davis.
[If
my theory is right, William is about 29 years old at this time.]
06.
10 Apr 1819--Hahn
again reports that a William Gwin (whom we believe to be
this William Gwin) purchases
land in Dallas Co., AL, Township 14, Range 9. [If
my theory is right, William is about 29 years old at this time.]
07.
1820--Next
he appears in the 1820 census of Dallas Co., Alabama with a wife and
seven
children--two sons and five daughters. [For
reference purposes, I've listed John Gwin's data as well.] [If
my theory is right, William is about 30 years old at this time.]

who will marry Roseanna "Roe" Carlisle Jones Wilson and become my

09.
1822--Jan
B. Thomas reports him as being in Alabama in 1822 as an heir at probate
to Kerranhappuch
Beard (Jan's research indicates that she is very
likely William's late mother-in-law, the mother of Susanna
Beard) at which the administrator is a Crowson's Cove
neighbor, Person Davis (whom
we believe to be the same Person Davis mentioned in items 4 and 5 above).
[If
my theory is right, William is about 32 years old at this time.]
[JMGwin Note: Person
Davis is one of the next-door neighbors to Susanah
Richardson
in Crowson's Cove 15 years earlier--see no. 2 above.]

William Gwin/Guin 1820 Dallas AL

Interested in
anybody who has information
on William
Guin who was on the 1820 Dallas Co. AL census. I think he
married
one of my Beard/Baird/Biard girls probably in Blount
Co. TN around 1800+/-. He is listed as receiving an equal
portion
of my ggggg-grandmother's estate in Dallas Co. AL in 1822 and
appears
to be present at the sale of her belongings. Two Gwin girls were said
to
be cousins to our Biards, one being Henrietta
Gwin who married John B. (Jack) Aiken, and the other
was Kerrenhappuch Gwin who may
have
first married a Noblett and then married Robert Prigmore
(Pridmore).
These two girls married in Limestone Co. AL where some of my
Biards
lived. I have been wondering if William Gwin might be related to Isham
(Isom) Gwin and/or John Gwin who may have also passed thru Blount
Co. TN and Dallas Co. AL around the same time period. Any
help
with this William Gwin would be appreciated. Where did he go after the
1820 census. I notice a younger William Gwin there by the 1850 census.

Probate, Kerranhappuch Beard/Baird
Posted by: Jan Thomas Date: June 28, 2000 at 21:00:09

Below is my
transcription of the probate records
of Kerranhappuch
Beard, wife of Henry Beard/Baird/Biard who seems to have traveled from
Buckingham Co. VA to Halifax Co. VA to Blount
Co. TN and finally passing away in the Dallas
Co. AL area. Some of the heirs listed confirm much of Maud
Baird Smith's guesses in The Baird Family book
printed
in 1928 and again in 1954.
I believe "Happy" Beard
was probably born around
1750
and is actually married to Henry Beard/Baird/Biard the 2nd. The first
Henry
Beard/Baird signed a deed in Goochland Co. VA in 1738. "Happy
Beard
is thought to be my ggggg-grandmother.
John Beard b.1780
d.1839, George Beard b.1777
d.1825,
and Archibald Beard d.1833 below lived in Limestone Co. AL in the
1820's
and 1830's; prior to that John lived in Bledsoe Co. TN and Blount
Co.
TN. Welcome Beard b.1788 below lived in Blount Co. TN and then
Monroe
& Bradley Co. TN.
Thomas Morrison
was married to Francis
Beard b.1796?
and lived in Blount & Monroe Co. TN; Aaron Waller (a
Baptist
preacher) seems to have married a Beard girl, and they lived in Blount
and Monroe Co. TN.
William
Gwin
was probably
the father of Henrietta Gwin who
married
John B. (Jack) Akin; Henrietta came to TX with her Biard cousins in
1846.
Person
Davis has a wife named Mary on census records in AL; I would
assume
he is married to a Beard girl as he has a daughter named Kerenhappuch
Davis, but his relationship is unidentified at this time.
Maud thought one of the
Beard girls married a John
Blair, but here on the probate records we see William Blair.
Welcome Beard
seems to have some relation
with
the surname Humphreys in Monroe Co. TN, but otherwise
the
surname is unknown as are the rest of the surnames.
Maud believed there
were three unknown daughters.
There
was also some question in her book regarding the Henry Beards. I assume
this is Henry Beard her son on the probate record. I think most of her
children would probably have been born between 1770 and 1800 in
Buckingham
Co. VA or Halifax Co. VA or Blount Co. TN.
So, it is with great
pleasure that I share this
with everyone,
and hope that it leads to many new discoveries. A special thanks to
Bruce
Baird Sr. for discovering and passing on the tip which led to this
discovery,
and to Jim Everett for sharing his Beard/Waller notes
with
me from Blount Co. TN.

1830--Eight
years later he appears in the 1830 census of Dallas Co., Alabama with a
wife and eleven children--three sons and eight daughters. [For
reference purposes, I've again listed John's data as well.] [If
my theory is right, William is about 40 years old at this time.]

*This William
Gwinn,
b. betw. 1790 and 1800, is very likely the older brother of my
ggg-grandpa
John Gwin. The evidence (if not proof) of this is listed in the
items of this chronology. Please see the table at the top of this page for
a more detailed accounting of William's andSusannah's children.
11.
12 May 1831--Hahn
again reports that a William Gwin
purchases 80 acres of land in Dallas Co., AL, known as the west half of
the southwest quarter of section 8, Township 15, Range 10. [If
my theory is right, William is about 41 years old at this time.]
According to my map of Dallas County, his land is located on the west
side of the Alabama River about a mile south of Cahawba. To get there
from Cahawba, leave the park by the main gate on County Rt. 2. Take the
first dirt road to the left due south. Follow this road about 1.5 miles
to the Matthews Cemetery which you should see on the left side of the
road. Walk across the road from the cemetery, then due south for about
200 yards. You should be standing approximately in the center of
the northern boundary of his land. Those 80 acres were in a rectangle a
quarter mile wide east to west and a half mile long north to south.
12.
16 Oct 1850--Cousin
Mike Walker found a William Gwin
(whom we believe POSSIBLY, MAYBE, SPECULATIVELY, IN THEORY, COULD be
the son of our William and Susanna) in the 1850 census of Macoupin Co.,
Illinois. [John M. Gwin Note:
A photo of the 1850 census page where Cousin
Mike Walker found this William is located several clicks below.
Mike suggests (and I concur) that the William on line 37 could be the
firstborn son of William and Susanna for at least the following six
reasons:
(1) his age, 38, is right, according to
the above-referenced 1830 census;
(2) his name is right (e.g., to be
a "William,
Jr.");
(3) his state of birth, Tennessee, is right;
(4) his current place of residence
would make sense if, for example, he had decided to "agree with Grandpa
Isham and move north to avoid his dad's (and uncle John's) attraction
to slavery;
(5) his children's places of birth
all fit; and
(6) we still don't yet know if Darlene Almer's
information is correct (i.e., that this William came from
North Carolina and is the son of Elias
Gwin, which data, she told me on 20 Jan 2007,
was given to her by the Weatherford family). Of course, if the Weatherfords are right,
then Mike's theory is moot, and we're back to square one in the search
for this son of of William and Susanna Gwin. But Darlene wasn't
sure there was any hard documentation for this William being Elias'
son, so the theory still stands while she investigates her material
further.
There
are indeed, however, at
least three
items that seem to support Darlene's
information:
(1)
the Weatherford family must
have some good reasons for their claims and should get the benefit of
the doubt;
(2) the name of William's and
Jane's son is Elias,
making him named for
his grandfather; and
(3) the presence of the George
Gwin family two doors away from this
William; that close proximity suggests that George and William are
related, yet we have no idea who these people are; their places of birth don't fit our
theory; they fit nowhere
in our William's family but clearly could
fit Darlene's.
Nevertheless, Mike's theory
seems plausible to me, and I think we should continue to pursue it.
Meanwhile, I have
transcribed
the GWIN entries on the following page from that
16 Oct 1850
U.S. Census
of Macoupin Co., IL,
to allow web
searchers to find these
names. Please
forgive the following strikethrough lines and underlines; I put them
there in error and am still trying to figure out how to delete them.]

This
is the William Gwin (Jr.--if Mike's
right) whom Mike
Walker
has theorized could be the son of William and Susanna Gwin (and grandson
of Isham and Mary C. Gwin) as explained above. His estimated
year of birth,
1812, is the same year John Gwin and Jane Walker married and the year
before
our William and Susanna (theoretical
parents to this William) joined the Miller's Cove Baptist
Church (see
item #3 above). |

Jane
evidently married William in the
early 1830's,
no doubt in Alabama (as per her
children's POB). If Rebecca is their firstborn, Jane would've
been
about 20 when Rebecca was born and therefore about 19 when she and
William married (ca.
1832). |

And voila, the 6 Jul 1860 census results of Twp. 9, Rng. 7, Macoupin

Redfield Herald --
November 1906
- February 1907
The Redfield
Herald of Bourbon County, KS,
was a
weekly newspaper. The first issue, dated April 8, 1905, was published
on
Saturdays, with W. E. Stockmyer [referred to as Edd], as Editor. In
October
1905, when Mr. and Mrs. Stockmyer left Kansas for New Mexico,
publication
changed from Saturdays to Fridays and J. Frank Pool replaced Mr.
Stockmyer
as Editor. At that point, the paper was considerably expanded; in
addition
to community news, coverage also included courthouse news and property
transfers/deeds. Another editorial change occurred in October 1906 when
Mr. Pool retired and Harry E. Luman became Editor. These extracts have
been copied as accurately as possible, but errors may still occur.
Minor
printing errors have been corrected, but otherwise the information is
presented
as it originally appeared. Please consult the individual reel to verify
an item. I do not have any further information about these individuals
or families. Contributed by Ellen Knowles Bisson

13. 1890--In his
book, Southern Arkansas Biographical
and Historical Memoirs, the unknown author thereof lists Col. Thomas F. Gwinn, b. 1831 in
Dallas Co., AL, as the son of William
and Susan Beard Gwinn,
with his paternal grandfather being Isham Gwin. [John
M. Gwin Note: Jan Thomas found this on Ancestry.com in May 2007. We're
convinced this is our William's and Susana's (note her maiden name!)
son. There are, however, four
discrepancies of note: William and Susan are listed as natives
of Alabama (not Tennessee); Isham's place of birth is listed as
Ohio (not Virginia), with his place of death being Alabama (not
Indiana); and William and Susan are said to have had only 11
children--3 sons and 8 daughters (not 12--4 sons and 8 daughters).
Nevertheless, because Thomas was only two and six years of
age, respectively, when his dad and mom died, there is a lot of room
for error on Thomas' part, who almost certainly had to rely on at least
second-hand and at best somewhat old (and evidently sometimes
incorrect)
information. My transcription of the text of this article follows.]
From "History of Arkansas" in Southern Arkansas
Biographical and Historical Memoirs, 1890, p. 224
discovered (on Ancestry.com) and sent in by Jan Thomas in May 2007
(color and other emphasis by
John Gwin--RED = confirming data; GREEN = disputed data--see above):
Col. Thomas F. Gwinn,
farmer and notary public, Ben Lomond, Ark. Of the many
thoroughgoing
and enterprising sons of toil now residing in Sevier County [AR], none
are
more deserving of mention than Col. Thomas F. Gwinn, who was born in Dallas
County, Ala., in 1831. His parents, William and Susan
(Beard) Gwinn, were
natives of Alabama, where
they were married and
spent their entire lives,
the father dying in 1833 and
mother in 1837.
The father was a farmer, and also followed merchandising for many
years. The paternal grandfather, Isham Gwinn,
was born in the Buckeye State,
and was of Irish descent. He
died in Alabama. The maternal grandfather, John Beard, a
native of Tennessee
and of English descent, also died in Alabama.
Col. Thomas F. Gwinn, the youngest of eleven
children--three
sons and eight daughters--, divided his time in early life
between
assisting on the farm and in attending the common schools, where he
received a good practical education. He then attended college at Elton
and Tuscaloosa, and afterward taught school for twenty years. He was
also a merchant, and sold books, etc. In 1856 he went to Bossier
Parish, La., spent two years there, and then went to Southwestern
Arkansas, where he has lived in Lafayette, Hempstead, Little River, and
Sevier Counties.
In 1861 he joined Company E, Eleventh Arkansas
Infantry, and spent the first year in Missouri and Kentucky. He was
captured at Island No. 10, and spent about seven months in prison at
Camp Douglas, Chicago, Ill. After being released he served in the
mounted infantry, and was judge advocate and postmaster of the
regiment, operating in Louisiana and Mississippi. He surrendered
at
Lewisville, Ark.
In 1866 he was married in Little River County,
to
Mrs. Nancy Reeves, a native of Missouri, born in 1822, and the daughter
of James and Rebecca Hohman [Holman],
who were born respectively in Kentucky and
Maryland. In 1828 her parents came to Hempstead County, Ark, and
from
there moved to Sevier County, where they remained until 1843, and then
moved to Paris, Tex. There Mrs. Hohman [Holman] died in 1857, and Mr.
Hohman [Holman] in
1876, at the age of ninety-six years. He once represented
Hempstead
County in the Legislature. By her first husband, R. V. R. Green,
Mrs.
Gwinn had one daughter, Catherine, who is the wife of B. F. Forney, an
attorney at Hope.
Since 1872, Col. Gwinn has lived in Sevier
County,
where he has a good farm of 160 acres near Ben Lomond. In 1874
and
1875 he was superintendent of public instruction of Sevier County, and
afterward held the position of justice of the peace for four
years. He
was once special deputy of the Grange, and since 1887 he has been
notary public. In politics he is strictly Democratic, and his
first
presidential vote was cast for Franklin Pierce in 1852. He has
been a
member of the A. G. & A. M. since 1861, but is now
non-affiliating. He has been a Royal Arch Mason since 1863, the
Chapter being in Colunbia County. Mrs. Gwinn is a member of the
Presbyterian Church.

also sent me this article she found in a Rootsweb search:
William T. Holman -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~arlittle/bios.html
The
occupation which this gentleman now follows has received his
attention
the greater part of his life, and it is but truth to say that in it he
is
thoroughly posted and well informed, and his labors in that direction
have
contributed very materially to the reputation Little River County
enjoys
as a rich farming region. He was born in Madison Co., Mo., August 9,
1815,
the second of ten children reared to maturity by James and Rebecca Tong
Holman. The former was born in Kentucky in 1781 and departed this life
in
Texas in his ninety-eighth year. In early life he emigrated to Madison
County, Mo.,
where he resided until 1821, when he moved to Hempstead County, Ark.,
and
there made his home for two years, subsequently coming to Sevier
County.
He was among the earliest settlers of this county and took a prominent
part in its affairs, representing it one term in the State Legislature.
His first marriage was consummated in Kentucky, Miss Elizabeth McNeil
becoming
his wife, and they became the parents of two children. After her death
he
married Miss Rebecca Tong, a native of Maryland, who passed to her
final
home in Paris, Tex., about 1858. Of the ten children born to this last
marriage,
six are still living: Emily (widow of Henry K. Brown), William T., Nancy
(wife of Thomas Guinn, a resident of Sevier
County), Ira N. ( a resident
of California), Daniel ( a resident of Sevier County, Ark.) and Susan
(now
the widow of Lewis M. Schrack, who makes her home in California).
William
T. Holman was nine years of age when his parents immigrated from
Missouri,
and he grew to manhood in what is now Sevier County, Ark., obtaining
his
education in the common schools. His marriage to Miss Mary Stewart of
Hempstead
County was consummated in 1841, and in 1848 she passed to her final
home,
and Henry B. Holman, now the Sheriff of Hempstead County, is the only
survivor
of two children born to this marriage. In 1849 Mr. Holman crossed the
plains
to California and was there engaged in mining and farming until 1856
when
he came to this county, and here he has resided ever since. The same
year
as his arrival in this county, Miss Eliza Fuquay, a native of Hempstead
County, Ark., and the daughter of Thomas W. and Delia (Brown) Fuquay,
became
his wife. Her father, a minister of the Presbyterian persuasion was of
French
extraction and claimed Kentucky as his birthplace. Early in life he
moved
to the Indian Territory, coming thence, in 1828, to Hempstead County,
Ark.,
and later settling in Sevier County, same State, where he passed from
life
in 1859. His wife was Virginian by birth and died in September 1886 at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. Holman, with whom she had spent her last
days. To the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Holman have been born nine
children--four sons and five daughters: Adelaide (wife of N. T.
Richmond),
James
T., Mary J. (deceased), Edgar W., William L., Lucy, Frances, Lloyd C.,
and
Elise. Mr. Holman has not spent his life in idleness as his fine farms lying
three miles northwest of Rocky Comfort and about one and one-half miles
from Indian Territory will show, and he devotes his attention to
cultivating
250 acres of the 720 acres which this tract contains. During the late
war
he raised a company (in 1863) of which he was captain and served as
such
until the surrender. In 1868 he was chosen Representative of Sevier
County
and served as such very creditably for two years during which time
Little
River County was formed from a portion of Sevier and Hempstead
Counties.
His first presidential vote was cast for Grover Cleveland. Mrs. Holman
is
a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Jan Thomas
writes that Maud Baird Smith (in her book The Baird Family)
says that this is John B. "Jack" Aikin,
b. 1810 in SC. She says he died in 1899 near Marshall, TX; however, Jan
says this is the only census in which she's been able to find him. Jan
quotes Maud as saying that Jack married Henrietta Gwin who,
Jan speculates, is a daughter of William Gwin and Susanna Beard. She
reports that Jack is a brother to Alexander
Aikin. I have no reason to
doubt any of this and believe, with Jan, that this is one of William's
and Susannah's kids.

First
of all, if you're using Ancestry.com
to find these folks, be aware that they mistranscribe the last name as
"Beamore", for Pete's sake.
Jan Thomas sent me all the following information:
Robert Kyle Prigmore, b. 1808 in
Limestone Co., AL, was the first white child born in [what would become] that state; he
died in 1864 in either TN or Bossier Parish, LA; m1. on 7 Jul 1836 to Alice Jane Maples (b. 6 Feb 1814 in
McMinn Co., TN; d. 15 Dec 1839 in TN); two ch.: Wm. Maples Prigmore (b. 1837 in
Limestone Co., AL) and Alice
Elizabeth Prigmore (b. 1839 in Limestone Co.,
AL; d. 1933; m. Mr. Sugg);
RKP m2. 29 Oct 1842 to Karenhappuch (nee Gwin) Noblett (b. 1802

This
is said to be Karenhappuch Gwin [the widow Noblett] (b. 1802--sic--in TN; d. 1866 in Limestone
Co. AL); she is no doubt named for her maternal grandmother,
Karenhappuch Beard (see item 9 in the chronology above).
If this is indeed the oldest daughter of William and Susanna Beard
Gwin--and I
believe that she is--I have to agree with her age in this 1850
census which places her DOB at ca. 1812, not 1802, because we know that
Wm. was still single in 1805 and (probably also in) 1808; the first we
see of Susannah is in 1813 (see items
1-3 in the chronology above). Again, I have
no reason to doubt any of this (except the 1802 DOB) and believe, with
Jan, that this is one of William's and Susannah's kids. |

I
have a strong feeling that this census taker erred, at least in the
last two columns--perhaps he mistranscribed his own notes--we don't
know. Nevertheless, we do know that Thomas F. Gwin was born in Alabama
and that his wife Nancy, the widow Green (nee Hohman), was born in
Missouri. It is also unimaginable that a school teacher's wife, much
less the school teacher himself, would not be able to read or write!
The listed occupation of school teacher, however, does concur with the
above book article's information.

Ancestry.com mistranscribed the surname
as GUIRM, which is the reason
why it was almost impossible to find the family using that program. (I
did an Ancestry search of the entire county and found him that way.)
Looking at the original document verifies that the last name was indeed
recorded as GUINN.
The
baby of the family, Thomas F. Gwin was orphaned by the age of six
(his dad, William, died when he was only 2). So it is very
understandable that he had no first-hand knowledge of where his
parents--much less his grandparents--were born. The facts are that his
father, William Gwin, was born, raised, and married in Tennessee
(possibly he was born in VA just prior to the move to TN), and his
mother, Susan Beard, was at least married there and probably born and
raised there as well. His paternal grandparents, Isham Gwin and Mary
Canterbury, were both born, raised, and married in VA, moved to TN just
before or just after William was born, and moved to IN where they
finished their lives and are buried. The book article above states that
Thomas believed his grandpa Isham was from OH, and that is likely what
Thomas told this census taker as well, who may have mistaken his
statement for his father's birthplace instead.

John,
Lookin good! I haven't had the chance to do much geneology lately,
but when I do one of my bizarre searches through google, I always wind
up on one of your web pages. You are doing an excellent job. Did I send
you the Millers Cove Baptist Church information on William Gwin? I'll
attach
it to the e-mail, and if I hadn't already sent it to you, I apologize.
I published a book when I transcribed the church records. It seems that
William Guinn and his wife Susanna joined church in Blount Co. in June
1813 and left Blount Co. (Sevier Co.?) Oct. 1815. Mary and Person Davis
have no dates shown for being received or dismissed, although Person
Davis
was ordered to write some of the dismission letters. See the Index for
the dates, and see the MILLERS COVE BAPTIST CHURCH.doc to see the
actual
reference. Thought you might want to add some of the Millers Cove info
about William's whereabouts to your web site.
I noticed on one of your web pages that Archibald Beard joined
the church
in Sevier Co. Did you record anything further on him at that church? Or
do you have access to those records? I would be interested in any
Beard/Baird
names that might also be in those records. If you don't have access to
them, can you give me the location to see about an interlibrary loan?

The following is taken, with the author's permission, from her book:
MILLERS COVE BAPTIST
CHURCH
MINUTES,
WALLAND, BLOUNT CO., TN
1812 to 1824
Transcribed from microfilm available at the Library of Virginia
and the McClung Library in Tennessee.
Transcribed 2002 by:
Jan Biard Thomas
Please email her for current prices on a copy of her book at
janthomasatcebridgedotnet
Transcriber's notes:
Although these church minutes reveal some personal detail
about
our ancestors' lives, they also provide a valuable tool in tracing our
genealogical history. The dates for joining the Church, and the dates
for
letters of dismission are very useful in pinpointing our ancestors'
migration,
and in a few instances unknown spouses' first names may be revealed.
This
may be very useful to some families from the Blount Co., Tennessee,
area
since there are no census records for the time period 1812 to
1824.
There are more minutes books included on the Millers Cove Baptist
Church
of Christ microfilm, which cover the years 1824 well into the 1880's. I
have included a second membership list from the second minutes book;
however,
I did not include the names in the index for this book. Please consult
the original microfilm to resolve discrepancies.
Symbols:
ss--Replaces old style cursive "f" or "fs".
…--Represents illegible or missing text.

B, Br, Bro and Bor--Represents religious "Brother".
My particular interest in these church records revolves around the
Biard
family, specifically Kerranhappuch Biard and her husband Henry
Biard, and the related families of Waller, Davis, Morrison, Guin,
and Blair. Henry Beard, Baird, Biard, etc. . . . can be found
in records as early as 1738 in the counties of Goochland, Albemarle,
and
Buckingham, Virginia. Henry Beard's first known children are Hardiman
b.1734,
Edmund b.1736, John b.1739, Judith b.1742, and Ann b.1747. In 1773
there
are two Henry Bairds on the Buckingham County tithe lists, one being
tithed
as a dependant of the other along with dependants Archibald Baird and
John
Taylor. In 1774 there is only one Henry Baird on Buckingham county
tithe
lists, and the dependants are tithed separately. It is not known if the
second Henry Baird mentioned is son to the first or grandson to the
first.
Henry #2 and Archibald were probably born between 1748 and 1752, and
grandsons
named Henrys could have been born around 1752 and later. The Hardimans
are adjacent landowners to Henry Baird, and some of the Hardiman men
married
Taylor girls. It seems likely but not proven that we are related to
these
Hardimans and Taylors. In 1783/84 Henry Baird "of Buckingham" has land
deeds in Halifax County, Virginia. By 1795 he sells all of his land in
Halifax and his estate is mentioned on tax records. Kerranhappuch
is the wife of Henry Baird of Halifax county Virginia and her name is
found
on one of their deeds there, giving up her right to dower. To confuse
matters,
there are no taxed Henry Bairds in Buckingham from 1783 to 1795 and
then
a Henry Baird is taxed in Buckingham County, Virginia, in 1795 and
forward.
Henry and Hardiman Baird also have land in Clark County, Kentucky,
being
sold for taxes in 1798. Hardiman Baird died in Bath County, Kentucky,
in
the very early 1800's and left descendants there. Archibald Baird died
in Buckingham County, Virginia, around 1809. By 1795/1800 we find most
of Kerranhappuch Baird's family in Tennessee, in the counties of Sevier,
Blount, Monroe, Polk, Bedford, and White. I am purposely being a
little
vague in order to not print anything that is untrue . . . but it is my
assumption that the Henry Baird listed in these church minutes is not
Kerranhappuch's
husband, but her son and his wife Jenny, and that her husband had
predeceased
her, thus the existence of her probate records. I found her probate
records
in Dallas County, Alabama, and have included a copy at the end of this
book, in hopes that it might lead to new discoveries.

Hey John,
Could this
William
Gwin be the missing first child of William and Susanah?
Yes, I think it's
possible;
this William is born ca. 1812, putting him in the correct range
(1810-1815).
If he is, then this opens up another place to look for William and
Susannah
as well--Illinois! -- John

Jeanne,
I was looking at the 1850 Macoupin Co. census,
where
there is a Rebecca Gwin, b. 1833 in AL, but her parents are William
Gwin b. 1812 in TN and Jane M. Gwin b 1813 in NC. Her
younger brothers
James H., Elias, and William F., and younger sister
Tabby, were all b.
in IL. Is this your Rebecca Gwin?

Hi, Mike;
I have a little GWIN info. One
of Patton/Payton WALKER's
sons, Manoah WALKER, b. Jan 1832 in IL, m. 5 Feb 1852 in Macon
Co.,
IL, to Rebecca L. GWIN (b. Jan 1834 in AL. [I don't
know why Alabama---her
parents were William F. GWIN, b. in IL, and Jane M., nee unk., b. in
NC]) I
have more info on the GWINS and the names, etc., of Manoah &
Rebecca's
kids. Let me know what you're interested in. (I've also seen the
Hopewell
Church item. My WALKER's also intermarried with the
LEMAY's. Genetta LEMAY
was the sister of Martha WALKER. Their maiden name was HUDDLESTON.)

Subject: Patton Walker Query
I saw your post in
Rootsweb concerning Patton Walker. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/queries/query019.htm
I have no idea whether I am related to him (most likely not, I think)
but
I have to check. I am also related to the Gwin family. They all lived
in
Martin and Orange Co's Indiana in the 1820-1860 or so time frame, and
came
there from Tennessee.
At Hopewell
Church in Macoupin Co., IL, along with your
relative Patton Walker, there is an early member named Gwin.
So I have to see if there is a line of my Walkers and Gwins in that
timeframe
and location.
What piqued my
interest is this listing on http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/FamHist-Macoupin.html
HOPEWELL
Hopewell Church was organized August 6, 1831, at
the
home of Brother Joseph Hilyard, by the following six members, viz.,
Elder
Pleasant Lemay, Genetta Lemay, Patton Walker, Martha Walker, John Allen
and Joseph Hilyard. The presbytery consisted of Elders John Morris,
Alexander
Conlee and William Jones, and Brother David Gimblin. It was the first
church
in Gillespie township.
Elder Lemay was
chosen pastor in September 1831, and continued
in that office until his death in 1845. He was followed by Elders
William
F. Jerrell, David Gimblin, G. W. Jones, W. I. Dobbs, A. J. Witty, and
J.
A. Modlin.
Hopewell Church
first joined the Illinois Association.
In 1834, the church united with the Apple Creek Association. Hopewell
Church
was one of the churches dismissed from the Apple Creek Association,
which
organized the Concord Association in November 1838.
In April 1836, the
church granted "a request from the
Otter Fork to send our ministerial aid to assist in constituting them
into
a church, if found in order, on the last Saturday in April and first
Sunday
in May." In 1838, the church dismissed six members to organize Sugar
Creek
Church. In February 1852 the church sent ordained help to constitute
brethren
living on Cahokia into a church.
In May 1835, the
church agreed to build a meeting house.
In May 1851, the church appointed a committee of three "as a building
or
repairing committee, for to build or repair the meeting house." In
April
1852, the church requested a deed to be obtained for the one acre of
land
on which the meeting house stands. No other mention of the site, or
description
of the meeting house, is given. The church was apparently located in
Gillespie
township, on Spanish Needle Prairie, and near the Wheeler Cemetery. A
photo
of the meeting house has not been found.

In
May 2007, Jan Thomas found Thomas F. Gwin, son of William and Susan and
grandson of Isham. We also learned that William and Susan died in 1833
and 1837, respectively, in AL, and that Susan's maiden name was
Beard.

Hi John,
Haven't talked to you in a while. I have still been wondering
where William Gwinn's family went after he died.
On the 1840 census
there should be some Gwinn kids living with somebody.
-----I found this female
S. Gwinn
in the 1840
Lauderdale Co.
census with 4 kids. Do you know who she is?
-----I also found an Alabama Land Record dated 8/1/1849 for
Susan Gewin at the
Tuscaloosa Co. Land Office.
-----On the 1840
Tuscaloosa Co.
census there are
Asa Guin and
Holden Guin and some
Gunns who could be Guins.
-----On the Franklin Co., AL 1840 census there is a
Poarson Guinn (could be Pearson or
Person Guinn) who could be named after Person Davis; also there is a
Wm. Guinn on that census.
-----In
Talladega Co., AL,
1840 census there is an
Iversor R.
Guinn. That is where Person Davis's family moved.
-----This I think could be important. I think
Thomas F. Gwinn, who was the son of
William Gwinn and Susanna Beard of Dallas Co., AL, is on the
Chickasaw Co., Mississippi, 1850
census, 17 years old, living in the house of James & Rebecca
Baal. Interestingly, just 3 houses above, is
Samuel Goin, 35 yrs old, b.TN, with
his wife
Mary and 5 kids ages
11, 9, 7, 3, and 8/12, the 11 year old born in AL, the rest born
in Miss., indicating a move around 1840 to Mississippi. Listed in
Samuel Goin's house at the very bottom is
Catharine Goin, 14 yrs old, b.
TX. Now, I think it would be unusual to list their oldest
daughter last--usually that would indicate a servant, boarder, or
niece--and her birthplace is different from the rest. (The
households in between Samuel Goin and Thomas Goin are
George Neely and
John L. Laughlin, just in case those
names mean anything to you.)
I don't know if there is any correlation to any of these people
and our Guins; just wondering if you had already explored any of them.

Yes,
that is interesting. That would explain why Will and Susanna are in
Alabama in 1820 and 1830 but not in 1840. Of course, we now know that
Will and Susan are both dead before 1840, but their kids wouldn't be,
so Sanuel could indeed be one of them.

record
Bill & John,
I'm not sure if this is our Thomas
F.
Gwinn tombstone inscription (see below), but it's close,
and
there aren't a lot of Thomas F. Gwinn's running around in Sevier Co.
Arkansas that are in this age group, basically just him. The
death date of 1902 is about right because I have him on the 1900
census, but his widow is on the 1910 census. It doesn't mention
that he is a Col., but I still think it's a pretty close match.
His birthdate seems to fluctuate on census records, so maybe somebody
misread the year on the tombstone, maybe instead of 1822 it is 1827,
but the census & the tombstone say April. Maybe his wife
wanted him to appear to be older than she was (you know that old
robbing the cradle thing). There might be some existing
obituaries in 1902 that could
shed some more light on who his relatives
were.
Also, the 80 acres that William Gwinn
bought in Dallas Co.
AL in 1831, was sold
in 1832, so it is
possible that they moved to
another county in Alabama before he died in 1833.
Jan
Thomas Gwinn is on the Sevier Co. ARK census, Ben Lomond District, b.

So. It appears that Thomas believed his dad was born in AL right up to

land records & notes
Penny, This is what I had on the KY land. I think when it was
sold, it was in Clark Co., KY. Clark Co. was formed in 1792 from
Bourbon and Fayette Co., KY. Bourbon was formed in 1785 from
Fayette. Fayette was formed in 1780 from Kentucky Co. VA and the
county seat was Lexington. So if they got the land in 1782 it was
probably in Fayette Co., KY which was just two years earlier known as
Kentucky Co, Virginia and the county seat was Lexington. That is
probably the note about Lexington that you are remembering. In
1795 Hardiman, Henry and Samuel Beard/Baird are on the Lincoln Co. KY
census which was probably reconstructed from tax records. I've included
the Buckingham & Halifx PPT's and tithes (below) in this e-mail to
keep it all together. Lastly, I copied an excel file I made
trying to figure out who was how old and when. You may find it
not helpful or confusing. It's a table with columns of the
persons' initials and rows of their ages for each year finding their
birth years based upon the year they began being tithed. When I
made it, I thought maybe I could rule out which Henry (what
generation) was where based upon their ages. The column headings
were HB0 that's Henry Baird generation 0. HBw0 is Henry Baird's
wife generation 0. HdB1 would be Hardiman Baird 1st generation
after Henry. Then Hardiman's kids would be BB2 Baker Beard
generation #2 after Henry, etc. Then I can't really remember why
I put a's and b's and c's, but I think it was because there were to
many HB's and JB's, so I labeled them as a, b, or c to distinguish them
and used them on their children's names as well. Probably there's
a better way to do this, but... I'm not sure if I ever finished
this list, and you may not find it helpful, but if I could incorporate
where they were into the table, it makes a very good time line, and
where the relatives were in comparison to one another, when they
probably married, when they had to have been dead by, etc.

1764 Buckingham Co. Tithe List (White Tithes, Acres, #carriages)
Henry Beard and John Beard 2:400:0
Hardiman Beard 1:0:0
Henry and John and Hardiman are all born before 1743, but Hardiman has
no kids showing born before 1743.
I’m assuming this is Henry Beard #1 b.<1714, son John Beard b.1739
& son Hardiman Beard b.1734.
Where is Edmund b.1736? This is not a complete tithe list, only the
first few letters of the alphabet are in existance, so it’s possible he
was living on somebody elses property, or that he had moved to another
county. It’s interesting that Henry Baird #1 gave his son Edmund 400
acres in 1759 by Albemarle Co. deed records, and that is exactly the
amount Henry and John are tithed for. It’s possible Edmund died and the
land reverted back to his father, but it’s technically impossible for
Henry and John to be Edmunds sons because they have to be born prior to
1743 and he was born 1736. Maybe he just never accepted the gift of the
land or sold it back to his father, or died between 1761 and 1764.
1773 Buckingham Co. Tithe List (White Tithes)
Henry Baird (Archibald Baird, Henry Baird, John Taylor) 4
John Baird 1
Henry Baird "the father" is tithed for 2 of his +21 year old children
and a helper or son in law. That would mean Henry Baird and Archibald
Baird are born before 1752, but after 1743. Because there is a family
bible in existance that contains Henry Baird #1’s childrens births
through 1747 and they are not in it, I am going to assume that they are
born after 1747 but before 1752, possibly by a 2nd wife.
Where was Hardiman in 1773? Could Henry be a nickname for Hardiman?
1774 Buckingham Co. Tithe List (White Tithes)
Archibald Baird 1
Hardeman Baird 1
Henry Baird 1
Archibald, Hardeman, and Henry all tithed on their own. I’m going to
assume that this is Henry Baird #2 and that Henry Baird #1 may have
died between 1773/1774 being about 60-70 years old. Archibald Hardeman
and Henry do not have any children 21+ or born before 1753. Hardiman
Baird is believed to have married in 1764 which would probably make us
begin to see his 21+ children around 1785. Archibald is thought to have
married around 1773, so we would expect to see his children begin to
appear by 1794. If Henry is born 1747-52, we could begin to see his 21+
children by as early as 1788, but he appears to be in Halifax Co. VA at
that time, so I don’t think we’ll see his kids here in Buckingham.
Where was John in 1774?
Buck Co. PPT & Land Tax, reel # 50, 51, & 64 (still need reel

Depending on the different tax collectors, their lists included
slightly different headings or was left blank, so I’ve adjusted for
that by adding (-). For example, some lists included slaves +16 years
and total slaves, some lists included slaves –16 years and total
slaves, so I’ve added all three headings and added a – if that field
wasn’t on that list. If I forgot to write something down or couldn’t
make it out I put a ?.

In 1764 Henry Baird #1 had 400 acres, now we see possibly 3 sons with
399 acres, but have no deeds to verify how they acquired the land. It
was not by Patent, Grant, or Survey which are in existance, so it must
have been conveyed through burned deeds or probate records between 1761
and 1782.
John Baird disappears from Buckingham at the age of 43. If he was not a
land owner and he died would he have had the word decd. or est. beside
his PPT’s or would he just disappear from the PPT? The lack of these
words may indicate that he moved, but where or who was he living with
in 1782? This is two early to be John W. Baird b.~1768 son of Hardiman
Baird, so it must be John Baird b.1739.

In 1783 Archibald, Hardeman, and Henry all live in Buckingham and none
of them appear to have children born before 1762, assuming that James
is a slave.
This is the last we see of Henry Baird in Buckingham for awhile, this
would agree with a Henry Baird selling Cheathum Puckett 100 acres in
1783 and then leaving Buckingham Co. VA and going to Halifax Co. VA in
1783/1784. It could also agree with OLD KENTUCKY ENTRIES AND DEEDS
FAYETTE CO. Deed book 3 pg. 152, 1/16/1784 a Henry Baird got 1092
½ acres of land in Fayette Co. KY on the KY River. Also per
Penni Luntsford notes, Warrant #11924.0 5/7/1782 1092.5 acres Henry
Baird 1747.16 fraks/shillings. (Hardiman Baird Warrant #11925.0
5/7/1782 1273 acres, 2037 pound/shillings.) It might also agree with
the British Mercantile Claims, concerning debts owed to the British
Mercantile Co. for trade in 1783/84, Manchester Store noted that "Henry
Baird Jr. removed to parts unknown in low circumstances." It doesn’t
seem likely that it is Henry Baird #1 in KY because he hasn’t been on
these records since 1773. It’s possible that the Henry and Hardiman
Baird who got land in KY are Henry’s sons, and slightly possible that
they could be Hardiman’s sons. See if there are any records for
Kentucky Co. VA before 1780.
I was considering whether or not Cheathum Puckett might be a brother in
law, buying Baird land before we moved, similar to what our Bairds did
in Limestone Co. AL. Of the Pucketts of Buckingham from 1782-1794,
besides Cheathum, there is only mentioned a Daniel Puckett who has a
wife named Anne (Ami). Rather than my first thought, I now wonder if
Anne Puckett might be Anne Baird b.1747, and Cheathum Puckett could be
her son, brother in law, or father in law. I need to do a little
investigating on this, to see if I can identify Anne Puckett.

petition in Buckingham, so there appears to be a Henry Baird in
Buckingham in 1787, and we know there was a Henry Baird in Halifax Co.
in 1787. Could Hardiman's son actually be Henry Hardiman Baird, or

he had twins; I’m just trying to make the dates work.

In 1795 Hardiman Baird, Henry Baird, and Samuel Beard are included in
the 1795 Lincoln Co. KY reconstructed census, due to tax records I
suppose. Samuel Beard may/may not be related, his birth would be about
1774 which is too early to be Samuel Davis Baird. Archibald appears to
have bought Hardimans land in 1795 so this would agree with their
leaving for KY, but it looks like the Henry and Hardiman Baird that are
in KY could be Hardimans sons.
This Edmond Baird is probably a son of Archibalds born 1774, and moved
out at his 21st birthday, because we haven’t seen him on Hardimans list
of children who appear not to have moved out when they turned of age.
This is probably the Edmund Beard who married Elizabeth Adcock, d/o
Edmund Adcock and Joannah Stinson. They are also related to Alexander
Stinson one of our adjoining land owners. This Edmond Baird probably
goes to Orange Co. with the Adcocks.

In 1796 we see a Henry Baird reappear in Buckingham, and in 1795 we saw
Henry Baird sell all his land and disappear from Halifax. Is this Henry
Baird #2 from Halifax coming back to Buckingham because Halifax records
indicate he died 1795, or is this a son of Hardimans born in 1775 or
earlier. This Henry Baird applies for & receives a land grant from
Grant Book 32, pg. 96 & 97 dated 6/7/1794 for the 67 acres surveyed
in 12/14/1762 for Henry Baird #1. Who was paying the tax for the 67
acres between 1762 and 1794? Why are they referring to it as a New
Grant? Hardiman and possibly his son Henry Baird still appear to be
living in Buckingham, but Archibald appears to own Hardimans land. So
are Hardiman and Henry living on the 67 acres, and is there still a
Henry in KY in 1796?

Here we see some more children come into the picture, Archibald must be
the father of Pleasant Baird b.~1777, Hardiman obviously the father of
Samuel Davis Baird b.~1777, but Hardiman's Bible records indicate that
Samuel Davis Baird was born 4/12/1780 which would make him only 18 in
this tithe list. I don’t know if the PPT’s specified an age limit for
the Free Tithe; I’ll have to recheck that for several of the years
where I didn’t denote it.

Subject: RE: Baird family research
Jan, How are you doing? It's been a long time since we were last in
touch with each other. I took a long step back from genealogy for about
2 years. I just had to take a break and do something else for awhile,
but if my recent e-mail activity is any indication, my sabbatical is
over. <grin>
I've worked on things in a hit-and-miss fashion a bit, but have not
really concentrated on any one line in particular. Right before taking
a break, I had a tremendous breakthrough on my mother's father's line
(Baird is my mother's mother's line) and while rewarding, it was pretty
intense to add about 50 generations in less than 2 years . . . most all
nicely documented. I loved connecting up to royalty, so much was
already recorded for me. My brother (his royal stuffiness <grin>)
was elated to finally "know" that he really did have the royal
connections he just knew he had all along, but for me it was most
exciting to find out that I'm connected to George Washington,
Meriwether Lewis and Robert E. Lee. My "little old" 2nd great
grandmother who we never thought to find anything about (we knew she
had been married twice, but didn't know the order; had no birth or
death info and census records couldn't agree other than that she was
illiterate, and possibly "idiotic".) connected up to the Warner and
Lewis families of pre-colonial Virginia. I about had a canary when I
finally put it all together and figured out what I had. It was so
awesome and I wish everyone could have an experience like that.
In the past week, I've received over 5 requests for info and help, most
of them coming out of my KY ancestor's roots and the Baird clan
specifically. As I've been out of touch and really haven't done
anything recently in this line, I was just "looking for handouts"
<giggle>. I did find a bit of info about the land that Hardiman
and Henry bought in KY in 1782. The site for the Secretary of State, KY
- Land Office http://sos.ky.gov/land/ has some searchable land
records and I found this info under the Virginia Treasury Warrants.
Unfortunately, I cannot find where this land was located. I thought I
had a note somewhere that this Hardiman's land (and Henry's) was in
Lincoln County (one of the first 3), but I can't seem to locate that
note now.
Warrant Number: 11925.0 -
Harayman Baird
1273 acres, purchased for 2037.00 Pounds.Shillings
Tuesday, May 07, 1782
NOTE: Same day, prior warrent number, Henry Baird purchased land
Warrant Number: 11924.0
Name(s): Henry Baird
Date: Tuesday, May 07, 1782
Authorized Patent(s): None
Acreage: 1092.5
Assignee: None
Current Money (Pounds.Shillings): £1747.16
If you have any thing that you can add that might help get me back on
track, I'd sure appreciate it. One of the queries I received is a
possible descendant of my Hardiman, and I'd love to be able to tie up
all these Hardimans, Henrys, Archibalds, and Samuel Davis Baird into
one nice family group (wouldn't we all??). Penni
