Richard Walton Gwin and Nancy Elizabeth Watkins . |
Signature of Richard Walton Gwin on the 9 March 1857
receipt
of
his portion of the inheritance on the
document--dated
"Tuesday 3rd April AD 1855"--probating the will at the death of his
mother, Mary Canterbury Gwin. Evidently
Richard lived far enough away that he could not attend the probate
settlement, waiting almost two years for his portion.

The updating of the
numbering system used on this page has been
completed. Generation 28
is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my
children, etc. --
John M. Gwin, Mar 2009
To find their
graves, ask anyone in town how to get to the
cemetery. Upon arriving, find this thirty-foot- high statue of a
Union soldier facing north (left photo).
A
short road leads north from the statue and tees into another going
east and west (center
photo). Just across this second road
are the Richard Gwin plot and
the Silas
Gwin plot. Down the second road (to the east) is a third
plot, that of Richard's grandson, Albert Wells.

![]() This picture was identified in my mother's album as Richard Gwin and Nancy Watkins --- Cordelia Conner "Cordi" Fischer --- |
This is the monument of Richard W. Gwin and Nancy Gwin. The grave of their son-in-law, E. T. Wells, is also located in their plot. Ezra T. Wells and son Albert were pharmacists here in Neodesha, KS, and the [Osage] Indian nation. --- Cordelia Conner "Cordi" Fischer --- "Sacred to the Memory of Father and Mother" -- inscription on west side, above, center |

Benton and Martin V. B. Guinn/Gwin/ etc.
Is
anybody connected with William Benton Guinn and Martin Van Buren Guinn?
They were both seven years old, apparently twins, on the 1850 census in
Platte Co. MO. I can't find them after that. I'm trying to determine if
this Martin was my ancestor.

Gwin Note: In April 2010 we heard from Roger Engelken of Colorado, who sent the following information on John Engelken: John Engelken was born Johann Engelken on February 21, 1868, in Apensen, Germany, to Friedrich Engelken and Catharina Boesch. John immigrated with his uncle and aunt (my g-g-grandparents, Peter Engelken and Margareta Oelers) and their children, leaving Hamburg on January 28, 1885, settling in Montgomery Co., KS, in 1887. The Marie Engelken and Elsie Engelken you make note of in the 1920 Census are two daughters of Hinrich Engelken, my great-grandfather and the son of Peter and Margaret Engelken listed above. Their ages are correct. All of the Engelkens in Montgomery Co., KS, are related and therefore related to me. Our family has always wondered what happened to John Engelken and family. My g-grandfather left there in 1920 with his family for Oklahoma, though two sisters and a brother stayed there, with another sister moving to Ontario and the other sister to California. I've narrowed John's death to between 1925 and 1930, as he is in the state census of 1925, but only his widow is listed on the 1930 census. We've never figured out the names of their children, they are so vastly different than any other in the family. Let me know if you need or want any other information.]

I have spent the last two days going through your entry on the Gwin family and fitting it into our family tree. My husband is a descendant from Ella May, daughter of William W. and Catherine Gwin. We have the "Gwin" rocker in our bedroom, which has been passed down through the family.
My husband, Victor Lee Klopfenstein, is son of Mariella Scott and Harold Klopfenstein.
Mariella is daughter of Nellie Bartholomew and Orva Scott.
Nellie is daughter of Ella May Gwin and Frederick Bartholomew.
The information that I have does have Catherine's last name as Bush, not Rush. I wondered if I had it wrong and thought I might look further at the Washington Co. and Keokuk Co. genealogy libraries. This evening I tried putting Absalom Bush family on the google.com search. Up came the Washington County Portrait and Biographical Album--1887. After scrolling down a ways, there was Absalom Bush. Also the obituary that I was able to obtain had the name as Bush.
If you wish a rundown on my info, let me know. Most of my information is from knowing the people involved and from obits.
Thank you for all the work you have done and for sharing it with everyone.
In friendship,
Patricia Soethout Klopfenstein
Hi!
I'm still working on putting the Bear families together but now that I know you can "hear me", let me share with you my Thomas family in its present searching mode.

ABSALOM BUSH, retired farmer, resides at Kalona. He was born in Fayette County, Ohio, Feb. 8, 1813, and is the son of Leonard and Catherine (Powers) Bush. His father was born in Pendleton County, Va., of German ancestry. He was a farmer and a natural mechanic, and was also a carpenter, manufacturing looms and spinning-wheels, and various other household articles. He was a master in the use of tools, and could make anything that he was requested to, and no man could do finer work. He was married in Virginia to Miss Catherine Powers, who was his companion and helpmeet until death. She was born in Hardy County, Va., and was the daughter of a Dunkard minister. Her family were also of German origin. The following is taken from Portrait and Biographical Album
of
Washington County, Iowa

and transcribed to a Rootsweb page at
http://freepages.books.rootsweb.com/~cooverfamily/album_77.html#bushThe family, consisting of the parents and three children, removed to Ross County, Ohio, on the north fork of the Paint River, where they staid [stayed] two years, and then removed to the farm in Fayette County. This farm was a wild, umimproved place in a wilderness. Their log house was built

without a floor, and after the family were moved the first work of Mr. Bush was to grub the stubs and roots out of the room, and to level off a floor. He and his wife improved the farm and reared a family of eleven children. Mr. Bush died at the age of seventy years, his wife surviving him and dying at the age of seventy-four.
Our subject, Absalom Bush, was reared on a farm and became an expert at tools under the instruction of his father. He was married, Oct. 7, 1832, to Violet, daughter of Levi and Violet (Figgins) Arnold. Mrs. Bush was born in Kentucky, but came to Ohio when very young. She was reared in Fayette County. Mr. and Mrs. Bush are the parents of twelve children, five boys and seven girls, three of whom died in childhood. The others are: Catherine, the wife of William Gwinn (sic), now residing in Keota, Iowa, and the mother of six children, three boys and three girls; Darius, next of birth, was a soldier of the late war, enlisting in Co. H, 7th Vol. Inf., July 11, 1861, on the second call for troops; he was killed in the first battle (Belmont) Grant fought, Nov. 14, 1861. His younger brother, Cyrus, was severely wounded in the same battle, by a gunshot wound in the shoulder. Mr. Bush went to Belmont and brought home his wounded son. His other son was then reported missing, but the father did not know the facts of his death until eight months later, when he learned from a returned prisoner that Darius was cut down by a rebel Colonel, his head being nearly severed from his body. The Union soldiers, seeing the act, shot the Colonel dead in his tracks. A still younger son, D. Ezra, was also a soldier, and was twice wounded, the last time severely (see sketch of Daniel Ezra Bush, below**.) The next youngest child was Elizabeth, who died at the age of eighteen years; Sarah was the wife of E. S. Marsh, and died July 25, 1887, leaving six children, four girls and two boys; Cyrus married Alice Brown, and has six children, three boys and three girls, and resides in English River Township; D. Ezra married Mary Coombs, and has four children, one girl and three boys, and also resides in English River Township; Mary, the wife of John P. Coffman, of the Baptist Church of Albion, Iowa, has six children, four girls and two boys; Leonard, a farmer of Cedar Township, this county, is married to Margaret Strabling, and has four sons and one daughter. The three who died in childhood were Anderson, aged eleven years, Louisa and Huldah. The last named was the youngest child.
Mr. Bush came to Washington County with his family in October, 1846. He bought the farm now owned by his son D. Ezra, on section 24, and continued farming until 1862, and then moved to the village of Kalona, where he has since resided. He has not been a seeker after office, but has served as Township Trustee, and in minor positions. In politics he was a Whig, and a life-long Abolitionist, and worked earnestly for the restriction of slavery. He became a member of the Republican party at its formation, and has been a stanch supporter of its principles ever since. Mr. Bush and wife and several of their children, are members of the Christian Church. They have now forty grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Bush is a man of sincere humane sentiments, has always been a champion of the weak and oppressed, and a fearless denouncer of tyranny and wrong. His patriotism was unbounded, and the sacrifice made by him in the loss of one son and the wounding of two others, attested his sincerity. He is a man of remarkable temperate habits; for forty years he has drunk no intoxicating liquors nor taken a dose of medicine.
**DANIEL EZRA BUSH is a farmer residing on section 24, township 77, range 7, English River Township, where he owns 247 acres of fine land, under a hight state of cultivation. He is a native of Tazewell County, Ohio, born Jan. 13, 1843, and is the son of Absalom and Violet (Arnold) Bush, the former a native of Fayette County, Ohio, and the latter of Kentucky, but who lived in Fayette County from childhood. The family were originally from Virginia. When Daniel was but four years of age the family moved from Ohio to Washington County, Iowa, and located upon the farm now owned and occupied by him. Here he was reared, and received his education in the public schools. English River Township, at that time, was but thinly settled, and the wild land must be converted into farms, and in making the change every member of the family must do his part. In the work of the farm, supplemented by an attendance upon the public schools, young Daniel was engaged until August, 1862, when he enrolled his name as a member of Co. F, 30th Iowa Vol. Inf., and was appointed Corporal. As such he went into the field, and was with the regiment in the operations against Vicksburg, in the fall of 1862, and then with Sherman in in the battle of Haines' Bluff, on the Yazoo River, and at Arkansas Post. The regiment next participated in the siege of Vicksburg, and in one of the charges made upon the rebel works Mr. Bush received a gunshot wound in the right hand. In the Chattanooga campaign the regiment participated, and, under Hooker, it was engaged in the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. It was also in the battle of Resaca, and in various engagements in the Atlanta campaign. In all these battles and campaigns Mr. Bush was with his regiment, and in the battle of Jonesboro, Sept. 1, 1864, he was severely wounded in the right breast and shoulder, causing the dislocation of the arm at the shoulder, and the removal of four inches of bone of the arm. For months he lay in hospital, and by reason of the serious nature of his wounds, incapacitating him from further active service in the field, he received an honorable discharge and was mustered out Jan. 9, 1865.
Returning to his home in English River Township, for two years his life was held by a delicate thread. His strength then began slowly to return, and as he was able he resumed his work upon the farm, but it was not until fourteen years later that the ball was removed. The years of suffering that he endured was enough to break down many a less rugged man, but he bore the pain uncomplainingly, realizing that it was necessary that some sacrifice should be made that our country should be saved, the Union restored.
On the 1st day of September, 1875, Mr. Bush was united in marriage, in Jackson Township, Washington County, with Miss Mary Coombs, a native of Indiana, and daughter of W. A. and Mahal (Davis) Coombs. Four children have been born unto them: Daisy L., born in Ottumwa, Iowa, Dec. 11, 1877; Leroy E., born in Jackson Township, March 23, 1879; Carl A. born May 16, 1881; Louis Ellsworth, May 26, 1886.
Mr. Bush and family attend the Christian Church. Politically he is a Republican, with strong prohibition sentiments. A brave soldier and a patriotic man in war and peace, he is truly a representative citizen, not only of the township in which he lives, but of the county as well. As such he is respected by all. The farm upon which he lives is well cultivated and shows evidence of the worth and ability of its owner.
