When the Laguna
Casino first opened, I didn't understand why it existed. The structure
was plain/ugly, it was small, (even by New Mexico standards) and
right down the road was the Dancing Eagle and Sky City. Shortly
thereafter, the grand plan was unveiled, with construction
starting on the Route 66 Casino. A few weeks before the opening
of the Route 66 casino, the Laguna Casino was issuing Route 66 slot
cards and T-shirts. I assumed that when the new casino
opened, the Laguna Casino would be closed (Why have two casinos
in the same location?)
Some of the TITO slot
machines were removed, and the table games closed. Was I wrong! When
the Route 66 Casino opened, the Laguna Casino metamorphosed into the
Casino Express. still all TITO slot machines, no gaming tables, but
with an attached convenience store, small restaurant, and gas
station. Actually, it's pretty clever. If you are just stopping
to fuel up, you can dash in, play a little slots, grab some food and
dash out. And you don't have to contend with a large casino. I like it.
(and the convenience store sells Krispy Cremes!)
