Actually, there is a real Las Vegas. New Mexico. It is a small historic town in the northeast of the state, but it does not have any legalized gambling. The altered Las Vegas sign is my way of introducing you to a brief pictorial tour of the 21 casinos in New Mexico. The 16 Indian casinos and 5 Racetrack casinos have come a long way over the last several years. In the early days, several of the Indian casinos started as high stakes bingo halls. When "casino type" gambling on the Indian reservations and pueblos was legalized, several casinos were housed in what amounted to large tents. A couple others could best be described as looking like old school cafeterias with slot machines. However, within the last several years, most of the Indian Casinos have metamorphosed into almost "vegas" style structures, with a Southwestern motif. Along the way, legislation was passed that allowed several of the New Mexico horse racing tracks to add slots or video-only machines, in an attempt to generate funds to revive the declining horse racing industry. From my layman's perspective, all have been successful. The following pages provide photos of the casinos, scans of tokens, links to the casino web pages, and links to Greg Susong's ChipGuide, for chips. Additionally, I have included a map of New Mexico, showing the locations of the casinos. I take full responsibility for the verbage and token scans. (As you'll notice, scanning is not one of my professional endeavors!). Many thanks and much appreciation go to Dave Niver, a fellow token & chip collector. Dave provided many of the photographs found herein.
