Billy The Kid Casino,  located in the "high country" of Ruidoso,  is adjacent to the Ruidoso Racetrack.  Several years ago,  the State of New Mexico allowed the long established horse racetracks to open small slots/video machines-only  casinos, in an attempt to revitalize the declining  racetrack industry.  (Part of the proceeds are allocated to the racetrack.)  From what I have read, the effort has been very successful. Recently, these casinos were allowed to expand, given the early successes.  I particularly like this location, with the surrounding mountains and trees, and the resort city of Ruidoso.  By the way, the outlaw Billy the Kid did actually roam  this area, and was involved in the famous Lincoln County Wars. An added plus is that Casino Apache and the Casino Apache Travel Center are only a few miles down the road. Well worth a visit.
