After several years of stop & go construction (more stop than go) the Jicarilla Apache finally opened the Apache Nugget Casino on Hwy 550, about 50 miles east of Farmington. It basically sits out in the middle of nowhere. However, I hope it will be successful. It provides a nice break in driving between the Four Corners area and central New Mexico (Albuquerque/Santa Fe area). Actually, I believe the "plan" is to develop the facility into a full fledged rest area/stopover point. The casino is currently housed in a big white tent, indicating that it is temporary until a more permanent structure is built. For the token collector, the casino is (unfortunately) all TITO. On the plus side, however, the staff is very friendly and cooperative.
