Notes on the Nutt and Cochran Families.
From a Letter Written by Jane Hamilton (Nutt) Walton to
my Father, her Nephew, Feb.11, 1865

" My Great Grandfather Nutt came to this country when my Grandfather was 13 years old. My Grandfather married Grace Cochran and settled in Athol, Mass. Worchester Co. and lived to be 99 years nd 6 months old. When he was 90 he said that if his family only thought so he was able to ride to Ohio on horseback. His wife died leaving three children, Susanna, John and James- my father. John never married. Susanna married Moses Ball.
My Grandfather (Glass) Cochran was 13 years old when his father come to this country. All were from Ireland, but were Scotsmen. My Grandfather married Sarah Hamilton of Marblehead, Mass. and settled in Blandford, Mass. He raised a family of seven children, two daughters, and Robert, John, Cornelious, Abner and Glass (which was my Grandfather's name) He gave each of his boys a farm and settled his sons around him. Only one of them died in Blandford and he had no children, so posterity is extinct in the town. Their daughters were Susanna, my mother, who married James Nutt, and Mary married Moses Baird.
They lived in Blandford till after the Revolutionary War, when they moved to Loudon, Berkshire Co.,Mass.
I regert exceedingly that when I was with mother I did not make more records of our ancestry, as she could trace it for several generations, and her Great Great Grandmother, by the name of Anderson come to this country and died in Blandford, and mother ermembered her. This Mrs. Anderson had seen worse times in a Rebellion in Ireland than we see now. She had seen houses and barns filled with Protestants set on fire and all burned together"

Sarah Hamilton, who married Glass Cochran, was born in Marblehead Mass., on Feb. 24,1722, and was the daughter of Robert and Mary ---Hamilton. Mary Hamilton died in 1778

NOTEs
1) This says Lu & Molly lived to adulthood. I have records of Mary and Susanna with husbands which says they were the ones living to adulthood, not Lu & Molly.
From Jim Autry jxa@odetics.com:

I have read the Blandford town records page by page searching for Glass Cochran info. It appeared that at the time of town members deaths, their
families were listed. This is the listing from the town records:

Born to Glass(2s) Cochran and Sarah his wife:
Robert Cochran April 9, 1748
John Cochran May 30, 1749
Susanna Cochran Feb 4, 1752
Cornelius Cochran Sept. 14, 1754
Abner Cochran June ?6 1758
Mary Cochran May 11, 1761
Amos Cochran Jan ?1, 1763 (See Note 5)

From Joe Galloway spleech13@hotmail.com:
In old handwriting, a capital "L" and a capital "S" look very much
alike. Could "Lu" actually be "Su?" Also, "Molly" was a common nickname
for Mary in those days. Perhaps we are talking about the same two women.

2) Rose Harnden has LDS film "5 generations of Royce." Shows this marriage.

3) I have no record of Joseph J. Cochran or any Ezra Cochran who could have been his father.

4) His tombstone says "died Sep 5 1795 in the 80 year of his age" which would have him
born in 1716.

5) From Barney Evans barney226@juno.com:
The name Amos needs further review. I feel that Amos died young. He was the younger
brother of our Glass, buried in Knox County, Ind. (See Note 1)

6) Most think this is the wife of Joseph Sydney Cochran (Jr.):
A) Basil's database shows Dulcinia Paraleo Pearee (source Barney Evans)
B) Joan Gunter has PARALEE, Dulcinea (Source unknown)
C) Dulcina Dukes married July 9, 1872. (Joe Galloway)

7) Death date of Glass Cochran, (Jr) shown in Bible as 1 September 1825. Basil Shannon has copies of an inventory of his possessions dated 26 November 1822, a declaration signed by Mehitable Cochran Widow of Glafs Cochran dated 13 November 1822 and a probate record dated 22 November 1823. Therefore, bible is wrong and he died in 1822.

General Notes: [Hank Eads HEADS341hE@aol.com 212-2 Albi Rd, Naples FL 34112.FTW]

General John B. Cochran, one of the most distinguished early settlers of Brown County. He was only 13 years old when his father William Cochran Jr. along with his mother Elizabeth came down the Ohio River, landing at Limestone [Maysville, Kentucky] settling near Little Washington, Mason, KY. As a small boy, he traveled to Ft. Washington, now [Cincinnati], and saw corn growing on what is now Fourth Street. He lived with his family on their settlement near the East Fork of Eagle Creek, Brown County, Ohio. He left home at an early age and worked at the Kanawah Salt Works, near Point Pleasant, West Virginia on the Ohio River. At age 18 he became overseer of the Salt Works. In those days, salt was one of necessities of life. John is said to have shipped the first barge load of salt down the Ohio River to Louisville, Kentucky.
He returned to Brown County in 1806 and purchased a farm from Nathaniel Beasley, located 6 miles North-East of Aberdeen on the East Fork of Eagle Creek, in what is now Huntington Township, where he resided for the greater part of his life.
In1809 he marrried Tamer Howard, daughter of Cyrus Howard and Milly Boose of Aberdeen, Ohio. She was an esteemed member of the Christain Church. Her father Cyrus Howard ran the ferry from Aberdeen across the Ohio River to Limestone.
In 1833 John Cochran bought another farm on Eagle Creek, which was owned by Frank Schwallie in 1883 five miles East of Ripley and adjacent to his present farm. This farm is located on Flaugher Hill Road and was owned by John Miller in 1991.
General Cochran served in the War of 1812 as Deputy Sargent in the Commissary Department in Washington D.C. Being very interested in the Military, he passed through all grades from Captain to the rank of Brigader General. After returning from the War, he entered politics and was elected in 1824 as Representive to the State Legisture. He was re-elected in 1826, 1827 and 1828. In 1829 he was elected as State Senator from both Brown and Adams Counties and re-elected in 1830.
General Cochran had little education attending school only three months, but was self taught, learning to read from all books he could obtain. He was known as a man of strong mind and remarkable in the power of memory. In his recollection of dates, he was seldom found to be in error. He carefully cultivated his memory in his early business transactions by imprinting facts on his mind, becoming marked for his tenacity from which he could remember anything he read or heard.
He was a Mason, and assisted in organizing the first Masonic Lodge in Brown County. In his business pursuits, he meet with great secess and died in possession of considerable wealth. In his old age he resided in Catlin, Illinois for two years, with relatives but returned to Brown County to live with his son, Colonel John Cochran. The romance of our ancestors Jane Barker and Andrew Cochran began in the Spring of 1790 near Taneytown and/or Emmitsburg, Maryland. During this exciting era, many of the families from the Eastern communities "pulled up their roots" and sought new homes in the Northwest.

Jane's step-father, John Baldwin and her mother, Mary Currey Barker Baldwin were among them. In the Spring of 1791, they left their Maryland plantation and headed for "old Kaintucky" thus interrupting the romance of Jane Currey and Andrew Cochran. What the lover's thoughts were at the time is anyone's guess, but it is known that Andrew was anxious to accompany the Baldwins. Only the matter of "settling up" his father's estate kept him from going. I am sure he promised to follow later.

The Baldwin "entourage" that came over the wilderness trail to Pittsburg and down the Ohio on a flatboat consisted of John and Mary and their 5 children plus Mary's two daughters, Jane and Margaret Barker (father- Capt. John William Barker ), two brothers of John Baldwin and the ever faithful "Old Mose". They came into Mason County, Kentucky and settled near what is now the town of Washington, southwest of present Maysville (then known as Limestone).

John Baldwin bought land at once. He built a log house for his family and shelter of a sort for his horses, cattle and pigs. With the help of his brothers, he cleared land and planted seeds brought from Maryland. In short order, crops sprang from the "so-called" new ground.

Sometime later, possibly the following year after the Baldwins located in Kentucky, a tall, slender, sandy-haired, young Scotsman led his horse from a flat boat at Limestone (now Maysville) and inquired the direction to John Baldwin's home. He was Andrew Cochran from "Carrolsburg Manor" in Frederick County, Maryland. This was the man Jane Barker left behind when her family migrated to the Blue Grass region.

Their courtship was resumed. Andrew bought land near the Baldwins and started to build his own log house. Not many details are available on the intervening period, but when the new home was completed he and Jane were married and promptly moved in. That event took place on February 14, 1794.

Andrew and Jane decided to stay in Kentucky. The Baldwins--Jane's mother and step-father--nevertheless moved to North Liberty (Cherry Fork) Adams Co., Ohio, in the Spring of 1795. In addition to other members of their family, they were accompanied by "Old Mose". He was grieved at being parted from Jane for the first time in her life, but could not leave his "missus".

Some 35 miles now separated the two families. Still, "Old Mose" frequently went back and forth between the two areas. In fact, he made such regular trips that the settlers along the route soon learned to watch for him and sent letters to the river post office in his care. Thus the "faithful Mose" became the first letter carrier (unofficial) of Adams County, Ohio.

Jane and Andrew lived in their log cabin home in Kentucky for eleven years. Three children were born to them there; William Barker Cochran, Mary Jane Cochran, and Sarah Miller Cochran. And during those years, they made frequent trips also between their home and the Baldwin home in Ohio. Eventually they became more and more enamoured with the new settlement made up of many Scotch Presbyterian families.

A second son, James Andrew Cochran, was born (1806) soon after their new home was built. Four years later, Nancy Margaret Cochran was born on February 10, 1810. Andrew Cochran marched away in July of 1812 along with the company of soldiers partially recruited from his neighborhood. His brother, William, also joined up. A few weeks later, the youngest of Jane and Andrew's children, a daughter Elizabeth, was born destined never to see her father.

Jane and Andrew's eldest son, William, was fourteen years old when his father went away. According to the information available, he was a tall, sturdy youth, much like his father. The responsibility of the farm and care of the family therefore fell upon his shoulders.

Then one cold morning in February of 1815, these youngsters took some grain to the mill for grinding into meal. A man rode by and told that a few soldiers had arrived in West Union on the previous night with the story that Andrew Cochran had been killed near Sandusky, Ohio on his way home from war.
William and Mary rode sadly home hoping against hope that what they had heard was not true. They resolved to withhold the sad tidings from their mother for the time being. Then on the following day, Andrew's brother William, came to their house accompanied by two other soldiers. He verified the story the children had held back from their mother. He stated that while he and other soldiers were on their way home, they came across Andrew's body the day after he had been killed along with some other soldiers. Some Indians and renegade whites had attacked the group and in a pitched battle slew them and robbed them of their pay. With a sad heart, he had helped bury the remains after taking some personal items from Andrew's clothing which he gave to Jane. Thus, on February 20, 1818, the worldly toil and strife of a gallant ancestor, Andrew Cochran, came to an inglorious end.

In a few days following the tragedy, Jane (Barker) Cochran was very sad and lonely. Neither she nor the children were able to resume their old interest in their surroundings. Everywhere they turned, they were reminded of their loss. Consequently, Jane became very restless. She longed for a new place where things would be different and she could forget the past. Early one October morning in 1815, Jane and William mounted saddlehorses and rode northward through the still rugged country to the village of Belfast in Highland County, Ohio. From there they followed a wagon trail that trended northeast to a ridge which overlooked the village and on which is now located the Coss-Belfast Cemetery. An hour later, Jane had acquired an option on the property. By early afternoon, they had returned to their home near Tranquility and began making new plans for the future. Weeks before its completion, she named the new home "Hickory Hill".

Jane Barker Cochran died on March 26, 1863 in her 90th year. She was laid to rest in the Coss-Belfast Cemetery near the village on the ridge overlooking the countryside. It was the one and same ridge where almost 50 years before, Jane had reined in her horse to look at the surrounding country in its peaceful serenity.
