STANDARDS
PRIORITY STANDARDS:
5. Analyze and evaluate the impact of 19th century Imperialism from varied perspectives, to include:
a) clash of cultures;

b) British empire expands around the world;

c) nationalism (e.g., competition and conflict between European nations for raw materials and markets, acquisition of colonies in Africa and Asia, impact on indigenous populations);

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVE (SWBAT):
Students will explain how the changes that brought about the industrial revolution led to Western domination of the world in the 19th century.
 

BIG IDEAS:
Competition Among Countries:  Through the new imperialism, Westerners controlled vast territories, exploited native populations, and opened markets for European products.

Competition Among Countries:  Virtually all of Africa was under European rule by 1900.

Struggle for Rights:  The British brought stability to India but destroyed native industries and degraded Indians.

Self-Determination:  Latin American countries gained their political independence but became economically dependent on Western powers.
 

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS (SWBATA):
What might be some effects of imperialism?

What reasons might the Europeans have had for dominating and colonizing Africa?

Would it be difficult for our own democratic government to deny equal rights to any group?

What are some reasons why people take part in revolutions?
