PASTOR’S REPORT

Dear Friends in Christ:

An annual report is a regular feature of accountability for our church and draws us from Past to Present to Future. It describes some of the particulars of a very broad reality: the life of a congregation.

The aspect of looking at the past year is to allow each of us to know what we all have been doing in ministry. Each of us knows some of the matters covered in an annual report, but the report is designed to give each member a view of the whole Body of Christ, each worker a view of the whole effort, each recipient of particular gifts a view of the range of gifts given to us all for the building up of the Body.

The annual report also allows us to take something that is always changing, always in process, and to see it as it appears in a present moment. It gives us a sense of where we are now.

A third function of the annual report is to bring us, together, to a sense of anticipation and expectancy. Having seen a broader view of our work as a church and having sensed our present situation, we are in a position to look into the future. We greet our unpredictable future with the expectancy that God, having brought us to this day, still has much to do in, with and through us. In the passage from the Gospel of Mark quoted on the front of this report, Jesus assures his disciples that our salvation is possible because of God’s power, not our own. The assurance, "With God all things are possible," invites us to enter the future with his direction and power.

After reading this report, let us thank God for his past work and ours; for his presence with us now; and, for the sure and certain hope that is ours in Jesus Christ. Whatever the future may hold, it is our Lord who holds the future – our Lord who holds us and draws us into each day, each occasion in his purpose.

Yours in Christ,

John Clark Poling

Associate Pastor and Youth Minister’s Report

This church never rests!!! I am constantly amazed by the number of activities we have going on in any given week. There are the obvious ones like Sunday worship, Sunday School, and Salt & Light Co. But, there are also activities that few people know about, like the quilting group, the Women's Bible Study Fellowship, and the Girl Scout troop that meet here. Indeed, it is a rare day when the staff members are the only ones on the premises.

This is a clear sign of a healthy growing church. No one wants to come to a church where they feel like they are the only ones who do anything. Or worse yet, be in a church where nothing is happening. It is great to be able to pick up the telephone, call for help, and get someone on the other end who says yes to your request. This church has a faith that is alive and growing. And, more importantly, this church wants to share that faith with others.

Our sharing reaches out to the children of our congregation and beyond. Some of the children who come to our programs don’t have anywhere else they can learn about how to become a healthy adult. They are searching for something or someone to help them figure out how they can lead a good and righteous life. They are trying to find a place where they can experience the love that God has to offer. When they come here, they receive that love, unconditionally.

Our sharing reaches out to the adults of our congregation. We provide time and space for adults to study the Scriptures. There are opportunities for fellowship. We meet together to explore what it means to be a Christian in the world today. We challenge one another as we grow in our faith.

Our sharing reaches out to the poor and homeless in our community. We financially support organizations like Casa de Peregrinos and Gospel Rescue Mission. Several of our members go to Community of Hope to serve a hot meal once a month. Our Deacons provide sack lunches and gasoline vouchers for those who come by the church needing help.

First Presbyterian Church is a vital and growing congregation. As we move in to this next year, may we continue on this journey of faith. Continue to support each other through prayers and challenges. Know that you are in my prayers and the prayers of others in the congregation. We will continue to grow in our faith, with Christ’s help.

In Christ's name,

 Sue Spencer,

Associate Pastor and Youth Minister

Director of Education Report

When one is faced with the many challenges of a new year, it is always good to look back over the previous months. It is a good reminder that the future is always built upon the foundation of the past. The work in Christian education in our congregation over many years has provided an excellent foundation for people of all ages to grow and mature in their personal faith. So many opportunities are offered on a regular basis. There really is something for everyone!

For our young people in Sunday School and the Salt & Light Co., The Disciples’ Avenue, our Workshop/Rotation Model for education, continues to be a successful venture! Throughout the year the elementary classes learned many Bible stories and the answers to some of their faith questions as they engaged in active learning in the Cinema, Temple, Puppet Theatre, Art Gallery, Printshop, Bakery, and other "businesses." The teaching units have continued to be fun and educational for both students and teachers. Special thanks to Joyce Gemoets, Margie Rankin, Jacque Parks, Debra Smith, and Patricia Tomlin who have spent many, many hours designing and implementing these workshops.

There was an exciting week of Vacation Bible School in June using the theme The Fisherman's Story: Jesus Calls Peter. Thanks to Nicole Rawson and Christy Black for directing under the leadership of Sue Spencer and thanks to the many teachers, mid-school youth and other volunteers that made the week such a success.

Good educational opportunities for the mid-school and senior high youth were also provided throughout the year. Susan Spencer and the sponsors and teachers, Howard and Linda Daniels, Gary Gemoets, Randy Farmer, Tammy and Barry Prahl, John Poling, and several others taught the lesson plans and shared their own faith stories in the process.

One of the vital areas of ministry and education in our church is the music program for children and youth. During the past year, most of this effort was directed through our

Salt & Light Co. each Wednesday. The elementary children have regular choir rehearsal every week as well as a music and worship time as they gather for Sunday School. They presented a lovely Easter musical and an inspirational Christmas program. The youth in mid-school and senior high alternate choir rehearsal with other forms of worship expression and leadership throughout the year including chancel drama, hand signing, and instrumental accompaniment. They led 3-4 worship services that were more contemporary in nature that were inspirational and enjoyable for our congregation. Special thanks to Harriet Johnson, Art Garcia, Elisa Poling, Lisa Farmer, and Joe Fronczek for the many hours of voluntary rehearsal required for these services. Also, thanks to Nora Yaryan and Ray Carter who provided drama leadership and to John Pleasant for directing the Illuminate! youth choir last spring.

It was a great year in adult education with an exciting variety of course offerings. Philip Yancey's video series, The Jesus I Never Knew, was finished during the first quarter. Other video series during the year included Wrestling with Angels, Soundings in John: The Prologue by Dale Bruner, and The Lord's Prayer, I Corinthians 13, and the

Mideast Perspective on Women all by Dr. Kenneth Bailey with Marsha Topley, Nancy French, and Marie Sovereign teaching. John Poling taught a Lenten class using Yeshua. Dick Dale's class finished a study of Hebrews and began a study on Revelation. The Rev. Ozzie Lutz finished up the Thursday morning class on The Gospel of John last spring.

The Rev. Al Kissling finished a year-long class using Kerygma:The Bible in Depth last spring and is repeating it this year by popular demand with a class on Thursday evenings. These people really study! David Sallee, Presbyterian Campus Minister, and his wife, Nancy, taught a class on Sunday mornings for young adults titled "The Big Picture." There have also been an array of Bible study groups in Presbyterian Women.

In the fall, the Education Committee made a strong effort to educate the congregation on the Revised Common Lectionary and its use in study and worship. Courses taken from The Whole People of God curriculum were used for all ages. John Poling taught a Sunday morning adult class titled A Lectionary Investigation.

Sponsored by the Salt & Light Co. and in cooperation with Christian education and missions committees, during the fall our congregation had a successful campaign for Heifer Project International. With a mission dinner, a carnival of games and information booths, and several creative "spots" during the Focus on Mission in worship, we reached our tremendous goal of raising $5,000.00 to purchase an entire Ark of Animals! The young people in Salt & Light Co. had six weeks of study about Heifer Project, world hunger concerns, and the development of an economic survival base for communities around the world. This included field trips to view research projects at NMSU that are involved with issues that directly impact work by Heifer Project. Dr. Bobby Rankin taught an adult course in the fall titled A Simple Gift: Sustainable Living for a Hungry World which was very informative and well-attended.

Many good things happened during 1999 in our educational programs. The dedication and faithfulness of so many people made our efforts a vibrant source of inspiration and spiritual growth. Undergirded by prayer and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, this area of our church is responding to God’s call to service and discipleship.

It is, however, imperative that more people in the congregation become involved in the educational programs that are available. As students of the Word, all of us must become diligent in our attendance at classes - especially Sunday mornings - and continue to pursue steadily and prayerfully our reading and study. Only then will we be able to discern God’s call upon our individual and corporate lives, to respond in faithful service to Him and to others, and to deepen our relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ, who desires above all else to draw us closer to Him. I invite you to renew your efforts in 2000 and to join us in this exciting journey.

Under His direction and in His service,

Jackie Poling,

Director of Education and Congregational Life

Youth Report

Our church is indeed blessed by God. We have a wonderful group of lay persons without whose help we would not be able to provide the wonderful programs for our youth that we now have. As always there has been tremendous support from this congregation in supplying a quality, fun and spirit-filled program for our youth.

This year began once again with the winter retreats for both the senior high youth and the mid-school youth. Howard and Linda Daniels and Tammy and Barry Prahl worked with Pastor Sue Spencer to provide excellent programs where the youth could examine their walk with Christ.

Through the year we saw the youth making sandwiches, holding dances, providing lunches for the congregational dinners and many other activities as the youth worked toward raising funds. These projects allowed our youth to participate in presbytery-wide Presbyterian Youth Connection (PYC) events, presbytery camps, and national conferences.

In late June, nine mid-school youth and Tammy and Barry Prahl attended The Great Escape in the Rockies in Gunnison, CO. While at this event they explore who they are as a group, but also who they are as individuals in Christ. Our youth also attended the mid-school PYC event held at Camp Chimney Spring.

Three of our senior high youth went with Sue Spencer to the Montreat West Youth Conference. They examined different thresholds they face in their lives and how to move through these thresholds. After one week home, we sent seven youth with Howard and Linda Daniels and Sue Spencer to Tucson, AZ for this year’s Mission trip. There they worked at House of Neighborly Services to expand their playground equipment. The youth had the opportunity to serve a poor community, but they also got to meet and play with the youth from the area. As we worked, we learned how important it is to reach out to others in the name of Christ.

Our presbytery camps at Camp Chimney Spring near Cloudcroft provided wonderful opportunities for our young people to grow in their faith. We not only sent several young people to attend the camps, we also provided sponsors, loaned the church van, and provide board members who helped to plan the events. This congregation has continued its support as a Covenant Member of Camp Chimney Spring.

Our weekly Salt & Light Co. program provides the foundation for our youth programs. We have fifteen mid-school youth and thirteen senior high youth who regularly attend the program. This participation helps the youth to claim the church as their own. They increase participation in the life of the church and they grow in their personal faith as they attend this program. A special thanks to the Prahls, the Carters, the Tomlins, Susan Sullivan, the Kisslings, Randy Farmer, the Daniels, the Gemoets, Art Garcia, and Harriet Johnson, and the many parents and others who help with the youth.

It has been a productive year. Our youth have received the opportunity to grow in their faith. It is through the efforts of this congregation that we can provide this experience for our youth. Thank you again for your support of the youth program.

In Christ's name,

Sue Spencer,

Associate Pastor and Youth Minister

BOARD OF DEACONS

TREASURER’S ELEVEN-MONTH REPORT

January-November 1999

The First Presbyterian Church Deacons receive funds from donations and special projects. The donations are from designated gifts, the communion offerings, and loose change offering. The gifts designated for the Soup Kitchen (El Caldito) are reported separately. Three special projects are held each year. The Deacons sponsor the Camp Chimney Spring church service, the fall hamburger fry, and the Christmas support for needy families in the Mesilla Valley Hospice program. For this year, the donations to the Deacons Fund totaled $6110.11, to the Soup Kitchen totaled $1020.00, and to Special Projects totaled $2634.15. The grand total of $9764.26 is summarized on the accompanying chart of donations.

For the purposes of this report, the expenses of the Deacons are listed in five categories. The emergency assistance category is expanded to include expenses for family aid, gasoline vouchers, and the sack lunches provided to the needy, and totaled $5042.43. Of that total, $3300.00 were regular monthly donations to the Samaritan Emergency Assistance Fund, which serves as a clearing house for local churches providing for the needy, usually transients. The staff issued thirty-eight gasoline vouchers totaling $516.19. The services category includes flowers provided to the ill or for certain special occasions, the taped church services, the Agape Caregivers materials, and miscellaneous expenses and totaled $779.94. The special projects expenses were $2200.23. A direct donation to the local Salt & Light program for scholarships totaled $144.00. The Soup Kitchen expenses consist of regular monthly donations of $75.00 to El Caldito plus reimbursement of First Presbyterian Church members' out-of-pocket expenses as serving team members. Soup Kitchen expenses totaled $1094.61. The grand total of expenses is $9261.21 and is graphed on the accompanying chart.

Our beginning balance at the start of the year was $3955.57, and our balance at the end of December was $4458.62. The Deacons wish to thank the congregation of First Presbyterian Church for supporting our mission so generously. We give thanks to the Lord for making it all possible.

Session Committee: ADMINISTRATION

The Administration Committee is comprised of Matt Holt, John Tomlin, Jim Parks, and Mel Parish. As a result of policies put in place last year, staff is now empowered, pursuant to Session approved protocols, to respond quickly and directly to requests for the use of church facilities. Accordingly, staff has taken responsibility for much of the work performed by the Administration Committee in years past.

As a result of recommendations made by the Administration Committee during the past year, the church has had a new telephone system installed, and has acquired a new computer system for the church staff. Also as a result of a prior recommendation, the Buildings and Grounds Committee has been able to have the church parking lot paved and the lighting the sanctuary enhanced.

Contrary to any assumption that the church’s facilities are used for services and the occasional wedding and funeral, FPC is used for a wide variety of purposes. The church provides a home to a number of groups that meet regularly, including:

Women's Bible Study Fellowship – an interdenominational woman’s group which meets weekly;

Girl Scouts - a girl scout troop under the leadership of Susan Grandle and Cheryl Ray;

Los Colcheras – a quilt circle which meets weekly;

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill – a support and education group which meets several times monthly; and

Additionally, the facilities are used on an "as needed" basis by a number of other people and groups:

The American Guild of Organists used our sanctuary and organ for a production;

The Burkhardt Music Festival was held at our church;

There are regular piano recitals held at the church;

The Farm House Fraternity held its annual banquet in Jones Hall;

The Las Cruces Public Schools held a "Head Start" conference at our church, and has conducted teacher workshops here;

The Multiple Sclerosis Association used our facilities for a teleconference; and

Music students at New Mexico State University, who use our organ for practice

The Administration Committee hopes that the use of the church’s facilities can be expanded during the coming year.

Matt Holt, Chairman

Session Committee: BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

Members: Jerry Grandle, Chairman, Elder; Charlie Yaryan, Elder; Robert Aikin, Deacon;

Brian McPherson; Fred Yanker, Deacon; John LaVerne, Deacon.

1999 has been a busy year for Buildings & Grounds Committee. In the spring this year, with a gracious gift, many contributions, and some operating capital we were able to have the entire parking lot resurfaced and restriped. Also in the spring we were able to have a Spring Work Day, with lunch provided by the Nurture Committee. Many house-keeping duties were done, inside and outside, to spruce up the grounds and help out our Sexton.

In the early fall a lighting study was done with the assistance of a trained lighting professional As a result several changes were make in the sanctuary to provide a brighter, more even light in the sanctuary. The changes also allowed us to realize a savings, in the amount of kilowatts used, decreasing the cost of lighting during worship.

The internet allowed Charlie to locate a company that produced obsolete light fixture covers at an extremely reasonable price. This allowed us to replace several damaged and unsightly old covers in the hallway areas of Jones, Branigan and Reeves. The result is uniform lighting in the halls without the cost of replacing entire fixtures.

Aside from these projects, Buildings and Grounds has worked at maintaining the buildings and equipment with an effort to minimize cost to the church. Some equipment was replaced by necessity, while other pieces were bought out of season for next year (as several coolers will require replacement in the spring).

The committee members of the Buildings and Grounds would like to take this opportunity at the end of the year to recognize and thank the many generous tasks, labors, and contributions from the congregation members that make our projects possible.

Respectfully submitted,

Jerry Grandle, Chairman

Session Committee: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Members: Patricia Tomlin, Chairperson, Elder; Marsha Topley, Elder; Elisa Poling, Deacon;

Margie Rankin, Joyce Gemoets, Sue Carter, Jackie Poling, ex officio, Sue Spencer, ex officio.

The Christian Education Committee has sponsored a variety of programs for participation by the whole church. Here are some of the highlights of the 1999 year.

Our Sunday Morning Classes for adults included:

Phillip Yancey's video series "Wrestling with Angels" led by Marsha Topley

Dick Dale's class on Revelation and Romans

"Yeshua" a Lenten class led by John Poling

"Book of John" video series with Dale Bruner, led by Marsha Topley

Ken Bailey's series on the Lord's Prayer and Corinthians 13, "Love and Spiritual Gifts, Love Defined" along with a video class titled "The Mideast Perspective on Women" and "Women in the Bible" led by Marie Sovereign

John Poling's class "Millennium Madness" and also a lectionary course was offered in the fall.

A Kerygma Class: "The Bible in Depth" was taught by Al Kissling on

Thursdays in the fall.

The Youth Program is still active in our church taking upon themselves leadership roles

including teaching, Board of Deacons' member and leading worship. Please see the separate report.

Heifer Project International was the focus of our Annual Salt & Light Mission Night.

This program is based on the concept: Help others help themselves. The money given to this project buy animals for milk, eggs, meat and/or labor and provides families to help others by giving offspring of their animals to other needy families. Over $5,000 was given for this mission and we thank all who participated in helping!

Vacation Bible School centered around the theme "Jesus calls Peter, the fisherman's

story." The children who attended enjoyed participating during the third week

in June. Sue Spencer helped the senior highs and several college students in

leading it this year.

We want to thank everyone who has participated in the Salt & Light Co. this year. It could not be the success it is without the countless hours of volunteer work by kitchen crews, teachers, board members, table parents and other helpers. Sue Carter has resigned as Director and is being replaced by Lyn Boberg and Patricia Tomlin.

Christian Education is important in the health of our church. It would not be possible without the devotion and time of our congregation. We want to thank all who has been involved in teaching as well as participants in the many programs and classes that are offered. Together, as followers in Christ, we can use our talents and gifts to serve God. Whatever God has given each of us, we must be willing to use.

Respectfully submitted,

Patricia Tomlin, Chairperson

The committee also provided support, supplies and assistance as needed for: fund-raisers presented by the youth groups, the Deacons' Hamburger Fry, Congregational potluck dinners, summer picnics and the All-Church Mission Dinner in November. In September Congregational Life provided two meals for Habitat for Humanity workers at their work site.

The committee wishes to thank all those people who helped with the very important church activity - After Church Fellowship hour.

Mission Committee Summary:

Congregational support of missions has been good through the years and this year is no exception. We as a church continue to improve in our giving and in work for missions. The action and coordination activities have not been limited to the Missions Committee but include several other committee and church organizations. Their missions effort in the summary reports. All groups are to be commended for their work this year. Our budgeted mission giving was 12.55% of the 1999 budget.

The Missions Committee membership has increased by two members this year to include Mell Peterson and Ann Miller. These persons have enhanced the Missions Committee with their talents, intelligence and dedication to service.

In 1999, Betty Gallaher's husband passed on and Hank Stephenson had lower-back surgery. Yet, the work of the committee proceeded in an exemplary manner. Much has been done and is continuing to be done. Mell Peterson volunteered to be interim Missions Committee chairman from August 1999 through November 1999 during Stephenson's recovery; and he performed this function very well.

Two international missionaries supported by First Presbyterian Church changed status

(101-Wickeri/China moved to the U.S.A. to teach at San Francisco Seminary and

103-Reasoner/Brazil retired.) We selected two other mission efforts to support in their place. These were 103-Green (Brazil) and 101-Harvey (Singapore). Also, we were able to fund these new-start missionaries at a little higher level since support to Haspels (Sudan) and Soldwisch (Mexico) could be reduced by $525.00 from $2100.00 each in 1999. Harvey was

supported at $2450.00 and Green was supported at $2800.00. These missionaries do not have a large support base. Both were originally funded by $2100.00 each. Bob Taylor did much work on this effort with input from Alex Burr.

Bob Taylor began authoring the periodic article "Beyond Our Walls" this year in the Lantern. This work has certainly served to better inform the congregation of the missionaries that FPC supports. Response from the congregation has been quite good.

Sunday food collections (sanctuary entrances) for Casa De Peregrinos has improved dramatically in 1999 and some of this can be attributed to the refrigerator magnet reminders developed by Betty Gallaher and distributed by the efficient church office staff. Our church members are good about bringing food: they just need a friendly reminder! Charlie Stone has dedicated himself to collecting the food and delivering it to Casa De Peregrinos.

A current mission statement for the Missions Committee was very much needed to define what the committee was all about and what duties were necessary to perform satisfactorily. Mell Peterson and Bob Taylor were instrumental in the development with input from Alex Burr. This mission statement was approved by Session in June 1999.

Ann Miller was the FPC contact person for Habitat for Humanity this year. In September 1999, FPC participated in the Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity building. Charlie Yaryan (Buildings and Grounds-FPC) was the team leader for the laborers. Other effort in support of this work included a bulletin board developed by Judith Ames providing information to the congregation concerning needed effort to accomplish the overall goal. Food was provided for the building crew by the Congregational Life Committee with Nancy French's coordination.

In lieu of a missions fair this year, the Missions Committee decided to prepare individual missionary posters to be presented at the Deacons Hamburger Fry in October 1999 and at the Annual Missions Night in November 1999. This was done and the posters seemed to be received well.

A guidance document from Presbytery was received that defines the recommended giving to Synod. Al Johnson is finalizing a letter from us to our Presbytery asking for clarification and expansion. Alex Burr has done much work on this letter as well. Al has also been very active in the committee and in communication with his assigned missionaries. Gordon Hoff has also been very dedicated to contributing at the mission committee meetings.

Special emphasis has been placed on updating the Missions Committee files at FPC. Everyone has his or her assigned missionary files at home where they need them but more emphasis is being placed on transferring archive files to the church mission record file. This effort is an on-going process and the files are looking much better.

This concludes the Missions Committee Summary Report.

Respectfully submitted,

Hank Stephenson, Chairperson

Session Committee: WORSHIP and MUSIC

Members: Jeff Kramer, Chairman, Elder; Gary Gemoets, Elder; Betsy Holt, Deacon; Bill McMillan, Choir Director; Howard Smolleck, Organist; Arnold McMillan, Donna Mathis, Bob Taylor, Mariann Novack, Jean O'Neill and John Poling, ex-officio.

This was our first full year with our new music staff. While things went well with the adult choir and organist, we were unsuccessful in our attempt to hire a person or persons to direct the youth, children, or bell choirs. Jackie Poling continues to volunteer her time as children's choir director. If you know of anyone who is interested in directing some or all of these choirs, have them come by the church office. The committee works with the music staff on a continuing basis to ensure that worship music continues to meet the needs of the congregation.

Communion was served once each month. World Communion Sunday, October 3, was celebrated with our second procession of flags representing the various countries throughout the world where our congregation supports missionaries.

The committee would like to thank everyone who devoted their time ensuring First Presbyterian Church provides a quality worship experience. Not everyone is aware of the effort that goes into preparing for worship including music, sermons, communion preparation and clean-up, sound system, and choir preparation, to name a few.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeff Kramer, Chairman

MEMORIAL STUDENT AID FUND

The first manse for First Presbyterian Church was built by funds raised by the first Ladies’ Aid Society about 1935. Eventually it was sold and $2000 was turned over to the College Circle. In 1969, the Menaul Student Aid Fund was established with the provision that the principal would remain intact and only the interest used for college scholarship aid. Through the years the principal has increased through memorial donations and funds transferred from Presbyterian Women. Currently, the funds are invested in The Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation.

The only requirement for receiving a scholarship from the Memorial Student Aid Fund is that the student be a member of First Presbyterian Church of Las Cruces. About 50 scholarships have been given over the years.

SALT AND LIGHT COMPANY

A Midweek Ministry for Children and Youth

This is a mid-week youth program which we started in January 1992. The Salt & Light Company is our name for the LOGOS International program held here on Wednesday afternoon and evening. This dynamic program currently has more than 50 children and youth enrolled, and their attendance is usually in the 90% range. We are mission members of LOGOS Associates, an international, interdenominational program of youth ministry. The elementary and Illuminate! choirs take part regularly in the worship service.

Many adult volunteers from the congregation make this program happen. They serve as table parents, team members on kitchen crews, Bible study teachers, arts and crafts helpers, recreation helpers and board members.

Members of the congregation are encouraged to visit on Wednesdays and find out for themselves what goes on from 4 - 8 P.M. They are also very welcome to help with an area of the program that interests them!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

OF LAS CRUCES FOUNDATION, INC.

Our local Foundation is a tax exempt corporation established to provide long-term financial support for the church, while allowing members to take advantage of the tax benefits that are possible through donations to the Foundation. The Foundation can accept gifts of marketable securities (stocks, bonds, etc.), real estate, or other appreciated property with significant tax advantages to the donor.

The members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation are Lynford Ames (president), James Parks (secretary), and Joel Tomlin. The Session has placed various memorial funds and other designated gifts under the management of the Foundation. The eventual expenditure of any of these funds will continue to reflect the wishes of the original donors. The Church Financial Secretary keeps a record of the designated gifts in the Foundation. An investment account for the Foundation has been established with Charles Schwab. The balance in the Schwab account at the start of 1999 was $54,676. It was $87,712 at the end of the year! Cash contributions totaled $2349 for the year.

In addition to the funds invested with Charles Schwab, the Foundation has several pieces of real property: Two lots in Deming (for which there is currently not much of a market), a home in Las Cruces, and a commercial property on the downtown mall. The home, which is rented, was mortgaged for 10 years at less than one-half its market value to help provide funds for paving the parking lots. The current rent of $875/month covers the $648.90/month mortgage payments as well as taxes and maintenance.

From the various funds and assets held in the foundation a total of $70,805.622 was contributed to projects such as paving of the parking lots, upgrading the sound system in Watkins Hall and providing camp scholarships for students during 1999.

Respectfully submitted,

Lynford Ames, President
