"WAITING
FOR GODOT" AUDITIONS
Auditions
for Waiting for Godot will be held April 6 and 7 at the Black Box
Theatre, 430 N Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. Four men (any ages)
and one boy (8-12 years old) are needed. Boys will audition at 6
p.m.; men, at 7 p.m. both nights. All actors must be willing to
perform broad physical comedy, including some light dancing and
not so light falling on the ground. As this play will be performed
in the courtyard, "falling on the ground" means just that,
though safety precautions will be taken. Actors will read from the
script and are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
The
Story
Two
clowns, Estragon and Vladimir, are waiting for someone-a Mr. Godot-by
the side of a road near a fruitless tree. As they ponder and discuss
the ailments of life, the two men are approached by a boy-a messenger
sent daily by the reclusive Godot who tells the clowns that his
employer will not be coming today. Maybe tomorrow. In the meantime,
two other fellows cross the clowns' path: Pozzo, an arrogant and
long-winded traveler, in tow of his harnessed manservant, Lucky,
bags in hand and rope around neck.
Samuel
Beckett wrote this tragicomedy in French originally and saw it first
produced in Paris in 1953. A year later, the play was published
in English, translated by the author. In January 1955, the English
stage produced the play in its new language. This year marks the
play's 50th anniversary.
Auditions
will be cold readings from the text. A script will be on reserve
at Branigan Reference Desk after March 1. For further information
e-mail the director, Scott Lunsford at sslunsford@zianet.com.
