Labor Day Ride

Black Range Horsemanship Camp

Now is the time to plan for a great summer adventure at the Black Range Horsemanship Camp, located in the beautiful Cuchillo Mountains of New Mexico.  One camp session is offered for boys and girls ages 8 through high school graduation.   All skill levels of horsemanship instruction is available from the beginning rider to the advanced. 

We have a seasoned staff led by Greg Evans, a nationally certified camp director.  Greg Evans Greg has over 50 years of horsemanship and camp experience and has been operating the Black Range Horsemanship Camp since 1991. 

Camp Program
Camp begins with Sunday supper in the beautiful lodge at the camp facility located on the scenic Chihenne Ranch in the majestic Cuchillo Mountains near Winston and Chloride New Mexico.  The Chihenne ranch has over 8000 acres to ride and explore.  The ranch has numerous Indian sites, with some dating back to before 1200 A.D., complete with petroglyphs.   Besides lots of horseback riding and instruction there are numerous other exciting activities for all ages.

Camp Program Includes:

  • Horseback Riding 
  • Arts and Crafts 
  • Indian Lore
  • Hiking
  • Sports and Games
  • Rifle Shooting
  • Skeet Shooting (older campers)
  • Archery
  • Drama, Skits and Dancing
  • Field Trips to: (the Gila National Forest, a Ghost Town, a Silver Mine and cave if conditions permit).
  • Cattle Drive  (if range conditions permit)
  • Cattle Branding (if range conditions permit)

On the last day of camp each camper has an opportunity to participate in a play day rodeo as well as other "tribal" games to be able to show the camp their newly acquired skills. Campers sleep in shelters or bunkhouses on cots. Parents are invited on the last day of camp for parents night, dinner and campfire.

2024 Camp Session:

July 7 through July 13, 2024  - $600.00


A deposit of $100 is required to reserve a space at camp.  There are some   partial camperships available on a per need basis. Contact the Black Range Camp to see if you qualify.  To register for camp, please print the registration form and mail it to the address below.
