Chapter 3: Chemistry and Chemicals
STANDARDS
PRIORITY STANDARDS:
Classify matter in a variety of ways (element, compound, homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures; solid, liquid, gas).
Identify, measure, and use a variety of physical and chemical properties (electrical conductivity, density, chemical reactivity, melting point).
Know how to use properties to separate mixtures into pure substances (distillation, chromatography, solubility).
Describe trends in properties (ionization energy or reactivity as a function of location on the periodic table).
Know that states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) depend on the arrangement of atoms and molecules and on their freedom of motion (Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter).
OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVE (SWBAT):
Define the term chemistry and identify substances as chemicals.
Identify physical properties and distinguish the properties of most metals.
Differentiate between substances, mixtures, and elements.
Given the name of an element, write its symbol; from the symbol, write the name.
Understand each elements has a unique set of physical properties; identify physical properties.
Define and describe the states of matter.
Define and describe changes of state.

BIG IDEAS:
Our world is composed of chemicals.
Chemicals can be substances, mixtures, or elements
Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down by chemical means.
Elements are represented by chemical symbols.
Each element has a unique set of physical properties.
All matter on Earth exists as solids, liquids, or gases.
The addition or subtraction of heat can change matter from one form to another.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS (SWBATA):
What is chemistry?  What are chemicals?
What is the difference between substances, mixtures, and elements?
Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down by chemical means.
Elements are represented by chemical symbols.
Each element has a unique set of physical properties.
In what physical states does matter exist?
How can matter be changed from one form to another?
