Sources:
1.  Immediate family of Malry Johnson, Sr., and Malry Johnson, Jr.
2.  Various U. S. Census documents
3.  On 3 Jul 2007, we found Janice Stensrude's collection, Mostly Blanco County Families (See bottom of this page.) Portions taken therefrom are presented here in this purple color.
4. As of 4 Jul 2007, there is still some data to be transcribed from Ms. Stensrude's file--see yellow copy at bottom of page.
5. On 24 Mar 2008, I had the privilege and delight of meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Malry (Gerry) Johnson, Sr., to go through with them printouts I had made of this page. I have added his additions, corrections, and comments throughout where indicated in this green: [Malry Sr. Note:].

23.00-James Johnson, Sr., b. ca. 1774 in colonial VA; d. aft. 1860 [John M. Gwin Note: Chris Johnson says: d. 29 Jun 1869 in Texas. We speculate that this is the father of Frances J. "Frank" Johnson, since he was living next door to Frank and Betsy at the age of 86 in the home of James' son, James Jr., in the 29 Jun 1860 census of Llano Co., TX.  In Sep 2009, Chris Johnson says that indeed our speculation is correct.]; [listed as Jas Johnson, age 76 and b. in VA, in the 13 Sep 1850 census of Sabine Parish, LA]; d. 29 Jun 1869 in TX; m. unk. [Leanna Veazey says m. Louisa?.]; at least 5 ch.

24.01--Sarah Jane Johnson, b. 30 Mar 1811 in IL [listed as Jane Reeves, age 39 and b. in IL, in the 13 Sep 1850 census of Sabine Parish, LA]; d. 1875; bd. unk.; m.  Green B. Reeves (b. 8 Jan 1809 [listed as Green Reeves, age 42 and b. in KY, in the 13 Sep 1850 census of Sabine Parish, LA]; d. 26 Feb 1884; bd. unk.); 5 known ch.

25.01-- William Reeves, b. ca. 1831 in TX [listed as William Reeves, age 19 and b. in TX, in the 13 Sep 1850 census of Sabine Parish, LA]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

25.05-- A. M. Reeves, male, b. ca. 1844 in TX [listed as A. M. Reeves, male, age 6 and b. in TX, in the 13 Sep 1850 census of Sabine Parish, LA]; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

[John M. Gwin Note: While looking for Green and Sarah Jane and their children in later censuses (i.e., after 1850), I found two men, ages 11 years apart (just as they were in Sabine Parish, LA, in 1850) and living next door to each other near Gonzalez P. O. in Gonzales Co., TX:

(1) a William F. Reeves, 30, and his wife M. J., 23, with four children: M. J., 7, George G., 5, Eliza, 2 or 3, and Franklin, 1, and
(2) a
George Reeves, 19, and his wife Lycana (19).

Whether these are indeed the sons of Green and Sarah Jane is uncertain at this point, but they certainly match at several points, each of which increases the possiblility of accuracy.  If anyone is able to determine where the Reeves went from their Sep 1850 location in Sabine Parish, LA, please let me know at jmcdgwin@zianet.com.  Thanks!]

24.02--Lewis Johnson, b. 1811; d. 6 Mar 1836; died defending the Alamo; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

[Leanna B. [Sharron's Note: Dad's mom was Willie Gordon and was married to Roy Johnson... They had 4 sons that lived to adulthood, Robert, Harold, Malry and Clinton. I don't recall William and Samuel although they could have been some of the kids that died younger. The only daughter that I have ever heard mentioned was Chloe who died in a house fire when she was only a young girl... 11 or 12, I think.  Grandma Johnson died when dad was only about 9 or 10, so that would have been just about 1930??

By 1920 they were living in Caballo, New Mexico, because Dad was born there, and he was born in 1920. Dad and Gerry are gone for the summer, and getting him to sit down and discuss his family is like pulling his teeth. *laughs*  He keeps telling me to stop finding more of his relatives.  *shrugs*  Perhaps we could all corral him when he gets home and bombard him with questions.  I'll also mention to Gerry that maybe she could get Dad to tell her his tree and she could write it down for us... she would do that, and Dad would be more apt to talk to her, I think....

I do know that Roy had a twin brother, Ray.  And Ray was married to Willie's sister, but I can't remember her name right off the top of my head.  Dad's grandma Gordon pretty much raised him and the other boys.. Robert was married, I think, when his mom died, but Harold, Dad and Clinton were still young and at home.  Robert died in 1970 in Flagstaff, Arizona, and is buried in Winslow. He had 2 daughters, Mary and Betty.  I think Mary lives in Deming and I think her last name is Raley... Malene would know that because she used to work with Malene.  Betty died several years ago.  If you could find Mary you would have a plethora of information, I think..]

Hello Malry,

My name is Leanna Burgess Veazey, and my great-grandfather was Fred Washington Johnson, brother to your Roy Clinton Johnson.  I tried to contact you through Ancestry but wasn't successful. If you are still working on your Johnson family heritage, I would love to share info with you. The children (and many descendents) of Frank and Betsy (Townsend) Johnson have been well documented, and there are a few of us who are still researching the continuing generations.

Would love to hear from you,
Leanna

Hello, Leanna! Thanks for sending all the good family information. I put that email at the bottom of the page and am listing (in the outline above in this gold color) everything you sent.  John

Hello John,
To answer your question concerning the tombstones of Lucy and Minnie Johnson;
Lucy E. Johnson is indeed the first child born to Lite Stapleton Johnson and Wincie Henley Miller Modgling Johnson.
Lucy died at the age of 9, death date should be 1913 not 1918.
I am sure the tombstone was hard to read and the 3 was deciphered as an 8.
She died of complications due to diabetes.

Minnie Henley Johnson is actually Annie Henley Johnson and is the daughter of

Wincie Henley Miller and Isaac Newton Modgling                                Lite Stapleton Johnson and Nancy Texana "Nan" Reeves

Rosie Ruby Modgling                                     and                                     Walter Stapleton Johnson.

Annie Henley Johnson                                                               Annie Henley Johnson

Rosie is the daughter of Wincie Henley Miller and Isaac Newton Modgling (Wincie's first marriage).
Walter Stapleton is the son of Lite Stapleton Johnson and Nancy Texana "Nan" Reeves (Lite's first marriage).
So Walter and Annie were step-siblings.
Hope this helps.
Leanna

Hello--like to start by saying my name is Danny Johnson, my dad is Paul Johnson Jr., his father is Paul J., and  Lite was my great-granddad.  My dad had little info on his family. My granddad Paul was about all he knew. He did meet Lite and spoke to him a little and knew that he was buried Fiskville Cemetery in Austin, Texas. And that's how I started my family search on the Johnsons. It's been more history than I ever expected, so if you have any info. to share on Lite, it would be appreciated. God bless.

Subject: Family research

Looks like we have some people in common. Yes, James Johnson, Sr., was Francis' father. How do I know? I've been doing this type of research since I was a Junior in high school, 27 yrs ago (I'm now 44).

My name is Chris "Chip" Johnson. I am related to the Johnsons by way of direct lineage:

I began my genealogy research from some information I received from Dr. Johnie Lee Reeves (of Austin, TX -- relates through my 2nd great grandmother). Since I had some "road blocks" in the research, I had a subscription to Ancestry.com. I found a bunch of information through that web site. I also had to do some merging and correcting some errors.

What I'm attempting to do now is to re-introduce myself to other researchers, so we can merge information together and get a better picture of the family as a whole.

Something you might not know, but through Elizabeth "Betsy" Townsend we relate as a descendant, to King Robert I of France. There are other famous relations, but I didn't want to toss that information on you to begin with.

I am willing to work with all of the family researchers, so if I can assist in any way, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Chris "Chip" Johnson

P.S. Dad didn't want a Jr. in the family, but Chip off the "Ol' block" was OK with him.

[John M. Gwin Note: I also found Chris' post at Genforum.com and copied it below]

And now we know him to be the same as 24.03--Frank Johnson in the outline above.  Definitely an ancestor, he is the father of 25.08--John Washington Johnson, the grandfather of 26.06--Roy Johnson, the great-grandfather of 27.04--Malry Jonson, Sr., the gg-grandfather of 28.02--Malry Johnson, Jr., the ggg-grandfather of 29.03--Jason Johnson, Sr., and the gggg-grandfather of generation 30: JD, Ryan, Tate, Zachary, Mia, and Bryton!

This is the obviously the father of  the above James; however, since they're right next door to each other with the same size/value of farms, I highly suspect that James, Sr., is the father of Frances as well.  If he is, we can trace the families' migration route from Virginia to Illinois to Arkansas to Texas.

Frances is the father of William, 19, and John, 5; however, we don't know for sure yet which one of these--indeed, if either--is the John (William) Johnson who appears in the 1880 census below.  My search of Ancestry.com uncovered only one Frances Johnson in Llano Co. in this census, however, leading me to believe that one or the other of them is most likely the same John (William) Johnson.

In 1850 he is listed as William J. Johnson. He's also found in 1870--see below.  [This small x stands for "Attended school within the year," and so for the other five as well.]

This must be the father-to-be of twins Roy and Ray. The only evidence I have in that regard, however, is his name, age, and geographical location. Further, I cannot find him in 1870; only in 1880 do I have the correct John Johnson, 25. But Janice Stensrude says that this is he, so she must have other evidence that I do not, and I present him here as her find.

This has to be the same William Johnson (son of Frank and Elizabeth) who was 19 in the 1860 census and 9 in 1850. He is the right age and is living in Llano Co. not far from where his brother Asa was found (see above). But where is their brother John who was five in1860 and should be 15 here?

We are discovering John and Liza to be the "furthest back persons" we have for sure--to date--in this line so far; they are two of the ggg-grandparents of Malry Jr.'s and my grandsons!  Thanks to Janice Stensrude for the tip on where to look!    :-)

And now, Dec 2009, we know that this 25.08--John Washington (not William) Johnson is a grandson of our most recent"furthest back person", James Johnson of colonial Virginia!

This is Malry, Sr.'s, father and Malry, Jr.'s, grandfather. Janice Stensrude states on her page (see bottom of this page) that Roy appears here with "2 brothers & 3 half siblings",  thus indicating (1) that John is not the father of the oldest of the three children--William, Ceilly, and John--and (2) that the census taker erred in not calling these children step-siblings.

This is the first we've heard of Claude and Alta. We'll have to ask Malry Sr. about them when he gets back from his vacation this summer. (Later:) OK, now we've seen Claude in 1900, 1910, and 1920--definitely one of the ten children.

This certainly looks like it could be Roy's dad, John William Johnson (the "E" here could be a W).  It also could be that he was told "Johnny" ("Johnny"--not "John E.--is the middle name of Malry, Sr. and Malry, Jr., so it is not illogical that it could've come from this grandpa to Malry, Sr., and that John told the census taker  "Johnny" who misunderstood it to be "John E.".

Roy reports that he is married (as opposed to widowed or divorced), yet she is not in this picture. But Sharron wrote to say she died when her dad--Malry Sr., was only about 9-10, so that's ca. 1930. We're thinking she had only died very recently when this census was taken.
As you can see, Roy--residence #19--was living right between two of his brothers-in-law and one house away from his parents-in-law. This census showed that he was paying them only $3.00 a month rent for living on the Gordon family ranch--a real gift in just about ANY economy!

Subject: Re: Your Johnson Line

Hi John,

Dad's mom was Willie Gordon and was married to Roy Johnson... Grandma Johnson died when dad was only about 9 or10, so that would have been just about 1930??

If you could find Mary you would have a plethora of information, I think..

In God's Love,
Sharron

Hey, John...yes, Roy was Grandpa Johnson's name...In the 1920's this Johnson clan was living in the Caballo, N.M. area... Grandpa and Grandma had moved from Texas recently before... somewhere in the Commanche River area, I think...My dad was born in Sept. of 1920 (Robert, Samuel, Harrold and a sister, I believe, were older) and his mother died when he was about seven years old... soon after that, my Grandpa and Robert, maybe, Harrold, Malry and William Clinton along with one of Grandpa's brothers, moved to Alamogordo by driving all their cattle across the Jornada to Organ Pass and on over to Alamogordo... Robert might have already been out cowboying on his own by then...I know he said he was on a round-up when one night his Mother's horse ran through camp while all were asleep, and he knew he needed to get home... his mother was dying; Samuel might have been a brother who died very young, and there was a sister a little older than my dad who died when my dad was only about three or four; she got her dress on fire while their mother was making soap in a kettle outside on a wood fire and she died as a result of severe burns... Robert married Aunt Nettie and Harrold married Aunt Dorothy... Malry married Clora Cordellia McGinn and William Clinton married Emma.  Grandpa Roy donated the land for the Caballo Cemetery to the township of Caballo, so there might be some info to be gleaned from that...

O.K., here's the scoop...Grandpa Johnson was Roy Johnson, Grandma was Willie (Gordon) Johnson whose father was John Gordon and mother was Mallie Backus... the brother to Grandpa I mentioned earlier was a twin to Grandpa and his name was Ray Johnson; he apparently never married... so far this is all I have been able to dig up... I'm sure Dad would talk with you... they should be back from their annual summer pilgrimage to the "cooler" country about Sept.    Let us hear what you find... Malry and Millie

[John M. Gwin Note: I am grateful to Marilyn Poitras for her provision of the information found at this excellent website, portions of which I have highlighted here as pertaining to the Gordon and Johnson families presented on this page http://www.interment.net/data/us/nm/sierra/caballo/caballo.htm]

Caballo Cemetery, Sierra County, New Mexico

Lat: 32°55'27"N, Lon: 107°19'09"W

Contributed by Marilyn Poitras, Oct 24, 2001 [lavelle@zianet.com]. Total records = 51.

The little town of Caballo (it means "horse" in Spanish--pronounced KAH BAH YO) is located approximately 15 miles south of Truth or Consequences, NM, on Hwy 187.

This is still an active cemetery, but with no sexton or phone. It is a typical "western" cemetery with rocky soil, wooden crosses, and circles of stones. If you stop by the Caballo Store, they can give directions to the cemetery. [John M. Gwin Note: As highlighted in red in the e.mail above from Malry Johnson, Jr., he states that the land for this cemetery was donated to the Town of Caballo his own grandfather, Roy Johnson.]

All visible graves have been listed, but as with all old cemeteries, there are those unmarked graves. In 1938 the Caballo Dam was built, and water began to cover the homes of the early settlers. They moved their homes to the foothills on the west side of the Rio Grande.

These records show all visible burial sites in the Caballo Cemetery, which were compiled on 18 Nov 1994 by the Sierra County Genealogical Society, then published in a book. I have transcribed from this book, after being given permission by the society, so it could be published on the internet.

Other books available regarding Sierra County records may be purchased by contacting: Sierra County Genealogical Society, c/o Truth or Consequences Public Library, Truth or Consequences, NM 8790l

These are my working papers. Very little has been proved by me. Consider this a compilation of possibilities. Some of the "Abt" dates are my best wild guess and not based on census or other data. If your Blanco County ancestors are related to anyone in this database, I'd love to add your information. In any event, your comments and corrections are invited.

    Hiya John,

I looked over your page again and I think I can fill in a few blanks for you; if I overlap anything you already have forgive me.  Here goes:

Willie Loralee Gordon was born Mar 24, 1890 in High Rolls, Otero Co., NM and died Nov 10, 1929 in Caballo, Sierra Co., NM.

Ray Clifford, Roy's twin brother married Willie's sister, Lola Inez Gordon, she was born 1889 and died Jul 3, 1916, in Almagordo, Otero Co., NM. Ray died Nov 11, 1918 in Carr Cannon, Otero Co., NM from Pneumonia/Infuenza. When he died his children were left orphans and lived with different Uncles on and off.

    Ray and Lola's children are:

1.Lonnie Charles b. Nov 26, 1905 in Almagordo and died Aug 6 1940 in Grass Valley, CA
    2. Lola Vita b. Oct 9, 1908 in Sierra Co., NM and died May 23, 2000 in Otero Co., NM she married first Edwin Buck Sellars and second Ted Johnson.
    3. Ollie A. (middle name is probably Alfred) b. Feb 26, 1911 in Reserve, Otero Co., NM and died Dec 10, 1979 in Sierra Co., NM. I am not sure who his wife was, but he had one son that I know of Ollie M. born May 15, 1931 and died Jul 12, 2003 in Sierra Co., NM.

Willie Loralee and Lola Inez were daughters of John Riley Gordon and Eliza Mallory "Mallie" Backues.
Mallie was the daughter of (hang on, this might be confusing) John Keeney "Jacob" Bacues and Sarah Gibson.  John Keeney Backues was the first husband of Eliza Stone (his second wife) and she married John Washington Johnson after J.K.B. died in 1874.

Now you know where Malry got his name from; he was named after his maternal grandmother.

John K. Backues and Eliza Stone had three children:
[JMG Note: The fact that his middle name is Keeney--my mother's maiden name--leads me to search for his ancestors to see if there's a connection.]

Hope this helps fill in some blanks.  If you want more on the Stone family let me know. I also have more on the Backues family if you want.
Also I have seen Roy's death year given as 1948, but I haven't ever been able to find a death record for him. My mother thought she remembered visiting Roy in the summer before her sophomore year in high school which would have been abt 1957, she thought he died shortly after that, but now I think she may have been mistaken and she could be talking about Claude Robert, since he died in 1966.  Does the family have any knowledge as to Roy's death date.

Let me know what else I can help you with,

    Leanna
