Some time back, the late Kathy Kemp contacted me concerning a post I'd left somewhere--probably GenForum--regarding Nathaniel Burdine Wilson, my g-g-g-grandfather.  Seems that she had an Ezekiel Burdine Wilson who'd married a Rasco, but could get nowhere laterally or behind him (EBW).  As I had nothing laterally or behind my Nathaniel, there was little I felt I could do, and we put each other on the back burners of our files.

Then in July 2000 I met the widow, Barbara, of my fourth cousin, Roy L. Smith, and she mailed me a copy of an index to a Civil-War-era photograph album inherited by and in the possession of another cousin, Barbara Ward.  All three of us descend from and are working the line of Nathaniel Burdine Wilson, and most of the names in the album's index were familiar to us as his descendants, in-laws, and even one "Outlaw".  One of the unidentified names in the index caught my eye--a Mrs. Rasco.

I contacted Kathy Kemp again, and we compared notes more closely. For the following reasons, both of us felt (and I am now convinced) these two men--Nathaniel Burdine Wilson and Ezekiel Burdine Wilson--were brothers:

1.  the discovery of this Rasco reference;
2.  the Burdine middle names;
3.  the appearance of both names on the 1820 census for Limestone Co., AL;
4.  the appearance of both names on the 1830 census for Dallas Co., AL;
5.  the appearance of both names on several legal documents; and
6.  the downline intermarriages of other family members.
Among other things, this means Kathy (and her sister Neil) and I are fifth cousins. The parallel-lines chart at the bottom of this page clearly shows this.

Cemetery at Salem Baptist Church
Kellis Store, Kemper Co., Mississippi
Final resting place of many descendants of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson and Sarah H. Rasco
Above: I felt like I had to enlarge this to show you the arrangement of the graves. In the foreground are some unmarked gravestones that are obviously those of an older time. Perhaps there was no stonemason or marble worker available at the deaths of these eight people. But it is very interesting and significant to me that the two farthest to the right are directly in line with the row of graves that extends to the left, beginning with the broken stone with the yellow flower in front of it. It appears that the graves in that line to the left are in generational order, the broken stone being that of E. B. Wilson II (see closeup, second above), the next being that of his wife, E. A. Wilson, then descending generationally as the line moves left. If this is true, then it makes perfect sense to me that those first two unmarked rocks in that line are the graves of Washington Wilson and his wife Mahalie!

To find this cemetery
, here are two sets of instructions, the first if traveling by car, the second if online:

1. The county seat of Kemper Co. is DeKalb, MS. From the intersection of Routes 39 and 16 in DeKalb, go east almost three miles to Route 397, which take in a northeasterly direction about 8.6 miles to Lynville. Only one road intersects Route 397 at Lynville. Take that road to the right--in a northnortheastly direction at first, then almost due east--for 3.4 miles, at which point turn left. This will almost immediately bear right again and open into the well-kept, chainlink-fenced cemetery on your right.

2. This link will take you to a TopoZone USGS map of Kellis Store, Kemper Co., MS, which is where the Salem Baptist Church and cemetery are located.]

* We're convinced this is our EBW, since his brother, Nathaniel Burdine Wilson (listed as NB Wilson), is also there, and because the one child listed here is a male under age 5--close to the age of our EBW's firstborn.
In Jan 2008, I learned that Wilson genealogist Julia Burton believes that Ezekiel and Nathaniel were born in this same location, since Limestone Co. was still in the state of SC in 1800!

Lillie, Apr 1890;
These three children are evidently the tail end of the family of E. B. and Estella A. Baxter Wilson

19 Jun 1900 Kellis Store, Kemper Co., MS Allen Hutton, 50, b. May 1850 in AL;

Allie N., 11, son, May 1889;
Etta M., 8, dau, Oct 1891;
Virgie V., 6, dau, Apr. 1894;
We know from the 9 Mar 1920 census of Sunflower Co., MS, that Agnes is Virgie's older sister, since Virgie Hutton, 24 (actually 26), sister-in-law, is living in the home of Robert B. and Agnes Hutton Wilson. In June 1900, Agnes would have been 16-17 years old, so she is likely the brand new bride of Robert B. Wilson. Adding credibility to this is the date of birth of their firstborn, Roger O. Wilson, ca. 1902.
27.03--Bettie L. Wilson, dau, b. Nov. 1898 [1 in 22 Jun 1900 census of Kellis Store, Kemper Co., MS; age 11 in 18 Apr 1910 census of Philadelphia, Neshoba Co., MS; age 21 in 12 Jan 1920 census of Philadelphia, Neshoba Co., MS]; d. unk.; [descendants possible]

Hutton; d. unk., bd. unk.);

[JMG Note: Robert is either the 4th-, 5th-, or 6th-born child of Ezekiel and Estella, since she reported in the 1910 census that she'd had nine kids and two were still living (Att and Lillie, who were living with her at the time).];

 [JMG Note: Since Agnes and Virginia (see 1920 census chart below) are sisters and the daughters of Joseph and Fannie Wilson Hutton (4.05 below), then Agnes Mahala Hutton is the first cousin of her husband, Robert Brazile Wilson.]

Hi John,
My grandmother was Lillie Florence (Wilson) Cook. My mother was Augusta Clytee Cook.
I live in Grass Valley, California. I have traveled to Alabama and Mississippi to visit family and to visit all the cemeteries and archives possible. I've also gone to Salt Lake City, UT, to the Mormon church to do a lot of research. Lucky for me all my ancestors, so far, came to the US from Scotland, England, and Ireland. I didn't have to learn to read another language to decipher old foreign records. My husband, John, studied German so he could read the old records.
Thanks for keeping me updated.  Hope you have a great holiday season,
Sincerely,
Brenda Faye (Purvis) Preuss

     Above are Mr. and Mrs. Starlen A. Wilson

Esther Watkins. He is a g-grandson of William Jackson "Jack" Wilson, once thought by Kathy and Neil to be a brother of Nathaniel B. and Ezekiel B., but thought by Starlen and Esther to be a brother (or half-brother) of Washington "Wash" Wilson (and therefore a
son of Ezekiel B.).

      I traced Starlen's line back through the various censuses, then spoke on the phone with Mrs. Esther Wilson who confirmed the trace. Below are some results of that search.

     Oh yes, and speaking of Nathaniel Burdine Wilson, do you notice any resemblences between Starlen (above) and him (right)?

This is our Ezekiel Burdine Wilson and his unnamed wife and son, the latter of whom we once thought to be Washington "Wash" Wilson and now know could not be.  Now we believe this may be William Jackson "Jack" Wilson (see 1860 census below).  Jack was born about 1820 so must have been only a few months old in this census.

These are Ezekiel's older brother, Nathaniel Burdine Wilson (and my own gggg-grandpa), Nathaniel's wife Jane Jones, and their six oldest children: sons John Jones Wilson (1819), Ezekiel Monroe Wilson (1825), William Bramwell Wilson (1827), and Joseph Jones Abernathy Wilson (1830);  and daughters Mary Burdine Wilson (1816) and Roseann Carlisle Jones Wilson (1822, my ggg-grandma).

These are Ezekiel Burdine Wilson, his wife Sarah, and their four oldest children. Who those children are can be told from their known ages in other censuses. We know the youngest has to be Nathaniel B., who was b. ca. 1828 and would be around 2 here.  The next has to be Washington "Wash", b. ca. 1825 and ca. age 5 here. So who the two older children are--listed here as a boy age 10-14 and a girl age 5-9--is unknown for now.  HOWEVER, William Jackson Wilson, the ancestor of Starlen A. Wilson, was b. about 1820 and would've been ca. age 10 in this 1830 census! A slight discrepancy exists between the 1830 and 1840 censuses: 1830 declares the two mystery children to be male and female, but 1840 calls them both male. Nevertheless, that two children older than Wash exist seems clear and established.

I have no idea who this is, but at first glance, it appeared as though the Wm. Jackson "Jack" Wilson family were living with him, and so I began recording his family's data. However, when I noticed that the family after Wm. J. Wilson was # 760/760, I realized that the census taker, Ass't Marshal Philemon N. Gully, had merely failed to record the number for the Wilsons. Or had he? Was there another reason he had not written down the numbers? Were these families actually living together? Was Frances Beck formerly a Wilson and sister of Jack? Or were Frances and Jane sisters who had married Mr. Beck and Mr. Wilson?

She also told me that the family believes that Jack is possibly/likely/probably/thought-to-be/but not-yet-proven-to-be a brother of "Wash" (Washington) Wilson, who, as we know, is the son of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson, brother of Nathaniel Burdine Wilson, who is my own ggg-grandpa. Indeed, the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses (above) confirm that Ezekiel B. Wilson had at least one son older than Wash, and this Jack fits the picture perfectly.

I think this is probably Lon's father. The POB does not align itself with Lon's report of Lon's father, but that can be attributed to Lon's probable ignorance of the matter. Also, in 1870 this person is called John, but perhaps his full name is John William Something Wilson...

This is John H. Rasco, son of Wm. E. and Mary Ann Elizabeth Wilson Rasco--daughter of E. B. Wilson I and Sarah H. Rasco Wilson. His identity is confirmed by the presence in the home of his 12-year-old sister with the apparently unspellable name.

This could be the son of Ezekiel B. and Sarah H. Wilson, last seen in the 1850 census of Cahaba (above). However, our James M. Wilson was in Leake Co., MS, at the probate of his father's death, so perhaps this is not he.

Morning John, Good to hear from you again!  I checked with Neil to make sure how our grandfather's middle name was spelled, and you have it correct: BRAZILE. However, sometimes people would spell it BRAZALE, which I did on my second note. Sorry. That name I have seen spelled several different ways, but "Papa" spelled his BRAZILE.

One of his children was named EDNA BRAZILE WILSON and another ALLEN BYRD WILSON. ROBERT BRAZILE (papa) & AGNES MaHALA HUTTON (grandma) were first cousins. There is a book in printing stage now on the HUTTON-WILSON line. Do you have HUTTON in your family tree?  How about DeLOACH? Golly, guess I should stop here!  Hehee.

Are you in touch with a Patricia (Patty) Taylor?  She also is a direct descendant of Nathaniel through EZEKIEL MONROE WILSON.  She is a wonderful person and we have shared lots of info.

I will park this pc for a while.

Blessings,
Kathy

Hi John,

Good to hear from you!  Have missed talking to you!

James R. Rasco is the one who corrected me on two or three of the mistakes I had made on Ezekiel B. Wilson, and was I happy that I posted!  For he is the one who took me into Ala. and the correct info which I sent to you.  Here is what I have on him.

He lives in Harvey, LA, a suburb of New Orleans. He's lived there most of his life, he says, although he also lived in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico when he was younger.  His father was born in west Texas, and his mother was born in central Arkansas although she was raised in North Texas. He has not spent much time on the Wilson line, only when it involved the Rasco line. But he really had some great info on the Wilson line for me.

There are online sites that have his ancestors posted. He says that most of the postings were posted by distant cousins of mine and mostly on The FamilyTreeMaker. Pages where you can find them are at <http://www.familytreemaker.com/ifftop.html>   Look for the descendants of Captain WILLIAM RASCO or RASCOE or BENJAMIN VANDERSLICE.

NATHANIEL BURDINE WILSON (II) was b. about 1827 in Ala. He was a son of EZEKIEL B. WILSON & SARAH H. RASCO

(see 1850 Census of Dallas County, Cahaba Beat, sheet 273-B, dwelling number 612, family number 613);
(see also the estate settlement of JESSE RASCO, Dallas Co. Probate Court records book"D" page 391-398, March 20, 1840);
(see also the estate settlement of JESSE RASCO [son of the previous JESSE] and in particular the letters to the Probate Court by the widow Martha F. Rasco naming heirs and relatives of JESSE RASCO, d. 24 Jan 1870).
MARY JANE FISHER m. JOHN ALTON RASCO 4 Aug 1857 (see Dallas County Marriage Book "A" page 196).

JOHN ALTON RASCO d. 4 Jul 1865 [see (1) estate settlement recorded in the Dallas Co., Ala. Probate Court and (2) tombstone in the Rasco family graveyard near Marion Junction].

N. B. Wilson married Mrs. Mary J. Rasco 14 Sep 1865 (see Dallas County Marriage Book "F" page 15).

Dallas County Probate Court records of 27 Sep 1865 "in the matter of the estate of JOHN A. RASCO, dec'd...The undersigned, administrator of the estate, begs leave to state that he was appointed administrator of the said estate, that the heirs of the said dec'd are his three Children, viz: Edith, Ida and John Rasco under the age of 14 years, and reside with their mother, Mrs. MARY J. WILSON appointed guardian of Rasco children on Feb. 26, 1868.

Misc. Documents pertaining to the children of JOHN A. RASCO filed in the Probate Court of Dallas Co. show statement submitted to the probate court concerning the guardianship by EZEKIEL M(onroe). WILSON of the children of JOHN A. RASCO sr., dated 31 Dec 1869, shows EDITH RASCO has died; JOHN A. RASCO, jr, is the only remaining child.  Mrs. MARY J. WILSON is now
signing her name as MARY J. BOOTH; report subscribed before W.T. JONES, J.P. 10 Aug 1870.

John Alton Rasco, Jr.--1870 Census of Dallas Co. AL, lists in the household of E. M. RASCO, Jr., is her son by her first husband JOHN ALTON RASCO, Sr.    MARY J. WILSON  was soon to become Mrs. T. H. BOOTH, if she was not already married to him.  They all moved to El Paso, White Co., AR,  before the 1880 census was taken.  The young boy and only surviving child of JOHN ALTON RASCO, Sr., was b. Dallas Co. AL, 1 Dec 1865; d. Saint Charles, Arkansas Co., AR, 5 May 1942; m. Maggie Edwards 26 Dec 1886 in White Co. AR ( Book "G" page 559).  She was b. 13 Apr 1870 near Beebe, AR; d. WILLIAM EPHRAIM RASCO, b. Aug 1860 Dallas Co., AL
JAMES MARION RASCO, b. 27 Nov 1862 Dallas Co., AL
MARTHA TULLEN RASCO, b. 13 Jul 1866 Dallas Co. AL
JOHN HAMPTON RASCO, b. 16 Dec 1855 Dallas Co., AL
Following the death of WILLIAM EPHRAIM RASCO which occured in Dallas Co., Ala. on Nov. 2, 1866, MARY ANN  married a man named JOSEPH S. DRAPERS on April 5, 1869.

James writes,

"I have no proven facts concerning this second marriage but have been told that JOSEPH DRAPERS took MARY ANN and her children to Kemper County Mississippi and abandoned them there.   Mary Ann had received her dowery portion of the estate of William Ephraim Rasco.  Speculations are that Drapers took advanage of this and ran away with any monies she may have had."  The story continues that EDWARD HAMPTON RASCO, her former brother-in-law, came to Mississippi and brought the family back to Alabama.

My 1870 the court records in Dallas County still probating the estate of William Ephraim Rasco shows that Mary Ann was back in Mississippi and was the wife of James Lafayette Rasco.  James Lafayette Rasco was a son of Edward Hampton Rasco and a nephew of William Ephraim Rasco as well as a second cousin of Mary Ann's.  James Lafayette Rasco was several years younger than Mary Ann which makes it seem strange that they would have married.  I have never found an actual marriage records for them.  The Dallas County Probate record that shows Mary Ann as being the wife of James Layfayette
Rasco is dated August 31, 1870. When the 1870 census was taken, Mary Ann was enumerated in Nashoba County Mississippi with some of her children and a black servant.  Some of her older children were living on nearby farms and were working on these farms.   James Lafayette Rasco did not appear to be anywhere in the picture.  Nevertheless, Mary Ann and James Lafayette Rasco had a son named Richmond Austin Rasco, b. May 5, 1871 in Newton County Mississippi.  Richmond grew up and became the Dean of the Law School at the University of Miami in Florida.  He died November 16, 1931.  It is said that James Lafayette Rasco and Mary Ann's children by William Ephraim Rasco did not get along well together and thouse not old enough to get out on their own returned to Alabama and lived with other Rasco relatives.

Mary Ann and James Lafayette Rasco had one other son that they named James.  He was born on April 24, 1874 and died three days later. Mary Ann also died on that date so I guess there was a childbirth complication.  Mary Ann, her infant son James, together with James Lafayette Rasco and his other wives are buried in Contrell Methodist Church Cemetery in Scott County Mississippi just south of Lena and the Leake County line. I have never been able to locate to grave of William Ephraim Rasco.  He was probably buried in the old Rasco cemetery in Dallas Co., Ala. and either his grave was never marked or perhaps the head stone was removed or destroyed. I have been told that about half of the old cemetery was destroyed in the early 1930's when a curve in the road was straightened out and the road went directly through the cemetery.  I don't think there were cemetery protection laws back then.  I think this may also be what happened to the graves of Jesse Harrell Rasco 1st. and his wife Elizabeth (maternal grandprants of Mary Ann Elizabeth [Wilson] Rasco).

Sorry but this is as far as I have gone on James's direct line.  He does have some pictures of laban Taylor Rasco and Sarah "Sallie" (Reese) Rasco that would have had to have been taken before Sallie died in 1859.  Laban and Sallie were the parents of William Ephraim Rasco. He also has pictures of John Hampton Rasco, son of William Ephraim Rasco and Mary Ann Elizabeth (Wilson) Rasco.  I asked him for a copy but have not received them as of this date.  I think when I get back from vacation that I will touch base with him again.  I really need to work out his line down to him.   Should you get this info before I do, please let me know.

Hope all is well with you and hope to see you soon.  I will let you know what I have from Barbara when I have time to go through all of it.  I did get copies of pictures.  Do you have copies?  With just a quick glance through all of the info it seems that we have most all of her info + .

Did you ever have time to go through the package that I sent you?

Talk to you later and do pray for me all of the time.  I need all the help I can get!!!

Blessings,

Kathy

P.S. I am not going to proofread this, so excuse all of the mistakes in typing.  I think the geneations are ok.

Hi, Yes, Sharon and I are related. Her grandfather James W. Rasco is my third cousin which makes Sharon my third cousin twice removed.  Sharon's line of descent is as follows:

1st generation   William Rasco and Rachel Harrell md. 10 Dec. 1777.
2nd generation  Laban Taylor Rasco and Sarah "Sallie" Reese md. 17 Jan. 1804.
3rd generation  Jesse Harrell Rasco and Martha Jane Vanderslice md. 6 Oct. 1836.
4th generation Robert Calvin Ware Rasco and Demaris Catherine Pulley 17 July 1861
5th generation James Thomas Rasco and Liza Jane Vistal Doty  md. 31 Jan. 1886.
6th generation William Thomas Rasco and Velma Buchers Preston   md ca. 1934..
7th generation James W. Rasco and Carol Sue Hellin (not sure of marriage date).
8th generation Rocky J. Rasco and Amy J. Ellwanger  md. 23 April 1980
9th generation Sharon Rasco.
Sharon's 3rd great grandfather, Robert Calvin Ware Rasco, was a brother to my great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Darlisca "Dolly" Rasco (who married her own first cousin, John Hampton Rasco). John and Dolly Rasco moved from Cullman Co., AL, to Comanche Co., TX, in 1892.  Robert Calvin Ware Rasco and his family had moved to Texas several years prior to John and Dolly and at first had settled in Freestone Co., TX, but later moved to Comanche Co.

I have never met Sharon or her family as far as I know.  I knew several of her great-great-uncles, one of whom married my dad's oldest sister.

I have most of the family tree data if Sharon would like to contact me.

Hi Kathy,

I do not know exactly when or where Sarah H. Rasco and Ezekiel B. Wilson were married. Sarah was born about 1801 according to the census records.   She was most likely born in either Christian Co., KY, or Stewart Co., TN.  By 1814 her parents had moved from Stewart Co., TN, to Jackson Co, IL, where they were still living when the 1820 census was taken. Shortly thereafter they show up in Dallas Co., AL. At least two of her brothers were married in Bibb Co., AL, in 1838 and 1842.  The eldest child of Sarah and Ezekiel that I am aware of is Nathaniel Burdine Wilson who was born about 1827 (until recently I was unaware of Washington Wilson, perhaps he was the eldest???). It seem odd that a female in those days would have waited until her mid twenties to have married, most were married before they were twenty. There is a period in the 1830's when almost no marriages were recorded in Dallas County. I don't know why. There are marriages recorded in the 1820's but I have not found one for Sarah and Ezekiel.   Perhaps they met on their way down to Alabama and the marriage was not recorded. Ezekiel was born somewhere in South Carolina. I don't know if he was ever in Tennessee, Kentucky, or Illinois.

Hi Kathy--
I don't have a marriage for Sarah Harrell Rasco and Ezekiel B. Wilson in Dallas Co.   I checked my Alabama marriage CD 1800-1900 and did not find it there either!
The good news!!  Harrells and Rascos are my family in Dallas Co., Alabama.   I am descended from Laban Taylor Rasco and Sarah Reese.
Let me know if I can look for something else!!

Hi John, I have not looked at your site for a long time. I see that you have updated it some. I have worked with the cousins in Texas for about 6 to 7 years on the Wilson, Baxter, and Barnes ancestors. I made dramatic discoveries with the Baxter and Barnes families, but am still at a dead end with the Wilson family, with the brothers in Alabama. Kathy has all the information I have on the Wilsons. My grandmother was Lillie Florence (Wilson) Cook. My mother was Augusta Clytee Cook. I live in Grass Valley, CA. I have traveled to Alabama and Mississippi to visit family and all the cemeteries and archives possible. I've also gone to Salt Lake City, UT, to the Mormon FHC to do a lot of research. Lucky for me all my ancestors, so far, have came to the US from Scotland, England, and Ireland. I didn't have to learn to read another language to decipher old foreign records. My husband, John, studied German so he could read the old records. Thanks for keeping me updated. Hope you have a great holiday season, Sincerely, Brenda Faye (Purvis) Preuss

Subject: Wilson Family tree

Hi John,
I believe we may be related somehow, but I'm not exactly sure of where we tie in.

You have an Att H. Wilson listed somewhere in the geneology as descendant of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson. Was he the son of Ezekiel (2) and Augusta, or was he their grandson?

Att & Mamie Wilson
are my great-grandparents. I am fairly sure this is the same man, because there were not too many people named Att even in those days.

I'm not 100% sure I'm getting this in the right order, but I believe Att & Mamie had at least one more daughter, Eddie Francess, and at least three sons -- Arby Bennett (my grandfather), Burbon, and James (d. 2002).  I believe James & Eddie Francess were quite a bit younger than the other two, and it's possible that the Mark Wilson you have listed as born in 1972 is the son of James & Flora Wilson. Arby married Ruby Lucille Dunn, and most of our branch takes after the Dunn side, but I did see a resemblance in some of the old photos to some of my cousins. If we are related by Att, I can also fill in more of the tree.

I have  a few questions, too:

1) Could we put together a DVD of our family history or an online version of it, and film where the old homesteads would have been, churches, cemeteries....and show where the descendants are now, what they are doing, etc.?

2)My grandpa's brother and one of his sons are named Burbon. I've heard it's a derivitive of an old family name; could that name have been Burdine? And, if so, how would they get Burbon from that?

3) Another thing I have often heard is that we are somehow tied or related to former President Woodrow Wilson; he was from Virginia, and you have traced our Wilson relatives back to South Carolina--pretty close. Have you heard anything about that?

Thank you for any light you can shed on this.
God bless,
Tonya F. Wilson <><

Subject: Ezekiel Burdine Wilson--Militia Lieutenant Colonel!

Just wanted to pass this on to all of you to see what you think. Can this be anyone else but our Ezekiel Burdine Wilson?

When I have time, I go to the library where I've been perusing the Southern Democrat, one of Cahawba's early newspapers. This afternoon I found this notice published there in the October 14, 1837, and October 21, 1837, editions.  I've transcribed it below in the event the picture doesn't copy.

Attention!
First Battalion, 41st Regiment, 7th Brigade, 6th Division, Alaba-
ma Militia; Lieut. Col. E. B. Wilson, Commander:
YOU are hereby ordered to parade at Col. Barnes' on the
          21st October, armed and equipped as the law directs,
and ready for review, at 12 o'clock , M.     Commisioned and
non-comissioned Officers attend the day before for drill.

            By order of                LLOYD BARNES, Col. C. 41.
                                                J. J. GREENING, Adj't.
     October 7, 1837                                                15

Can anyone confirm, from any other source, our E.B. Wilson holding this rank?  Has anyone found another E.B. Wilson in Dallas Co.?

In Jesus,
John

Salem Baptist Church Cemetery

[John M. Gwin Note:  In the box below are the instructions for finding this cemetery submitted by Carolann Arthur. When I went there in July 2006, it took me the better part of two hours to find it using them, however, because I could not find the town of Lynville, and no one to whom I talked knew quite where it was, either, until I was almost there. Further, there are at least three roads called Gholson Road. So I am providing here two more sets of instructions:

1. The county seat of Kemper Co. is DeKalb. From the intersection of Routes 39 and 16 in DeKalb, go east almost three miles to Route 397, which take in a northeasterly direction about 8.6 miles to Lynville. Only one road intersects Route 397 at Lynville. Take that road to the right--in a northnortheastly direction--for 3.4 miles, at which point turn left. This will almost immediately bear right again and open into the well-kept, chainlink-fenced cemetery on your right.

2. This link will take you to a TopoZone USGS map of Kellis Store, Kemper Co., MS, which is where the Salem Baptist Church and cemetery are located.]

Location: Kellis Store Loop or Kellis Store Rd/Gholson Rd, off of Kellis Store Road, about 3.6 miles of Lynville, Kemper Co., MS [Salem Cem. coordinates: N325218.--W0884559.--N32.--W-88.--X Lynville--Source: http://msgen.net/co/kemper/cems/]

Directions: From Highway 397 at Lynville, turn onto Kellis Store Road (located beside Cumberland Store), travel about 3.4 miles
on Kellis Store Road, turn left onto Kellis Store Loop (or) Kellis Store-Ghoulson Rd -- each of these roads meet and loop back into Kellis Store Road. Salem Baptist Church is located on one side of the road & the cemetery is on the other -- about 1/10 - 2/10ths of a mile off of Kellis Store Road. (Submitted 1/23/2000 by Carolann Arthur.)

[John M. Gwin Note:  The following are clearly Kathy Kemp's and Neil Weise's ancestors. Ezekiel Burdine Wilson III's parents are Washington and Mahaley Wilson. Following comprises all the Wilsons listed at this site. The ones listed in black below are also descendants of EB and Estella Augusta.]

Subject: wilson family

Hi, I'm Kelly Wilson from Louisville, MS. We attend memorial every year at Salem Baptist Church, Kemper Co., MS. My husband's family is related to all the Wilsons I see listed, but I can't trace it. His name is Scotty Bruce Wilson, son of Robert Bennett Wilson, son of Arbie Bennett Wilson, son of Att Hampton Wilson (bd. at Salem Baptist Cem.). In the 1900 Census (Kemper Co.) Att Wilson is listed as 13 yrs old living with females willie- age not listed, and Lillie- age 9, in the house of R. E. Wilson, no listing of a mother.  Att married Mamie Smith in Kemper Co. in 1917; they had four children: Arbie--sometimes spelled Abee, Burbon, James, Sammie.  Can you help me put this together?
Thanks,
Kelly

John M. Gwin Note: In Oct 2007 another cousin checked in: Tonya F. Wilson. Her contributions are added in this purplish color. She writes:
...I'm not 100% sure I'm getting this in the right order, but I believe Att & Mamie had at least one more daughter, Eddie Francess, and at least three sons -- Arby Bennett (my grandfather), Burbon, and James (d. If we are related by Att, I can also fill in more of the tree...

...I realized I made a slight error in the posting I sent you earlier; Eddie Francess is actually my grandfather's niece; I had listed her as his sister. I'm going to send you our branch of the tree is sections so I don't clog up your in box :) (we have a big branch).

Arby & Ruby (d) had 7 children:

1)Mary Josephine Wilson (Jo) M1 Mr. Young M3 Charles Roger Woodward (Woody)
2)Robert Bennett Wilson (Bennett) M Rita Mayo (Scott's parents)
3)Billy Ray Wilson (my dad) M1 Doris Ann Dean (my mom) (d) M2 Connie Elaine Frey (step mom)

John, is this Ezekial Burdine Wilson?  - Jay
Sure looks like it to me, Jay. However, remember that there were three of them: Ezekiel Burdine Wilson I (ca. 1800-ca. 1865), the namesake of this page;
Ezekiel Burdine Wilson II (18-18), Ezekiel Burdine Wilson III (18-18).

In the name of the most holy and undivided Trinity.

Article 1:
His Brittanic Majesty acknowledges the said United States, viz., New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, to be free sovereign and independent states, that he treats with them as such, and for himself, his heirs, and successors, relinquishes all claims to the government, propriety, and territorial rights of the same and every part thereof.

Article 2:
And that all disputes which might arise in future on the subject of the boundaries of the said United States may be prevented, it is hereby agreed and declared, that the following are and shall be their boundaries, viz.; from the northwest angle of Nova Scotia, viz., that angle which is formed by a line drawn due north from the source of St. Croix River to the highlands; along the said highlands which divide those rivers that empty themselves into the river St. Lawrence, from those which fall into the Atlantic Ocean, to the northwesternmost head of Connecticut River; thence down along the middle of that river to the forty-fifth degree of north latitude; from thence by a line due west on said latitude until it strikes the river Iroquois or Cataraquy; thence along the middle of said river into Lake Ontario; through the middle of said lake until it strikes the communication by water between that lake and Lake Erie; thence along the middle of said communication into Lake Erie, through the middle of said lake until it arrives at the water communication between that lake and Lake Huron; thence along the middle of said water communication into Lake Huron, thence through the middle of said lake to the water communication between that lake and Lake Superior; thence through Lake Superior northward of the Isles Royal and Phelipeaux to the Long Lake; thence through the middle of said Long Lake and the water communication between it and the Lake of the Woods, to the said Lake of the Woods; thence through the said lake to the most northwesternmost point thereof, and from thence on a due west course to the river Mississippi; thence by a line to be drawn along the middle of the said river Mississippi until it shall intersect the northernmost part of the thirty-first degree of north latitude, South, by a line to be drawn due east from the determination of the line last mentioned in the latitude of thirty-one degrees North of the equator, to the middle of the river Apalachicola or Catahouche; thence along the middle thereof to its junction with the Flint River, thence straight to the head of Saint Mary's River; and thence down along the middle of Saint Mary's River to the Atlantic Ocean; east, by a line to be drawn along the middle of the river Saint Croix, from its mouth in the Bay of Fundy to its source, and from its source directly north to the aforesaid highlands which divide the rivers that fall into the Atlantic Ocean from those which fall into the river Saint Lawrence; comprehending all islands within twenty leagues of any part of the shores of the United States, and lying between lines to be drawn due east from the points where the aforesaid boundaries between Nova Scotia on the one part and East Florida on the other shall, respectively, touch the Bay of Fundy and the Atlantic Ocean, excepting such islands as now are or heretofore have been within the limits of the said province of Nova Scotia.

Article 3:
It is agreed that the people of the United States shall continue to enjoy unmolested the right to take fish of every kind on the Grand Bank and on all the other banks of Newfoundland, also in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and at all other places in the sea, where the inhabitants of both countries used at any time heretofore to fish. And also that the inhabitants of the United States shall have liberty to take fish of every kind on such part of the coast of Newfoundland as British fishermen shall use, (but not to dry or cure the same on that island) and also on the coasts, bays and creeks of all other of his Brittanic Majesty's dominions in America; and that the American fishermen shall have liberty to dry and cure fish in any of the unsettled bays, harbors, and creeks of Nova Scotia, Magdalen Islands, and Labrador, so long as the same shall remain unsettled, but so soon as the same or either of them shall be settled, it shall not be lawful for the said fishermen to dry or cure fish at such settlement without a previous agreement for that purpose with the inhabitants, proprietors, or possessors of the ground.

Article 4:
It is agreed that creditors on either side shall meet with no lawful impediment to the recovery of the full value in sterling money of all bona fide debts heretofore contracted.

Article 5:
It is agreed that Congress shall earnestly recommend it to the legislatures of the respective states to provide for the restitution of all estates, rights, and properties, which have been confiscated belonging to real British subjects; and also of the estates, rights, and properties of persons resident in districts in the possession on his Majesty's arms and who have not borne arms against the said United States. And that persons of any other decription shall have free liberty to go to any part or parts of any of the thirteen United States and therein to remain twelve months unmolested in their endeavors to obtain the restitution of such of their estates, rights, and properties as may have been confiscated; and that Congress shall also earnestly recommend to the several states a reconsideration and revision of all acts or laws regarding the premises, so as to render the said laws or acts perfectly consistent not only with justice and equity but with that spirit of conciliation which on the return of the blessings of peace should universally prevail. And that Congress shall also earnestly recommend to the several states that the estates, rights, and properties, of such last mentioned persons shall be restored to them, they refunding to any persons who may be now in possession the bona fide price (where any has been given) which such persons may have paid on purchasing any of the said lands, rights, or properties since the confiscation.

And it is agreed that all persons who have any interest in confiscated lands, either by debts, marriage settlements, or otherwise, shall meet with no lawful impediment in the prosecution of their just rights.

Article 6:
That there shall be no future confiscations made nor any prosecutions commenced against any person or persons for, or by reason of, the part which he or they may have taken in the present war, and that no person shall on that account suffer any future loss or damage, either in his person, liberty, or property; and that those who may be in confinement on such charges at the time of the ratification of the treaty in America shall be immediately set at liberty, and the prosecutions so commenced be discontinued.

Article 7:
There shall be a firm and perpetual peace between his Brittanic Majesty and the said states, and between the subjects of the one and the citizens of the other, wherefore all hostilities both by sea and land shall from henceforth cease. All prisoners on both sides shall be set at liberty, and his Brittanic Majesty shall with all convenient speed, and without causing any destruction, or carrying away any Negroes or other property of the American inhabitants, withdraw all his armies, garrisons, and fleets from the said United States, and from every post, place, and harbor within the same; leaving in all fortifications, the American artilery that may be therein; and shall also order and cause all archives, records, deeds, and papers belonging to any of the said states, or their citizens, which in the course of the war may have fallen into the hands of his officers, to be forthwith restored and delivered to the proper states and persons to whom they belong.

Article 8:
The navigation of the river Mississippi, from its source to the ocean, shall forever remain free and open to the subjects of Great Britain and the citizens of the United States.

Article 9:
In case it should so happen that any place or territory belonging to Great Britain or to the United States should have been conquered by the arms of either from the other before the arrival of the said Provisional Articles in America, it is agreed that the same shall be restored without difficulty and without requiring any compensation.

Article 10:
The solemn ratifications of the present treaty expedited in good and due form shall be exchanged between the contracting parties in the space of six months or sooner, if possible, to be computed from the day of the signatures of the present treaty. In witness whereof we the undersigned, their ministers plenipotentiary, have in their name and in virtue of our full powers, signed with our hands the present definitive treaty and caused the seals of our arms to be affixed thereto.

WILSON

I saw your [i.e., Kathy Kemp's/Nia Peeples'] posting on the Dallas County, Alabama, Rootsweb mailing list concerning information about Ezekiel B. Wilson. I too would like additional information about him. He was one of my great, great, great, grandfathers. I believe you have a couple of mistakes in your message.

First, I do not think he died in Clarke County, Mississippi, but rather in Clarke County, Alabama. The final settlement of his estate dated July 7, 1870, is recorded in the Probate Minutes, Book "N", page 92 at the Courthouse at Grove Hill, Alabama. I do not have a copy of this settlement but did take some notes. According to what I found, E.B. Wilson died at least 60 days prior to October 16, 1863. The heirs named in the settlement in July 1870 were: Washington Wilson, James M. Wilson, Ezekiel Wilson, and Mary E. Rasco.

There is also indication of a settlement in the estate of N. Burdine Wilson, (Nathaniel Burdine Wilson) eldest son of Ezekiel B. Wilson, recorded in Book "L", page 286 dated February 15, 1866. At that time the record shows that James Wilson was living in the state of Iowa. N. B. Wilson also died in Clarke County, Alabama, per the probate records of that County.

The other error in your posting was that Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco was a granddaughter of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson. She in fact was a daughter of his and my great-great-grandmother. Mary Ann Elizabeth Wilson was born December 12, 1834, and died April 27, 1874. Her first husband (my great, great, grandfather) was William Ephraim Rasco, whom she married in Dallas County, Alabama, on October 10, 1852. William Ephraim Rasco died November 2, 1866, and on April 5, 1869, Mary Ann married Joseph S. Drapers. They moved to Kemper County, Mississippi, where Drapers ran away leaving her and her six Rasco children. Mary Ann may have briefly returned to Alabama but was listed in the 1870 census of Neshoba County, Mississippi, page 375, family number 1286, as Mary Ann Rasco with children: William T. Rasco, Wilson E. Rasco, James M. Rasco, Martha T. Rasco, and a negro servant named Jackson Rasco. Living on the nearby farm of William J. Gentry was another son, my great-grandfather, John H. Rasco. On the farm of James Wilson was another son, Ezekiel B. Rasco. This census was taken on June 24, 1870. On August 31, 1870, Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco married her first husband's nephew, James Lafayette Rasco, and they moved to Scott County, Mississippi, where they had two children: Richmond Austin Rasco born July 5, 1871, and James Rasco born April 24, 1874. Both mother and infant died three days later. Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco is buried in the Contrell Methodist Church Cemetery just south of Lena, Mississippi, in Scott County.

Ezekiel Burdine Rasco (sic--typo--of course should be Wilson) (1800-1863) was married to Sarah H. Rasco a daughter of Jesse Rasco and Elizabeth (possibly Harrison). I have not been able to locate a record of their marriage, but I am sure it was in Dallas County, Alabama, and is one of the unrecorded marriages of that county. That Ezekiel B. Wilson was married to Sarah H. Rasco is proven in the will and estate settlement of her father, Jesse Rasco, who died in Dallas County in 1840. Ezekiel and Sarah with their children were listed in the 1850 census of Dallas County, Alabama. They had moved away by 1860, apparently to Clarke County, Alabama. I believe Ezekiel and his son Nathaniel or Nathan, ran a hotel there. Apparently Sarah, Ezekiel's wife, died before he did, possibly in Dallas County.

Nathan Burdine Wilson married Mary Jane (Fisher) Rasco, the widow of John Alton Rasco, a brother of William Ephraim Rasco. John Alton Rasco died in Dallas County, Alabama, on July 4, 1865, and sometime between then and whenever Nathan B. Wilson died, she married him. She moved back from Clarke County, Alabama, to Dallas County and was living with some of the Wilsons. She then married a man named T. D. Booth, and they moved to White County, Arkansas.

It is true that two of Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco's sons lived and died in Clarke County, Mississippi, at Stonewall, Mississippi. There were also other relatives there as well as in Scott, Leake, and Neshoba Counties. I believe that the son Ezekiel Burdine Wilson, Jr., was also in Mississippi, perhaps in Kemper County. I have not tried to trace these Wilson children or descendants.

As for whom the parents of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson were or exactly where in South Carolina he was born, I do not know. I would like to know, however, so if you find out, please let me know. There was a military officer in the Continental Army from South Carolina named Ezekiel B. Wilson. Our Ezekiel Burdine Wilson may have been his son or a nephew.

That is about all I know at this time. How are you related or connected to Ezekiel Burdine Wilson?
