The Marvel Proposal

The goal is to create an actual fully-illustrated proposal book.  When we’re finished, everyone involved in the project will get a PDF copy of the final product that they can use to show off their work.

As we first get going, I’ll accept anyone’s art that’s interested.  As more artists get involved, we’ll start selecting the best artists for each proposed series.  But even if I don’t use someone’s art in the final product, we’ll still find someplace to display the work properly.

In the proposal, there are 12 titles, with three series running in every title.  That’s a total of 36 (there’ll actually be 37) individual series, featuring 37 solo characters or teams of characters.  So there’s the FF, Spider-Man, the Avengers, Millie the Model, the X-Men, Captain Marvel, Thor, and etc.  I’d like to find artists for each one.  Of course, since we’re actually not going to seriously do the thing, one artist can be selected for three or four series.

For each series, I want the final artist chosen to draw several specific things:

  • The character logo, to go in a box in the corner of the front cover.  For the most part, I want the logos used in the late Silver Age.
  • A similar logo pose but of the character’s secret identity.
  • An “action logo” of the character.
  • The face, or head, of the character.
  • Individual logo-type drawings of all the major supporting cast members (some series have several, some have almost none).
  • A letters column drawing of the character

  • These drawings will be used throughout the proposal book in order to provide a sense of how the proposed comics would be formatted.

In addition, it would be awesome if we could also have:
  • A cover for a story (and not a generic pin-up cover, either)
I would, of course, discuss everything with each artist beforehand, so they’d know exactly what to draw, just as we would talk it over if we were putting a comic together for real.  This will give us an opportunity to work together, and give you a chance to see if you’d like to work with me on comic project for real.

After finding artists who can and would like to both co-plot and pencil their stories—just like the original artists of the Marvel Bullpen—we’ll then seek to put together a whole team, finding artists who can then color the work digitally.

The ultimate goal is to put together a band.
Well, at least a solid group of professional-quality artists* who enjoy working together and would like to create some comics as a group.

* I want artists who can draw at least as well as I can write.  As to the quality of my writing, you’ll discover that by reading my Marvel proposal.  Although hopefully by now you’ll have already noticed that I can spell, punctuate correctly, and even use proper grammar!
