He certainly does exist, however, and I'm fairly sure (from his given name and from his location) that he is a descendant of Squire and Nancy. When first we discovered him in 2007, this seemed the logical place for him to be, since we had/have no other descendants of this William P. Houston until tonight. So we tentatively placed him here until we would discover otherwise. What we discovered instead was him again in 1910, living with his brother William T. Houston. This pretty well nailed it down for me that both these men are sons of William P. Houston.];

YOBPOB John Gwin's Comments
Squire Houston M 55 1805 KY Squire Houston is likely a widower here, as Nancy is clearly not in the picture.
Minerva Houston F 24 1836 IL Minerva's age here places her birth about fourteen years into the marriage of Squire and Nancy, if the 27 Oct 1822 date I have for their marriage is correct (Jim Wall got it from Ancestry.com). That means there are likely five to eight more unaccounted-for Houstons out there at this point.
Uriah Houston M 19 1841 IL
Malinda Houston F 17 1843 IL
Isam Houston M 15 1845 IL If Isam is the youngest, then perhaps Nancy, the mom, died after he was born, say in the late 1840's.

has to be the child of George by HIS first marriage; Mahala must be the
widow of a Houston--she is probably Sarah A. Alkhorn's stepdaughter AND

I have an Isaac Huston, wife Elizabeth, and their children. One of the children was Isaac, born 1802 who married Louisa, last name unknown, children unknown. My file shows Isaac born KY. The patriarch Isaac Huston/Houston was born about 1770. His first daughter, Jane, was born 1794 and married my great-great-great grandfather John Stevenson of Hardin County, KY on Sept 11, 18. Isaac lived in Hardin County KY near John Stevenson, and Isaac is buried in Bacon Creek, KY. Several of the family moved through Indiana, to Cass County, Illinois.
Here is what I have:
Descendants of Isaac Houston
1. Isaac1 Houston was born Abt. 1770, and died in Bacon Creek,
Kentucky,
USA. He married Elizabeth. She died in Hardin County?, Kentucky?, USA.
Children of Isaac Houston and Elizabeth are:
2 i. Jane2 Houston, born 1794; died 26 December 1847 in Brown County,
Illinois, USA. She married (1) John Stevenson 22 September 1811 in
Hardin
Co., Kentucky; born Abt. 1786 in Indiana?; died WFT Est. 1819-1877. She
married (2) William L. Dehart 11 March 1822 in Harrison Co., IN; born
1801;
died 1852 in Brown Co., IL.
Marriage Notes for Jane Houston and William Dehart:
Jane Houston Stevenson marr. DEHART, William * 11-Mar-1822, Harrison

3 ii. William M. Houston, born 1798. He married Sarah
Gwin 28 November 1820 in Harrison County, IN.
4 iii. Rachel Houston, born Abt. 1800. She married Zachariah Downs

23.09--Nancy Gwin, b. 1805; m. [27 Oct 1822 in Orange Co., IN (see below)] Squire Houston; [JMG Note: In Isham's will, he clearly leaves two shares of his estate to two Hustons--Squire and J. E.--who are likely brothers who have married two of Isham's daughters. Since these are the only two daughters on our list of Isham's children unaccounted for in the will, it appears to me that these two sisters, Nancy and Sarah married those two Huston brothers. Which brother married which sister was not clear in the will; however Doris Gyarmati and several others have it that Nancy indeed married Squire--but Doris has that Sarah m. William, whose name does not appear in the will. For now, then, we'll leave it like this until we learn more.]

In Reply to: Jesse Houston Kentucky 1810 by William Charles W. Houston
Posting no. 3304 of 3936William, I am currently trying to sort out the members of the Houston family who left Hardin Co., KY, and moved to Crawford Co., IN and Brown and Adams Cos., IL. I have been focussing on Jesse Houston and Squire Houston primarily because I feel that Aaron Burr Houston and George W. Houston of Putnam Co., MO (in the 1860's and later) were brothers or half-brothers and sons of either Jesse (the younger) or Squire. A newspaper clipping concerning George W. Houston, written in the 1880's, states he was born in Crawford Co., IN and that "While quite young his parents moved to Adams County, IL." I find Jesse Houston in the 1830 census of Crawford Co., IN (age 40-50) who must be the elder Jesse. He was listed as Jessee Husten in the 1820 Hart Co., KY census (formerly part of Hardin Co. I find the family of Squire Houston and his wife Nancy Guin in Brown Co., IL in 1830, 1840, and 1850.
I have searched the Hardin Co., KY tax lists and find that Jesse Huston was taxed for the first time in 1804 and Andrew Huston's first listing is in 1794. Have you been able to find any record that tells us that Andrew was the father of Jesse? Do you know where the family was prior to 1804?

(The following is copied from page 309 of "History of Morgan County, Illinois, 1878" and refers to
the "Sudden Freeze" of Dec. 20, 1836.)
"Daniel Clark says, 'The change occurred in the afternoon about two o'clock. There was snow on the ground, saturated with a slow rain, so that it had commenced running in the low places. I was on the north side of Indian Creek, just entering the timber with a drove of hogs. I was assisted by two men on foot; I was on horseback. One of the men was Uriah Houston, the other, Isaac Drinkwater. At the house of the father of the latter I had stayed the night before. The hogs belonged to Ralph H. Hurlbut, who lived at the time at La Grange Point, and was packing some hogs at La Grange Landing. He had a boat for ferrying, and a lot to keep hogs in on the east side of the river. We reached the river about dark, and penned the hogs; the wind was high, and the slush loaded on the boat so much that we could not cross with my horse. Mr. Drinkwater went home, his father's house being the first one on the east side of the river, distant about seven miles. My home was at Mr. Hurlbut's from which I had been absent for several days. It was a good home, and I was hungry, and about nine o'clock p.m. there came a clear place in the river; I hitched my horse in the shelter of a pecan tree that had been felled with the leaves on, and got into a canoe with two paddles and an ax to reach my home. The ice formed fast on the canoe, and I had frequently to clear it off with the ax, until I got under the lee of the west bank; then it went free, in which free water I froze my left hand seriously. In the morning following I went to feed my horse, and found the river so solidly frozen that I rode him across and had him in the stable before sunrise, and immediately after got some teams and hauled sawdust form Hinman's mill, and made a path to the opposite bank, and drove the hogs across and had them in the lots on the opposite side. There were about three hundred of them; they had been purchased from Peter Taylor, Isaac Houston, George Newman, Wingate Newman, and others. I landed from the open water after 10 o'clock p.m., and my recollection would make the ice the next morning one foot thick."

John:
I am interested in communicating with you about what might be joint family lines.
I saw the obit, which follows, on your webpage. I am curious as to what piqued your interest. Clara Houston was my aunt and Mary Lee (Houston) Potts is my mother. See further below for continuation of this e-mail.

You may be the answer to the brick wall in a family lineage, which several of our family members have attempted to answer for the last few years. This in regards to my maternal grandfather. Your research could be the answer to his origins.
Recent checks in my DNA line and other family trees have pointed toward the Houstons in Brown County, IL. I am searching primarily for Walter Henry Houston and his father William (C.) Houston. I have found references to both names in the Brown County lines. If this proves true out, I believe I know the ancestors to Isaac Houston and his descendants. This I would be willing to share with you. Do you have any information about Walter or William?
My mother is elderly and the last of Walter's 10 children. She would be very appreciative to learn about her father and his ancestors. My grandfather died when my mother was 9 months old. He was very secretive about his family, apparently, because of a major falling out and did not what to be found by his family.
I hope to continue communicating with you and will share any and all of my findings.
Thank you very much,
Dave Potts

information on the Houston family. I am researching William DeHart and
Jane Stevenson. Two websites I've found extremely helpful are: http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html for Illinois marriages and http://208.119.135.17/db/in_marriages_1850/marriages_search.asp for Indiana marriages. |
