William Watkins; [JMG Note: Jim Wall has this Jane in the birth order's second spot, as shown here. Mary Goldman lists her first. While definite dates are offered my each for the births of Allen and Isom, no claim or evidence is offered by either for Jane. Seeing the four-year gap between Allen and Isom, however, tends to make me think that she is more likely to fit between them, so I side with Jim on this one.] 24.03--Isom Denton, b. 1808; m1. Elizabeth Lincoln; m2. Elizabeth Weathers; 24.04--George Denton, b. 1810; m. (Margaret?) Arreta/Aritta Weathers 24.05--William Denton, b. 1815 m. Matilda Jones 24.06--David Denton, b. 1817 m. Joel Downs; 24.09--Elizabeth Denton, b. 15 Nov 1823; [JMG Note: Jim Wall does not list this child, but Mary Goldman does. Two things--the specific (though undocumented) date and the five-year spread between Mary and Rebecca convince me to go with Mary here.] ; [Is the following Elizabeth this d/o David and Elizabeth: Denton, Elizabeth m. Further, we had her listed as the firstborn of Rebecca and Barnett, when all along she's been the lastborn! 35-35 | David | Denton | 72 | 1778 | Farmer | 50 | VA | The subject of this page, this is the same David Denton who bought land in Crowson's Cove (Sevier Co., TN) from Susanna Richardson in 1807 and who married Isham Gwin's daughter Elizabeth and moved here to Indiana. He is the brother-in-law of John Gwin--the John Gwin of Cahaba who is buried in Wilsonville, AL.
Elizabeth | Denton | 63 | 1787 | TN | This is Isham Gwin's daughter Elizabeth, sister of John Gwin who married Jane Walker in the Wear Valley and moved to Alabama. She is my ggg-grandaunt.

This is Thomas Denton, the seventh-born son of David and Elizabeth, for four reasons: living next door, same surname, approximate right age, and a son, Isom, who has the same given name as his grandfather. He is my first cousin four times removed. |

Mary Canterbury
Gwin; sister of Elizabeth Gwin who married David Denton
(res. 35 above, this
census, and subjects of this page); and also sister of John
Gwin who moved to Alabama and is my
ggg-grandpa. Either she has invited her mother, Mary, to move in with
them to spend Mary's
last years (see scenario below) or, more likely,
she--now a widow herself--and her family have moved back to the old
family farm (that Isham bought when they first moved to the area) to
take care of her mother. When Mary dies in five years, Minerva will
inherit the farm.
In 2001, Cousin Doris Gyarmati posted on the Childers Family Forum that Minerva's husband's name is Elijah (see note immediately below). |

found to be not uncommon with apparently vain young women in those
days). |

be

oldest child of David and Amanda Denton, since that's
what the outline said that I received one time from somebody. HOWEVER,
in the 1900 census, this Virgie, still living at home, was listed as
VIRGIL O., MALE, and SON! Someone erred somewhere. If that 1900
enumerator erred, then the only possible explanation I can think of is
this: he (the enumerator) rode his horse from farm to farm each day,
taking his notes in a small notebook, then transferring the date from
his notes to the big ledger when he got home for the night. Mistaking
the cursive Virgie for Virgil, he simply supplied the "male" and "son"
to match his error. But suppose for a minute that the 1900
enumerator was correct; then perhaps another researcher, looking for
Virgil in 1910 and not finding him, went looking for another Virgil
with a similar last name and found this Virgie. |

Josiah Lincoln was the middle son of "Captain" Abraham Lincoln; the oldestThis is interesting to me! My second great-grandfather, Isom Denton's first wife was Elizabeth Lincoln, daughter of Josiah Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln's uncle) and Catherine Barlow. Isom was the son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin. Also, Sarah Weathers married Thomas Lincoln, son of Josiah and Catherine. She was the daughter of my third great-grandparents, Benjamin Weathers and Glathy Bullington. When Benjamin died in 1881, nine Lincoln grandchildren shared in his estate (his daughter Sarah Weathers Lincoln Sipes had died by then).
son was Mordecai and the youngest was Thomas, father of President Abraham
Lincoln. So Josiah was an uncle of the president. It is sometimes confusing
because President Abraham has the same name as his grandfather. Josiah
Lincoln and Catherine Barlow named their first daughter Barbara, presumably
for her grandmother Anna Barbara Moyer. I think all these women spoke German
because my grandmother who was born in 1876 told me that her grandmother,
who was the daughter of Barbara Lincoln, spoke some German. My grandmother
used certain expressions in German.
SheliaI have sort of lost the thread. Is there a relationship between the above-mentioned Anna Barbara Moyer and my ancestor Anna Barbara Weaver/Weberwhose husband was Johan Georg Klaar/George Clore?

Subject: Fwd: Agan, etc. -- from cousin descended from David Denton & Elizabeth GwinJohn, here is another GWIN cousin of ours, Evelyn Harper Jackson, who descends from my third great-grandparents, David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin. As you can see, she is very much into doing family and historical research.
Would you like to invite her to visit your GUINN/GWIN web site? I think that would be nice.
Evelyn lives rather close to the John Hay Historical Center in Salem, Washington County, Indiana which is near Orange County. Perhaps she could assist you, if you have questions about GWINs and GWIN descendants living in the area.
I tried to call you last Saturday, but you were busy. I will try to call you again this Saturday. I have found some information about the GWINs in Dubois County. I think they descend from George Holmes Gwin.
Best wishes,
Jim

Subject: Agan, etc.Jim and Betty;
Thanks for your replies to my question even though it still is undetermned the birth/death dates of Susannah and Eleazor Lockhart's children. I am going to John Hay center tomorrow to research the Orange County records and perhaps I will find out more. All I have is from the Agan Book, and it doesn't answer my questions. The problem with the Agan book is there are no references listed for proof. The DAR will not recognize information from it for that very reason. I am working on the lineage of Ardella McCutheon Dodge through the Lockharts .
Her lineage stems from
William Lockhart (ca. 1765)/Hannah Maxwell; to
Eleazor Lockhart/Susannah Agan; to
James Alexander Lockhart/Emily Jane Burton; to
William Francis Lockhart/Caroline Eliza Stroud; then through her
grandmother; (Etta Denton McCutcheon)
mother and
herself. (Ardella McCutheon Dodge)
Ardella"s grandmother, Etta Denton McCutcheon was a sister ot my grandmother, Bessie Denton. I am ready to submit Ardella's membership in the Daughters of 1812 and a supplemental for myself through David Jones' s service. His daughter was Matilda Jones Denton who is buried in the Old Unity Baptist Cemetery, but I have to go over and take a picture of Matilda's stone to verify her death date in 1861.
Betty, I do not have a copy of the info you sent to me about your accident at school. I remember you sending it to me, but I have the best system of filing things until it comes to finding them!! Probably it is because I am involved in so much:
1. Hugh and I are co-chairs of the Proctor House Restoration Project. This is a pre-Civil War House that the Crawford County Historical Society owns. We are interviewing architects to do a feasibility study; working on grants for the restoration; working on getting the property on the National Historical Places; restoring the pioneer cemetery on the 7 acres that our Society owns; working on preparation for the 2nd annual celebration of Crawford County's Founders Day plus being the treasurer of the Restoration Project. Hugh and I are chairing/planning activities such as a 4-day yard sale and Music Fest for fund raisings and even a dedication of a marker for Professor Johnson's Marengo Academy in April. Plus I answer and research queries mailed to the Crawford County courthouse and then referred to our Society.
2. We are so active in the SAR and involved in the grave location project of soldiers/patriots in Harrison and Crawford County. In so doing we have two grave markings to put in place for the upcoming summer. I am happy to have completed the application papers for two new members for the John Hay SAR Chapter at Salem. One was Glenn Crecelius through the Pirtles and the other one was Ernie Routh who I was able to open up a line for him that had never been submitted before. Quite a feat!
3. I have recently resigned the office of Historian in The Hoosier Elm Chapter DAR that I have held for ten years. I am glad that a younger person was willing and able to take this project. This job incures--not only keeping a factual account of our chapter's work--but restoration of pioneer cemeteries in Harrison County and I felt it was time for someone else younger to take this on. While I was historian, using my research we were able to erect markers for three Revolutionary War Soldiers here in Blue River Township that were long due to be memorilized. (Thomas Reneau, William Henson and John Cromer)
4.. I am Indiana State Chaplain for the Daughters of 1812 as well as treasurer of our Jonathan Jennings Chapter locally. This involves travelling to State Conferences and lots of paper work. In the capacity of state chaplain, we also have a grave location project of soldiers of War of 1812. I have just made the yearly report of 59 soldiers' graves found in Harrison and Crawford County. This is really hard as you have to research not only the soldiers' service but naming of children and who they married.
5. Am active member of the Daughters of the Union but refuse to take on anymore offices.
6. Some additional things achieved the last two years were the sucessful fund raising for flag poles to be placed at the Hancock Chapel cemetery as well as Mt. Tabor. And the research and dedication of a marker placed at Union Chapel Cemetery marking the graves of William Poe; Eliza Crecelius (who I descend from) and William's second wife, Susan Harrison more than 100 years after their deaths.
This is why I am busy all the time. I have heard so many retirees mentioning about being bored---whee!!!Jim, you have had my address and phone number in the past. So I must not be the only one who misplaces things (grin). We have talked, as we have mutual relatives through the Gwinns. David Denton who married Elizabeth Gwinn were my 3rd great-grandparents through my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth "Bessie" Denton Poe.

As published in the souvenir Cenntenial Program for the 1959 Harrison County Fair.Blue River Township is located in the northwest corner of Harrison County; as its name implies, Big Blue River flows along and forms the west boundary of this township.
According to the records in the courthouse in Corydon, the first settlers of this township took land in the extreme northwest part of the township along the river. These were:
a. Arthur Whitehead in 1817;Most of this information is contained in a History of the Lincoln Family by Waldo Lincoln. Isom Gwin married one of the Lincolns. However, his name is shown as Givin in the book.
b. Levi Taylor and John Coe in 1818; and 0
c. Benjamin King in 1819.d. Josiah Lincoln, an uncle of President Abraham Lincoln, settled in southwest Blue River Township. Josiah Lincoln had six children; two sons
1. Jacob Lincoln and
2. Thomas Lincoln [Jim Wall Note: he married Sarah Weathers, daughter of my third great-grandparents, Benjamin Weathers and Glathy Bullington Weathers. Benjamin Weathers' second wife was Jane Gwin Tipton, daughter of Isom Gwin and Mary Canterberry.] and four daughters:
3. daughter Lincoln m. John Crutchfield,
4. daughter Lincoln m. Isom Denton[Jim Wall Note: son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin Denton] ,
5. daughter Lincoln m. John Briscoe, and
6. daughter Lincoln m. John Sullenzer [Sullenger?].

by Mary Morris GoldmanMary,
I have Aretta Weathers' parents as Joseph and Rachel (Potter) Weathers. I've made a few trips to Orange County searching the records and there is no will or estate for Joseph Weathers that gives his children's names. His land was adjoining the land of David Denton, however, as described in the land records, so it seems plausable that their children could have married each other. I've also checked the other Weathers siblings of that generation and none of them had a daughter named Aretta. The fact that George and Aretta Denton named their first four children Rachel, Joseph, David, and Elizabeth was interesting as it seems Rachel and Joseph were Aretta's parents' names and David and Elizabeth were George's parents' names.I descend from George and Aretta's son Joseph Denton, through his son Harmon, no doubt named after his uncle, your Harmon. When my Harmon was a teenager he left home and moved to northwest Indiana. Because of his southern accent and the fact that there was no official birth record and he didn't have much schooling, people thought he was saying "Herman" when he gave his name. From then on in marriage records, land records, death records, tombstone, etc. it was always spelled "Herman", even though he always said it was Harmon and he was called "Harm" growing up.
I'd love to talk to you more on the family as I'm trying to track down all of the rest of George and Aretta's children. E-mail me at jordan65@peoplepc.com if you get a chance. Thanks.
John, Mary Angeline Denton Patterson is my maternal great-grandmother. Lura, or Jean as she preferred, was my grandmother. Laura Rees

In most censuses, John says he was born in either IN, with father born in TN (Abt. 1817) and Mother born in VA (Abt. 1823), or that he was born in NC, parents born in NY or TN. And now his death certificate says his father, David DENTON is born in NY and his mother, S. BOLT was born in IN!!! Let's add some more confusion to an already elusive ancestor! UGH! BIOGRAPHY:
From Biographical Sketches; History of Howard and Tipton Counties, 1883 Page 400:John M. Denton, son of David and Emeline Denton, was born in NC 21 Mar 1847. He is of English-German descent and is a nephew of the celebrated geologist, William Denton of Philadelphia. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to Washington Co., IN, settled on a farm of 80 acres, and there died. At the age of 10, he removed to Orange Co., and there he attended what school he could during the winter and worked at farming during the summer. In 1862, he came to Howard Co. and worked for Oliver Moulder until his enlistment, in 1864, in the IN Vol. Inf., serving under Gen. Thomas. For 12 months he served faithfully and was mustered out at Louisville, KY. Since his return, he has been chiefly engaged in the saw and planing mill business. In 1870 he married Miss Martha Stratton, who died in 1879, the mother of two boys and two girls. Mr. Denton is a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a member of the G.A.R., and of the Friends' Society.Frankfort Crescent News Monday, February 21, 1916, page 8
OBITUARY
Funeral of John DentonFuneral services for the late John M. Denton, who died Friday night at 11 o'clock at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette, were held in this city this afternoon. Rev. E. T. Howe, pastor of the M.T. Church, officiated at services held at the Christian church at 2 o'clock. Members of the Masons, Red Men, and G.A.R. post attended the services. Burial was at Bunnell cemetery.
The body was brought to Frankfort Saturday evening and was taken to Comley undertaking parlors, where it remained until the hour of funeral today.Apoplexy was the immediate cause of Mr. Denton's demise, although he has been failing in health for several months. His illness dated from the time of the Arbor Day celebration held in Frankfort two years ago. With a number of others, Mr. Denton was seated upon the speakers stand, at the southeast corner of the square, when the structure collapsed. He received an injury to his right leg which afterward developed gangrene. Finally the limb was amputated below the knee. Since then his condition gradually weakened. He entered the Soldiers' Home last May and visited the city once since then.
Mr. Denton was a resident of Frankfort for many years, during a large part of which he was a member of the police force and was also a rural mail carrier. He was a policeman for 14 years, serving two years under Marshal Jones and under George W. Bird. He proved an efficient officer and made a host of friends in the city. While engaged as a rural mail carrier, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He left the service but returned later. Finally his failing health compelled him to retire from active work. Although of southern birth, Mr. Denton served in the Union Army during the civil war. He first served as a member of the 57th Indiana Volunteers and, after being mustered out, re-enlisted in Company I, 157th Indiana Volunteers with which he served during the remainder of the war.
He was past 66 years old, having been born March 25, 1847, a son of David and Sarah Denton. He was a native of North Carolina. He came to Indiana with his parents and was married to Miss Nettie Stratton. His wife died 40 years ago. Four children were born to the couple, of whom three survive. His second marriage was to Mary M. Spray. She died December 25, 1910. Two children were born of this marriage, both surviving. The five children are: Mrs. August Holcomb of Lafayette; Miss Prudence Denton of Muncie; Samuel Denton of Arkansas; Claude Denton of Marion; and Earl Denton of Frankfort.
The deceased belonged to the Friends Church. He held membership in the Masonic order, the Red Men, and G.A.R.

Meet the Family of David and Elizabeth Gwin Denton!
Mary Morris Goldman's Source Jim Wall's and others' Sources I, John Gwin, met Mary Goldman, my 5th cousin, in Nov 2005. She sent me her gedcom on the David Denton family, and I have listed it in this left-hand column below. While hers has quite a bit more info than Jim's, his does have info that she does not; therefore, I have elected to list both side by side for comparison purposes. I have also taken the liberty of putting her data into my outline format rather than the standard gedcom. I, John Gwin, met Jim Wall, also my 5th cousin, in 2004, and he has sent me quite a bit of info regarding the descendants of Isham Gwin, our gggg-grandfather. I'm listing things I've gotten from him in this right-hand column below. You can see immediately that Jim's and Mary's sources conflict with each other in one way or another from place to place. They are basically in agreement, of course; however, I hope that using this side-by-side format will allow readers to see more easily the conflicts. Jim has also sent much more information that is listed on our Gwins in Indiana page. 3.2--David Denton, b. 1778 in Hampshire Co., (now WV) VA--age 72 in 1850 census of Orange Co., IN; d. 1860 in Orange Co., IN; m.
