PLEASE NOTE: Clearly much work went into the original researching of this data, and for that I am very grateful! My former sister-in-law, Vonda Kay Sigmon [Mitchell] Gwin, told me that her brother, Robert Sigmon (RESigmon@fuse.net), did some of the original research, and it was she who gave my mother, Dorothy Lee Keeney Gwin, a copy of his book. When mother died in 2005, I inherited this copy. The book's first page does indeed list as co-authors "Kenneth Cavender, who 'dug up' most of the enclosed names and dates" and "Robert Sigmon, who dug up some names and performed all manual chores," and also states, "Made for Vonda Mitchell, January 1977, so she would know her roots--Love, Bob Sigmon".
When I decided to transcribe Bob's material to this page, however, I saw that the format of the original only used varying degrees of indentation to distinguish generations; no numbers or other characters were used. To facilitate reading, then, I have here attempted to continue using those indentations but adding numbers as well, the pre-decimal number indicating the generation, the post-decimal number indicating the birth order within the family.
In at least one place, I was not able to read the indentations correctly, those indentations seeming to vary from one page to another, making it nearly impossible to interpret to which generation a given entry might belong. I attempted but failed to contact Vonda's brother to correct my error(s). For years, then, I caused those parts in question to as a caution to the reader. However, on 5 Mar 2009 I received an email from Cousin Jackie Sue Young who shared the lot of data listed below in this green; it helped to clarify those indentation problems in the area of that flashing information, especially since it highlighted for me and seemed to confirm a comment received earlier from Cousin Olive Basham that there were NINETEEN children of Harvey Hudson Hamilton Young and Olive Mae Buckley.
Other contributors include Cousins Mae Van Dinter, Norma Smith Frank, Vicki Hess, Beckie (last name unk.), Mary (last name unk.), Beverly Goding, Eileen Dahmen, and John Robert Corey, as listed below.
Cousin Tom Young contacted me in Jun 2007 and has contributed more material, also listed below. His own excellent page is online at: http://www.tomyoung.us/html/ancestors.html.
Cousin Barbara Emerson Sharp checked in in June 2009, joining Jackie Sue Young as a descendant of 22.00--Conrad Young. Her contributions are found in the gold box below as expanded by my additions of pertinent census data. Click here for an interesting relationship chart for Barbara and Jackie Sue Young!
In addition, I own and have read and highly recommend to all a very readable, most enjoyable, and very well documented 94-page book, John Young: Lieutenant at Elk by Orton Jones, Mountain State Press, Charleston, WV, 1994 (ISBN: 0-941092-31-3).
Some of the entries in red below are to indicate the above-named contributors.
In early 2009, I decided to add twenty to the numbers of the generations. For example, my own generation, number 8, became 28. I hope that in so doing I have allowed for the future expansion of the genealogy and not confused the readers.

Subject: The Jung Family of Elk River WVConrad Jung was born in Pennsylvania to newly arrived Mathias Jung and his wife Anna Margaretta Fey 1732. Mathias was one of the founding fathers of Lancaster PA, and he died young at the age of 38 in the year 1749. Conrad was the oldest of several children and he was married to Anna Margaretta Franciscus in the year 1755. They had one son named John, later to be known as Capt John Young of Elk River near Charleston WV. Conrad's wife Anna Margaretta was struck and killed by lightning when John was 4. Conrad left Pennsylvania for the Shenandoah Valley with his son. Conrad married again and that wife was drowned in either the flooded Shenandoah or Potomac River. They had 4 children in addition to John. The family then went to Nicholas Co., VA, and Conrad married again to Elizabeth Wood. They had 2 sons William, b. 1785 and my own ancestor, George E. Young, b. 1788. William married May Lilly and George married Eudoshia Huddleston of Quaker background. Two books of these families are John Young, Lieutenant at Elk and every Roane (Rhone Germany yes?) Co. book you can find. The towns to visit are Clendenin, WV, and Elkview, WV, and each have very good family history centers. The websites cannot keep up with all the histories you'll find by searching elsewhere. William Young's death is documented in WV that he died on Elk Two Mile, and his parents were Conrad and Elizabeth Young. He was the last of their children to die and died in Kanawha Co., WV. His brother, George, died about 1857. This was Indian Country and some were Indian fighters, especially, Conrad and his two oldest sons, John and Charles. A fascinating history. Many old gravesites are along the Elk River through Kanawha and Roane Counties. The Moravian church at Lancaster, PA, has some history on Conrad and his family from Germany in the early 1700's.

It
is very clear that all these records are talking of the same family. As
we compare Bob's and Jackie's accounts side by side, each gives
clarification of the ambiguities of the other. For example, Bob Sigmond does not reveal the last names of the children, leaving it to the reader to figure out from the parents' last names, etc. I had thus assumed that
Ralph Dale's last name was Lanham, him being the second child of Sandra
Kay and
Franklin Lanham. But seeing Jackie Sue Young's list of the children of
Cora and Simon Jones beside Bob's list suddenly made me realize that
Ralph,
Janey, Margaret, Richard, Mary, and Eloise were Joneses, not Lanhams,
and belonged in generation 28, not 30!
Ralph and Ralph must be the same person, and Bob's list tells us his middle name, Dale. Janet Mae and Janette must be the same person. Richard Amon and Richard must be the same person. Eloise Sue and Sue must be the same person. And Mary Elizabeth and Mary must be the same. That leaves us with Bob's Margaret Ann and Jackie's Samona and Francis unaccounted for. Perhaps looking for this family in the census records will throw additional light onto the mystery. From Bob's and Jackie's reports, we had no idea as to the correct birth order of generation 27 with the exceptions of Cora and Zada who are first and last, respectively. So we looked up the Harvey H. Young family in the census records for 1920 and 1930 and got a fairly decent picture of the birth order through son Hoy, the eleventh born. But for the 12-born through the 18th-born children, there is no clue so far; therefore, I have arbitrarily assigned each of the remaining seven children to one of those as shown below. |

[JMGwin NOTE: In March 2009, Cousin Jackie Sue Young emailed me with even more data that has helped unravel--at least in my mind--all of this heretofore semi-confusing information on the now-understood-to-be NINETEEN children of Harvey and Olive Mae Young. Using Jackie's data, I have reorganized Bob Sigmon's report on this family and arranged it as I now believe he intended it to be understood. With the exceptions of Jackie's notes that Cora Young Jones was the oldest and Zada Young Fernatt was the youngest of the 19, the birth order was still unclear, however, until I found this family in both the 1920 and 1930 censuses, which gave us the birth order through the eleventh-born child. I arbitrarily selected the birth order numbers for the 12th through 18th children only for the temporary purpose of facility in reference. I have attempted to put Jackie's somewhat extensive (and most welcome!) information into my outline format in the chart above. Her good email follows.]

Sherry,
I have some information on Charles "Conrad" Young's father William Young. I went to a genealogical fair last fall. They had a book on Conrad Young. I also have birth, marriage, and death dates for him.
Birth: 17 May 1785
Marriage: 24 June 1806
Death: 15 Aug. 1857, Elk Two Mile, Kanawha Co. Va
For his wife, Mary Lilley, I do have a birth date: 1 May 1782 in Frederick Co, VA
Book on Conrad Young. ( May 10, 2002 WV Genealogical Fair). Mentions William as John Young's brother and as a Captain. William recruited John to be a spy. John and his mother were captured by the Indians but later returned unharmed.

[John M. Gwin NOTE: Cousin Dan has GWS married twice as follows: m1. 26 Dec 1865 to Margaret J. Estep; m2. after 1865 to Fanny Young. From his obituary and oral history of their grandchildren, I know that GWS and Fannie Young were married 58 years, so if he were married twice, then he and MJE would've not been married very long. I had never heard of the first wife until May 2002, but just after I read Dan's note, I asked my mother, the late Dot Gwin (27.03 below), if Grandpa Stanley had been married before he married Grandma Stanley, and she said yes, she'd heard that her life, but she couldn't remember the first wife's name; according to his obituary that Terry sent me, GW and Fanny had 17 grandkids when he died in 1927; Mamie and Mack had 7, and since Maude and George had none, Harry and Mabel must've had ten between them; indeed, Mother (Dot Gwin) told me Mabel had six children and Harry had four.]

He passed away on April 24, 2004. I am his daughter. All of my brothers and sisters are alive. They are (listed above), in order of oldest to youngest. Don't know if there is any other information you need regarding our branch of the family, but this will make your existing records correct. If you need anything else, like middle names, or marriages, let me know. I found your information very interesting. Take care, Merry Jo

[John M. Gwin Note: I just noticed something interesting about Mae's contribution. If the info we have on the births of her 4.0--Daniel Young and our 4.3 Mary "Mollie" Young are correct, then they have to have been twins! Hello, what a nice job you have
done and many hours of labor
to
produce.
I am a distant family member. [Here's more on my line:]
Cousins:
Last weekend I was in Lancaster, PA, at the Tell Cedars of Lebanon
Midwinter
Conference at the Host Inn; I arrived Friday afternoon and went to the
visitor center and began inquiring about our geneology, then I went to
the Moravian Town of Littitz which is 10 miles or so North of
Lancaster.
This is the town where Sutter came back home to after they trashed his mill and land in the California Gold Rush. Joe Wood's Gold Wagon circa 1898 was on display there when cousin Stanley Farenkamm took me there to see it in1989 or so. His wife Mary (Young) was a descendent of Mathias Jung in Lancaster. Michael Jung was the only one with that name buried in the cemetery behind the Church in Littitz.
Mathias and his younger brother Marcus came over from Rotterdam on the "Loyal Judith" to Philadelphia and then to Lancaster where Mathias was a burgess (mayor of the boro) and cordwainer (cut cordwood for his store) and Marcus was a blacksmith. They changed their names in 1747 to Matthew Young and Marks or Markes Young when they gave allegiance to King George.
In the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine on Page 122 for 1965 at mid page below Item (13) Orphans Court in the next paragraph it reads "John Hobson who intermarryed with the widow of Mathias Young (footnote 15, deceased is appointed guardian over Henry Herclerodt, Orphan child of Henry Herclodt deceased, in room of the said Mathias Young."
Footnote 15 reads: "The will of Matthew Young of Lancaster Borough, dated 12 July and proved 27 July 1749, mentions his wife but not by name, children Conrad, Jacob, Catharine, Mary and Christina and nominated his brother Marks Young executor. Will Book A-1,177:1749."
The will on microfilm in the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, just down Rt. 30 from the Host Inn at 2215 Millstream Road where Carolyn Wenger is Director, Lancaster, PA 17602-1429, is written in English script and also mentions John Graves as an executor and gives all the children 50 pounds Pa Currency when they are 21 and Conrad as the primary heir, being the oldest son; the house/store was located next to property owned by E. Stoudt, and there is a brewery by that name in Adamsburg today. Copies of the Will are available from the Court House where the microfilm was made.
I hope this is helpful to all my cousins and please pass it
on.

Hi,
1.) Was wondering if you know anything about Mary Elizabeth Young? I have a picture of her and on it is written -- Mary Elizabeth Young, part Chickahominy Indian. Does this ring a bell? Who was her mother? Is there a possibility she could be Indian?WHEN THE SOLDIERS CAME AND TOOK ALL THE CATTLE, HOGS, HORSES AND PRODUCE OF CONRAD YOUNG AND HIS WIFE MARGARET JAMES, SISTERS MARY ELIZABETH AND FANNY RODE OFF ON THEIR SIDE SADDLES AND WERE TAKEN IN BY THEIR COUSINS THE RUFFNERS. CONRAD AND HIS WIFE MARGARET WERE TAKEN OFF TO CAMP CHASE?2.) Does anyone know what George Stanley's real last name is? His parents were massacred by Indians when he was 7 years old, while he was watching.AFTER THE CIVIL WAR THEIR LAND, WHERE MOM IS NOW IN MEADOWBROOK MANOR, WAS BOUGHT UP BY CARPETBAGGERS (THE CABELLS?)
MARY ELIZABETH'S MOTHER WAS MARGARET JAMES WHOSE FATHER WAS JESSE JAMES. HER MOTHER WAS A MORRIS AND HER FATHER FOUGHT IN THE VIRGINIA MILITIA DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
MARY WAS THE THIRD WIFE OF JOE WOOD, WHOSE GOLD WAGON IS AT SUTTER'S MILL NATIONAL PARK, ACCORDING TO YOUR DAD WHEN HE TOOK ME THERE.
OUR GRANDMOTHER MABEL STANLEY GRAFTON, WHO LIVED TO BE ALMOST 104, SAID WE WERE PART CHEROKEE AND POCAHONTAS' TRIBE--WHICH I THOUGHT TO BE DELAWARE, BUT COULD BE CHICKAHOMINY(?).
EVIDENTLY THIS MAY BE ONE OF MARY'S SIBLINGS, AS GEORGE WASHINGTON STANLEY WAS THE HUSBAND OF OUR GREAT-GRANDMOTHER FANNY YOUNG STANLEY, MARY ELIZABETH'S SISTER.Love,GEORGE WASHINGTON STANLEY'S FATHER WAS ISAAC STANLEY FROM GEORGE'S CREEK, THE NEXT HOLLOW EAST OF CAMPBELL'S CREEK WHERE THE STANLEY HOME WAS AT THE MOUTH OF WASH HOLLOW.
PERHAPS ISAAC'S DAD WAS GEORGE STANLEY? OUR OLDEST COUSIN GEORGE STANLEY WILL BE 96 IN OCTOBER. IT WAS HIS 29 TH ANNUAL FAMILY REUNION I ATTENDED ON JULY 4TH AT PUTNAM COUNTY PARK WITH HIS GRANDDAUGHTERS THERE FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AND CARSON CITY, NEVADA. GEORGE'S PHONE NUMBER IN CHESAPEAKE, A DEMOCRATIC TOWN WHERE HE WAS THE REPUBLICAN MAYOR TWICE, IS 304--949-4132. ASK HIM? PERHAPS COUSIN JOHN GWIN HAS THIS INFORMATION?
LOVE, john corey

Subject: Stanley/Young UpdateCousin John,
I was in Charleston last Saturday 2006 with Cousin George Stanley, 96; he showed me the Stanley family as researched by a Belcher nephew. It said our forefathers were called Stonely back in England around 1611 or so. I also saw that the "Loyal Judith" came from Rotterdam to Philadelphia with our ancestor Mathias Jung (Matthew Young after 1747) in 1732 and not 10 years later as I believed. It also said that Captain John Young, the scout for Washington, Indian Fighter, and incorporator of Charleston buried on the hill above Young's Bottom near Clendennin, was the father of Charles Conrad Young, our great-grandfather who is buried in the Hendrick Cemetery in the curve before Hawk's Nest State Park. Charles Conrad was Fanny Young Stanley's and Mary Young Wood's father and owned the land where Mom is at the Meadowbrook Nursing Center. George will have David or Doris Aliff mail me the pages about the Stanley/ Young family.

When my grandparents and Aunt Mary visited West Virginia, someone took them out and showed them a great big rock. They said it was the grave of Margaret James. My mom took a picture -- but I don't know where it is. Love, Beverly

Cousin Beverly,
Grandma Grafton (Mabel Stanley Grafton) said we were related to Jesse James and Harry Truman. Jesse James was the 1784 version or father of Margaret James Young in the DAR & SAR Geneology that is registered. Grandmother said Solomon Young, Harry Truman's Father-in-law had his family bible burned and the connection could NOT be proven, so I am glad you have cleared this up.
However, Harry Truman was Grandmaster of Masons in Missouri, and both of the Adams, Sam and John Quincy, were part of the Anti-Masonic movement? Which Adams was it that was mentioned in the Ruffner lineage as the governor was allegedly a cousin who took in Fanny and Mary Young after Conrad and Margaret were taken off to Camp Chase???? and then lost their land to carpetbaggers when they returned after the Civil War. John

One account of the Booker T. Washington family and the Ruffner reunion said we were related to Adams I believe. We are definitely related to Harry S. Truman. He was a cousin of my grandmother, Mabel. I also retracked back from his family history to make sure it was the same people, and it was. We had a very busy, pioneer family. Bev

Tom,
When I was an elected PA State Constable I went in the CourtHouse in Lancaster and copied the will that was proved (probated) in July1749 when Matthew Young's widow intermarried with a Hobson; I believe hehad 2 sons and 3 daughters. His next door neighbor was a Staub family
and there is a brewery there today with that name!
My paternal ancester with the same name as me, John Corey, builtthe first log cabin in the village of New London, south of Norwalk, Mylanand Sandusky and west of Akron. Perhaps we could meet near there. Thatwould be southeast of Toledo I believe! I look forward to meeting youbefore too long! John Corey is buried next to a Grange Hall in Lake Twp.East of Coldwater Michigan! John

John, By the way, I never answered your question about where we are. Unfortunately Toledo is on the Western side of the state, actually on the western end of Lake Erie. Here's an idea. . . My father's immediate family used to hold reunions every year or two in West Virginia. It seems that the family stopped doing that after the last one about three years ago. Most of my father's generation has passed away, and the cousins are truly everywhere. The idea of rounding up as many ancestors of Mathias Young as possible for a weekend somewhere has some appeal to me, although I think it would be a daunting task. (Lancaster comes to mind) The trouble is communication and also the fact that so many are older, or perhaps too young to care. But what a great time that would be if we could pull it off! I know the descendants of Thomas Jefferson do this to this day.
Also, I recently posted a picture of the first page of Mathias' will on my blog. Pretty interesting stuff. I have a photocopy of the whole document as well as some of the other documents from the Lancaster museum. I have no objection to anyone "lifting" it off the site. If you or anyone else is interested, I'll post the whole thing.

Tom, I once again saved the Geneology you sent until I can get the program to open it; cousin John Gwin has the geneology site for our family and I have cced this to him. I wonder if he opened what you sent him? Gleevec normally costs $2000/month, but Novartis gives me samples to keep my leukemia in check and my glucose number is around 160 as I monitor it daily. I have no problem getting around, but get tired and need rest more than I used to. Cousin John is thin and seems to have survived his horrible car accident many years ago well, at least that was my impression when we met at the New Mexico Border several years ago. I will gladly come visit you in Ohio if you give me directions as Pittsburgh is not that far away I believe. John Corey By the way Marcus was Mathias Jung's brother and he was a blacksmith while Matthew was a burgeous and cord wainer!

Hoping you can help me on one of my Young family members. I am looking for the parents of Elizabeth Young who was married to William Augustus Allen. She was born circa 1820 and died 15Jan1890 in Clendenin, Kanawha Co WV. Buried at Hayes Cemetery at Falling Rock, Kanawha Co WV. I believe they were married at the home of George Young. I know a Charles Young represented her for many years when she was trying to get William’s pension from the Civil War. Children included: Jeanetta (m. Keenan Coleman),
John Henry (m. Savannah Rucker), William A. (m. Cassandra England), Uriah (m. Sarah Icenhower, Savannah Rucker Allen after John’s death), Rutha (my ancestor-m. Isaiah Smith), Maria, Rosina (m. Andrew Floyd England) I can’t determine who Elizabeth’s parents were. I though George and Eudosia Huddleston Young, but maybe not. Do you have any info on her? Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. Allen and wife Elizabeth Hi John, I saw your questions sent to Judi Brinegar posted on her website back in January. I don't know if anyone has answered your question so I just wanted to share with you what I have. Elizabeth was not a Young; she was a Hayes. Her parents were John Hayes and Elizabeth "Betsy" Naylor. After John's death in 1836, Betsy married George Young. That is why Elizabeth and William were married at the home of George Young. This was her mother and stepfather's home. After George died, Elizabeth's mother went on to marry a third time to Samuel Estep. I hope this helps! Best of Luck, Melinda Patton Garbacz |

Comments: | Great website. Very detailed. I received and email from a cousin yesterday talking about John Young "Revolutionary War" married to Keziah Tackett. I have been intrigued by this information and have been web searching since. I would like to find info on the family between John and William Bruce Young of Clendenin. W.B. Young was my great grandfather. We are having a family re-union in June and would love to be able to share some info about our history. |
