STANDARDS
PRIORITY STANDARDS:

1. Analyze and evaluate the impact of European colonialism on the natives of North America from varied perspectives, to include:

a) indigenous American cultures;

b) clash of cultures;

c) Spanish and British colonies in the New World;

2. The struggle for colonial independence from Great Britain, the Declaration of Independence, the foundation of the United States of America and the ratification of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVE (SWBAT):
Students will understand how a new nation came to exist on the North American continent.
 

BIG IDEAS:
Government and Society:  European settlers established colonies in land inhabited by Native Americans and then developed new forms of self-government.

Competition Among Countries:  Virtually all of Africa was under European rule by 1900.

Struggle for Rights:  The British brought stability to India but destroyed native industries and degraded Indians.

Self-Determination:  Latin American countries gained their political independence but became economically dependent on Western powers.

Who were the Native Americans?

How did contact among the cultures of three continents change the society of each culture?

How did new ideas and the religious fervor brought to the New World by European immigration affect the lives of women and enslaved Africans?

What led to the American Revolution and the establishment of the United States?

What are the provisions of the US Constitution for establishing a government, and what rights and responsibilities does it outline for its citizens?
