The Giant
Size Action Planet Halloween Special is a treat for any season--
and this is one comic comic that just refused to die. The genesis
of this book is an epic tale in itself: Mike Manley and the
Action
Planeteers braved hell and high-water to bring this full-color extravaganza
into the world, and they delivered a damned fine demon-baby (although Mr.
Manley described it more like "giving birth to a hippo"), a treat that
can be enjoyed in any season. Maleficent Mike (known in some neighborhoods
as "Mr. Evil") has dedicated himself to digging up the very sense of wonderment
and joy once found in the four-color world of "pop-art" that now lays buried
under the deleterious dregs and detritus of descent to the common denominator.
The Action Planeteers are re-capturing the dream that has become
enslaved to mediocrity, rescuing an art form held hostage by the mindless
minions of Madison Avenue. |
IT
LIVES...!
THE
ORIGINAL SOLICITATION.
More
plainly put, this is a comic-book you're meant to have fun with, and there's
a Monsterman Halloween mask on the back to prove it. This
isn't another one of those repetitive, self-consciously "grim and gritty,"
monotonously gray carbon copies cranked out by second-hand talent.
This is a hip funny book made by dedicated professionals having a good
time. |

More than anything,
this book hearkens back to the late sixties, and the cool cartoons of Alex
Toth-- like Space-Ghost and Frankenstein, Jr, or the
Mighty
Mi-Tor. This is a good comic in the same way
1963 is a
good comic: It's a labor of love that seeks to re-kindle the magic
of the days when mainstream comics had a heart and soul. Maybe that's
why its creators were willing to plow through the problems it took to produce
it. For certainly the Halloween Special, late as it is, is
the book that wouldn't die. |
