This is a proposal for a
new comic-book series based on the Saturday morning super-hero cartoons
produced by Hanna-Barbera in the 1960's. Most of the characters were
designed by Alex Toth, and he gave them a simple, classic look.
The goal of this proposal
is to create a comic that captures the classic look of the cartoons while
giving the stories a more all-ages spin--maintining the appeal to kids
with the colorful costumes, action, and super-villains, but adding more
sophistication to the plot-lines and deepening the characterizations for
older readers. This approach is especially for those who remember
the programs from their youth and would read new stories if they were interesting
to them.
This proposal brings all
the various cartoons together into one wild universe, set in an unspecified
future when mankind has mastered travel between the stars and has begun
to colonize other worlds.
I envision the comic as one
giant-sized monthly magazine made up of short, individual features that
add up to one complete and satisfying story.
I also want to create the
cartoon universe these characters inhabit big enough and flexible enough
to permit Frankenstein Jr. and Atom Ant to share space with Space Ghost
and Birdman. The Baron/Rude series NEXUS showed how such cartoon
elements could work together with more dramatic aspects to acheive an excellent
effect.
To illustrate this proposal,
I searched the internet for as many good pictures of the characters as
I could find that were large enough to properly capture all of the detail
in the character's depiction. In some cases, I was actually able
to find some of the original model sheets created by Alex Toth for Hanna-Barbera
in the sixties. A full set of these model sheets for all the characters
I'd like to use would be wonderful. Unfortunately, while the images
appear large on the page, they are actually quite small. So, while
you can print these images out, the quality of the printed image will not
be high-- or the image may print out in high quality but be very small.
Still I hope that these pages give an idea of how visually attractive and
diverse these characters are. |
